Samsung to begin rolling out Gingerbread to Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab this month

mobile

Samsung on Monday announced that it will finally begin rolling out Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) to its popular Galaxy S and Galaxy Tab devices. Samsung had started to roll out Gingerbread last month, but was forced to halt the update due to a bug identified shortly after it was released. Samsung has apparently addressed the issue, and the update will release the update once again this month beginning in the UK and other European countries. The Android update, which will require users to connect their devices to Samsung’s desktop software, will then roll out to North America and other regions at an unspecified time. Hit the break for the press release.

Samsung Offers Android 2.3 ‘Gingerbread’ Upgrade for GALAXY S and GALAXY Tab

SEOUL–(Korea Newswire) May 16, 2011 — Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a global leader in Androidâ„¢ mobile devices, today announced the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upgrade to the Samsung GALAXY S, GALAXY Tab, and GALAXY Ace/Gio/Fit/mini, giving users enhanced performance and an improved user interface.

The GALAXY S and GALAXY Tab are Samsung’s intelligently designed smart devices with 1 GHz application processors, giving users an intuitive, immersive and integrated mobile experience.

The upgrade from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3 offers an even greater user experience, with features including:

  • Faster Performance – Multimedia content now has a lower CPU consumption rate, while support for more powerful 3D Graphics enables an enhanced mobile gaming experience.
  • Upgraded Usability – The user interface has been improved, enabling faster access and control and a more intuitive user experience. Users will also benefit from improved copy-and-paste functionality.

The Android 2.3 upgrade will start with GALAXY S in the UK and Nordic countries from mid-May, and gradually rolled out to other European markets, North America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, Africa and rest of the world according to the regional plan.

The upgrade will be available via Kies, Samsung’s device management software. Kies can be downloaded from Samsung’s corporate website (http://www.samsung.com).

Gingerbread?  They never even finished rolling out FroYo.  Samsung updates are practically non-existant.

I thought an update on a Samsung phone was for you to buy a new device.  I mean, can’t everyone just buy a new samsung when they want an upgrade??  They release a new phone practically every two weeks.

No wait, that won’t work, they release most of them with touchwiz and 2.2 with the promise of an upgrade.

      Hmmmm, nevermind.

He’s an a-hold for stating the truth? Seriously, for shame on Samsung and all the other OEMs that release new hardware with old OSs.

Wow, seriously misplaced anger.  You should really point that at Samsung.  Sorry you bought a Samsung phone with an outdated os that will never be updated.  Seriously, switch to decaf and make better choices buying phones.

It’s too late? This product is almost End Of Life… we need these at LAUNCH… some problems of battery life and performance are too little, too late.

What about the Charge? It’s basically the same thing with the exception of LTE.

I’m so grateful for XDA!  Droid Rulez!

I am so disappointed……every now and then people are getting excited by the rumors that and update is coming…..and then “pull backs”…..and then again “mid/end of some month” news flashing around…..c’on! I paid a hefty amount of money to buy this hardware…….why do I have to beg for an OS which just works fine?? Sorry Samsung, you suck big time, you lost faith of many people.
