Barnes & Noble making ‘special announcement’ during May 24th press event

mobile

We just received an invite from Barnes & Noble for a press event that’s being held in New York City on Tuesday, May 24th. We suspect this will be the bookstore’s third major eReader announcement, which is in line with a recent SEC filing that suggested such a launch was imminent. It’s unclear what features the new eReader will offer, although we suspect it could be powered by the Android Honeycomb operating system, which was specifically designed for use in tablets. We’ll be reporting live from the event on Tuesday morning.

Why would they announce that at a Barnes & Noble event?

        Answer: The Wouldn’t!

… but what they’ll probably announce it a new NOOK (eInk) version.

Because amazon is getting ready to announce a nook tablet?

Think this is why Samsung cancelled its  May 24th announcement?  They didn’t want to share the spotlight with B&N?  My conspiracy theory, at least…

    >> we suspect it could be powered by the Android Honeycomb operating system…

I’ve read that it’s likely a touch-based e-ink reader with NO secondary LCD. So the version of the OS isn’t really that important.

i’ve read that it’s going to be a cheaper Nook to compete with the cheaper Kindle.

there will no way be another Honeycomb tablet, because B&N can’t skin Honeycomb with their custom UI for another Nook Color. And B&N just released the nook color a few months ago, there wont be another one so soon.

My guess is that it’s a new eInk device.  The original Nook is desperately in need of a refresh.
