AT&T to developers: third-party application sources allowed henceforth

Software

One of the major benefits of owning an Android handset is the ability to install applications from non-Market sources — without the necessity of a dev-team intervention. AT&T customers have not, however, been privy to this particular feature… that is until now. In a letter to developers, the carrier has confirmed that it will, from this point forward, allow users to install Android apps from third-party sources such as the Amazon App Store. The act of installing applications through unofficial channels — oft referred to as side-loading — has been disabled by AT&T since the introduction of its first Android handset. The carrier’s newest Android offering, the Samsung Infuse 4G, was the first device to ship with the side-loading handcuffs removed and, thankfully, it looks like it won’t be the last.

It’s Moto, you should expect a locked experience for being dumb enough to buy from them.

It is my understanding that they push the update (it is an update) to a few (several? tens?) thousand devices per day during a rather small time window each day.  I assume a restart is required, so you’ll know when it happens.

I wonder what Amazon had to threaten them with…

I’m not falling for their games. I think we all know why the change of heart.

I see AT&T locking it down again after their merger gets approved.

“the carrier (A Fee&FEE) has confirmed that it will, from this point forward,  allow users to install Android apps from third-party sources”…..
Let me just run that through the bs translator:

The Death Star is swallowing up t-mobile whole.  They have real android phones that people have actually been allowed to use, and if we continue to block this they will run away to other carriers defeating the purpose of actually buying the company.  I guess we begrudgingly had better let them load apps from other places.

I was thinking the same thing. I would also look out for more spontaneous concessions by AT&T in the coming months, if the deal moves forward.
