Amazon prepping dual-core ‘Coyote’ and quad-core ‘Hollywood’ tablets for 2011

Exclusive

We received word from a tipster that Amazon, practically confirmed to be entering the tablet market in the near future, isn’t planning just one device, but is planning on releasing at least two before the end of the year. Information is light, but we have been told that the “entry” level tablet, codenamed “Coyote” will be based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform. The big boy? That’s codenamed “Hollywood” and will be based on the NVIDIA T30 “Kal-El” which will bring a screaming quad-core processor with a 500% performance increase over the dual-core Tegra 2. No word on screen sizes at this point, and we’re digging for more information, so stay tuned!

This is stupid.  It’s like these companies are comparing the sizes of their penis.  They’re putting these specs in these devices just because.  WTF is Honeycomb going to do with a quad-core processor?

    • ApplesNAndroids

Who said anything about them running android?

      • Anonymous

I’ll bite.  Windows 7 tablet from Amazon?

      • Scrantoncity

Nah, I’ve vowed to wait until Windows 8 before I make any Windows purchases… Besides replacing my  broken one (lol)

But yes, I’d buy anything from Amazon. They’re my favorite retailer.

It’s a fail without DROID OS. Sorry.

      • Anonymous

That comment is fail.  Give Win8 a chance before calling it FAIL.  Supposed to be heavy tablet customization, ARM support, tablet specific UI and will may just pwn Android.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

         Norm you are a fail

      • Cer

Liking your comments because people still don’t get that you’re a troll. Love it!

Droid Os….seriously hope ur kidding. Wait…wtf. Even if its a joke, it makes no sense. Congratz sir, you’ve failed on every level except spelling.

Win8 for ARM won’t be ready in 2011. Of course Amazon is doing android tablets… it’s more about selling content than it is about selling the hardware. No doubt it’ll come with Amazon MP3, Amazon AppStore, Kindle App, etc pre-installed.

      • Anonymous

Wasnt the post on this site a few days ago about Amazon coming out with Honeycomb tablets?

      • ApplesNAndroids

It’s very possible. I didn’t mean to disrespect your opinion on this so my apologies if I had. I was under the impression that Amazon could be creating their own specific OS for tablets and handhelds. Although, I also remember talk of using android. We shall see!

      • Anonymous

I’m guessing that since they’ve already launched an Android “Appstore” they’re probably not going to follow that with W7 tablets. but I could be wrong.

      • UndeadNexus

It says Android 3.1 as one of the tags at the bottom.

    • http://about.me/brandonmccall brandonmccall

Literally laughed out loud at that one.

Your comment is like people 10 years ago asking “why on earth do you need 10Mbps Internet to your phone?!?”

If you can’t see future uses, it doesn’t mean you need to discredit them outright.

      • Anonymous

That is a poor comparison, there is always a benefit for stronger Internet connections. However more cores for Android (let’s face it that is the only viable option for Amazon) is pointless considering how low-level the applications are for the platform.

      • http://www.facebook.com/blindsk02 Ryan Belmont

true, while you will not see real performance gain from more cores as of yet, it will positivly affect you in terms of battery life. Lets say a 1ghz single core CPU uses 80% of its power to run an application, it draws quite a bit of power to maintain that speed, now a quad core would use its 4 cores together (20% of each) effectively lowering the power consumption in total making your same sized battery last longer….

is the extra money for a quad core worth it to me personally, even taking the battery life increase into consideration? No…..but thats just me, some people will say yes for battery and yes for the longevity of its lifespan.

Where you been dude. In fandroid land the faster and bigger your tablet is the bigger your penis. Get with the program

BOOM! BGR bringing the heat today. This is the BGR I know and love.

I don’t quite understand why Amazon finds it necessary to throw their hat in the ring, but hey, is too many tablets a bad thing?

    • Anonymous

Yep, definitely the BGR I’ve come to know and love!

Wait, you *did* mean the BGR that posts any sensational headline from any source with no regard to the veracity of it? The BGR that only refers to past articles when they happen to guess one right? (Fling enough crap, some of it will stick…)  Because that’s the BGR that I’m thinking of right now…

    • Cer

“I don’t quite understand why Amazon finds it necessary to throw their hat in the ring”

Hi, I’m $$$$$$$$$$$$$$, have we met?

There is no software for tablets that could take advantage of quad-core. Seems like it’ll be DOA cause you be spending so much for power that you’ll never use!

    • Anonymous

Honeycomb does have support for multicore processors though, no? I’d wait to pass judgment on cost until we, well, actually see the cost. ARM chips are usually pretty cost efficient, for all we know quad core will be the same price as dual core is today.

As for other software, well it makes more sense to future proof a tablet with higher hardware for higher software vs making higher software that’ll never be used because it doesn’t have hardware to run on, doesn’t it?

    • http://twitter.com/cordial david carter

Actually QNX could but it ain’t gonna use that surely.

     Talk about an unfocused approach.

    Meh.

Here’s hoping that Amazon can produce a compelling Android tablet. I’d like to see it. No other manufacturer has managed to produce a tablet that can realistically compete with the iPad. Since eBook reading is such an important tablet use-case, Amazon probably believes they can sell a lot of eBooks by pushing a really compelling tablet.

  • Anonymous

I am waiting definitely now on ipad 2! Amazon I would trust to do a great job with a tablet and not abandon them as with other android tablets.  I am very impressed with the work they did on the kindle

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

I’m excited to see what Amazon brings to the table. It’ll be good for the competition no matter how you slice the pie. But i will agree QuadCore seems a little much. They’ll most likely throw 2.3 on it and scream “LOOK AT THE BENCHMARKS IT FLIES” , or they will dub it as a “tablet with e-reader functions”…. we shall see.

  • MichiganKing

A party ain’t a party until QUAD CORE WALKS IN IT. All the other tablets and phones better bow down

You gotta love the android haters…lol. time to embrace it… resistance is futile…

I’m all for naming chips after comic book heroes. After the Tegra “Kal-El”, will Apple employ the A6 “Doomsday”?

  • Cer

Imagine if Amazon put vanilla android on its devices (and only added in Amazon apps as the unavoidable bloatware). We’d have another Nexus line, and I’d love Amazon long time.

Chances these phones and tablets will be ad-supported?

So not only is there going to be another dual core Android tablet that won’t sell well, they are planning a quad core tablet to show anemic sales as well?

Stupid is as stupid does I suppose.

    • Anonymous

What are Android tablets that are not selling well?  Just curious… because the Samsung 7 inch tablet sold well and the Motoloa Xoom sold well.  Nook sold well.

      • Anonymous

        ????
        ???????
The Xoom sold well? Last time I checked it wasn’t selling well

      • Steel

Umm…  that’s because the moron manufacturers debuted Android tablets w/ req’d carrier contracts.  Now that we’re beginning to see tablets come out that are purely wifi and affordable, (ahem, Transformer, if you can find one) that will all change.

      • Anonymous

Xoom sold more than 100,000 units thus far. That was on plan.

      • Dick long

Leave to an ipad owner to complain about too much power. This thing is gonna be 5x fasterthan an ipad2 and will be $50 cheaper than the least expensive ipad2 it’s a win win situation. The tablet market is about to be flooded with cheap powerfull Android and Windows tablets that will dominate the market. Apple will not dominate the tablet market very long.

  • Killianohara

More to the point, what the hell is going to happen with digital magazines and other similar content. Without a unified digital news stand publishers will and are suffering an unimaginable nightmare keeping up with new tablet devices and the bickering between manufacturers in how they want conent released. More devices means more problems unless this is figured out.

    • http://profiles.google.com/brotherkane Brian Kane

Not necessarily.  Google, Microsoft, and Apple are all betting on HTML5 + Java Script.  That makes it much easier to create apps that can be ported to each mobile OS.  Plus with screen sizes standardizing on smart phone, superphone, 7″ tablet, and 10″ tablet – there is minimal fragmentation (as you really only need to nail smart phone and 10″ tablet).

  • Steel

Build it, Amazon.  I will be on the order list.

  • Anonymous

The 500% performance improvement claims and all others before it are stupid it’s always based off of some stupid performance measure that doesn’t hold up in the real world.  I bet it won’t let me do anything important like load a webpage 5x faster.  Also Tegra 2 is underwhelming so besting it shouldn’t be hard.

    • http://profiles.google.com/brotherkane Brian Kane

Yeah – rememeber the Ipad 1 only has 256MB of ram.  Obvious memory is different than processors, but I have found the iPad much faster than many tablets 100+% more ‘powerful.’

I think this probably only matters for hardcore gaming and possible productivity apps typically only on desktops and notebooks now.

  • sktrbrnz

All the Windows 8 comments are a bit silly.  The article says Amazon intends to ship these “before the end of the year” (assuming 2011), and Microsoft has repeatedly insisted Windows 8 won’t ship until at least Q3/2012 at the earliest.  Why would Amazon wait that much longer?
