Xperia PLAY game sales have been unimpressive

mobile

According to a report by CVG, Android Market downloads of games specifically designed to run on Sony Ericsson’s Xperia PLAY handset have been extremely low. As evidence in its case, the report hones in on five Play titles that all have under 1,000 total Market downloads: Cool Boarders 2, 100–500; Destruction Derby, 500–1,000; Jumping Flash, 50–100; MediEvil, 100–500; and Syphon Filter, 100–500. Despite this, the handset’s creator is undeterred. “There’s no concerns, it’s a revolutionary device, it’s shaking up the market, we’re very pleased with it,” said Dominic Heil-Dwyer, head of market development at Sony Ericsson. “In terms of getting the PlayStation Certified program out, generally, we’re very happy. I think we’ll make a full assessment of if it has achieved our expectations fully, further down the line, so we’re very happy.” Launched in early April, the device pairs classic gaming controls with the now familiar large-touchscreen smartphone form factor. The Xperia PLAY is scheduled to make its Stateside debut on Verizon Wireless in the coming months.

Sounds just like Baghdad Bob: “revolutionary device, it’s shaking up the market, the Americans are retreating.”

ofcourse game sales have been bad …….all the games are old ports from iphone!!!!! Release some NEW GAMES and then maybe sales will pick up.

They should have focused on making the phone worth wanting. Taking an “average” phone and throwing a gamepad on it doesn’t sell units.

Clock it at 1.5 or make it dual core and it will definitely sell. Oh, they could try making games for it too; that might help.

This actually IS one of those instances where it is too little too late. There’s nothing to back it up beyond the unique controller. Sony/[Ericsson] can’t win for losing these days.

With all their privacy blunders of late, is it a surprise that no one really wants Sony intertwined with their smartphone OS? That, combined with the fact they’ve never really had a hit in the smartphone market, makes this a Saturday slow-news-day fluff piece ;)

If Sony was hoping for more, I have no idea what their targets were. You can’t sell fifteen-year-old games to a modern audience and expect to make a bundle.

If this was any other company, I’d give them the benefit of the doubt. But since this is Sony, and they truly are retarded, I’ll assume that they actually DID think that they were going to make a bundle.

to be honest, this is what i noticed as a timeline of the life of this platform.
its rumored. more details on rumor. its official. its coming. its looking good. almost here. almost here. should be here very soon. its not selling well.

no commercials for it. no online ads for it. no big fuss about it being released. I feel i keep up to date with tech alot more than the average person (maybe not as much as some of you guys of course) but i didnt even know it was actually out. the average person still probably hasnt even heard of it.

That’s because it’s only out in Europe right now.

We’ve had it in Canada for almost a month now. Lots of people play with our display model, but the demographic that likes the phone couldn’t possibly afford it, nor do they have the credit history required to qualify for a 3 year term to buy it at the reduced price either.

None of this surprises me.. they should have allow some phones to play certain games, using a virtual style on screen control. Instead , they restricted it to the Experia.  it to the Experia.

android users can install one of those ps1 emulators,  download a bunch of roms, and then enjoy a lot of these older ps1 games for free.

the same can be said for all the other game emulators on android market.

    1. It’s only available on Verizon.
    2. Isn’t it the only PS certified unit on the market? The Incredible 2 has the specs but no official word.
    3. These are OLD games.
    4. Add PS3 integration and you might have more customers.

Edit: I dont remember if it does have ps3 capabilities but even if it did I doubt it’s as good as it should be.

Not only was this phone too late to market but it doesn’t make sense for a lot of people already stuck in 2 year contracts. This phone does have a niche market unfortunately it’s mainly Playstation freaks and kids who really want one over a iPhone or other android phone. Either way game sales shouldn’t be expected to break any records.

This would have been cool… Five years ago.
