Samsung announces 10.1-inch LCD for tablets with mind-numbing resolution

Tablets

Samsung and its partner Nouvoyance have announced a new, 10.1-inch WQXGA display specifically designed for use in tablets. The panel utilizes Noyvoyance’s PenTile technology to “improve the brightness, resolution, contrast, and power consumption,” and packs a mind-numbing 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution. To put some perspective on that: the 27-inch LCD screen I’m currently using has a maximum display resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The display also boasts a pixel density of 300 dpi while using two-thirds fewer sub-pixels. “Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs,” said Samsung’s Senior VP of Electronics, Dr. Sungtae Shin. “There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display.” Samsung expects the panel to be commercially available later this year. The full press release is after the break.

Samsung Electronics and Nouvoyance Demonstrate 10.1-inch, 300dpi WQXGA PenTile RGBW Prototype Display for Tablet Market

PenTile RGBW is the only display to optimize balance between power efficiency and high performance viewing in tablets

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–At the SID Display Week 2011 International Symposium (LA Convention Center, Booth 707) May 17-19, Samsung Electronics is demonstrating the industry’s first 10.1-inch WQXGA (2560 x 1600) format PenTile™ RGBW tablet display, an ultra-high resolution, liquid crystal display (LCD). The prototype demonstration marks the first time this resolution has been available for the tablet market in the popular – 10.1-inch – format, rivaling the highest resolution smartphone displays now on the market. Samsung expects to have commercial availability of this technology for tablet applications later this year.

Because tablets are regularly used for viewing rich-colored images, the 10.1-inch 300 dpi display is ideal for applications that require extraordinary image and text clarity such as browsing the web and viewing high-definition movies, or reading books and spreadsheets.

“In order to develop tablets with the form and function that consumers demand, a design engineer ultimately has to determine how to get the highest resolution display possible, while still fitting within the overall power budget for their design,” said Joel Pollack, executive vice president of Nouvoyance, Samsung’s affiliate company that developed the PenTile RGBW technology.

Lightness and power efficiency of the display are critical factors since higher resolution displays typically draw more power.

“Samsung’s PenTile display technology is the only display technology that operates at 40 percent less power yet provides twice that of Full HD-viewing performance for consumers compared to legacy RGB stripe LCDs. There is no other commercial display technology on the market today that offers this high of a resolution and pixel density in a 10.1-inch size display,” said Dr. Sungtae Shin, Senior VP of Samsung Electronics.

PenTile RGBW WQXGA Technology Highlights

  • This 10.1-inch tablet panel is capable of 300 cd/m2 of luminance, yet uses 40 percent less power than that used by legacy RGB stripe LCDs in power-saving modes.
  • An outdoor brightness mode of as much as 600 cd/m2 luminance enables viewing in bright ambient lighting.
  • The display’s color gamut is 72 percent., allowing greater color realism than legacy RGB stripe tablet displays that have a typical color gamut of 55 percent NTSC.
  • PenTile technology achieves 300 dpi resolution with two-thirds the number of subpixels, maintaining the VESA/ICDM display resolution standard.

Based on the current sales numbers, the odds say your “next” Android tablet will be your first.

^^^In case anyone was wondering, that’s fanboy for “I don’t have a life.”

Samsung Galaxy Tab has been out for quite some time, you know. May be you don’t know, but that doesn’t matter. Your “perspective” doesn’t matter. You don’t matter. You don’t matter.

      Blegh, Pentile.

That being said, I guess we might be seeing that retina iPad next year, assuming there’s something out that can push that many pixels.

That quad-core Nvidia chip that supposed to debut this summer may be the perfect solution.

except apple is suing samsung. heres hoping that android tablets take off and samsung doesnt need to sell panels the the nazis at apple

        • Anonymous

That won’t happen. Apple is a big client.

You know Samsung, their are ways to make good tablets and phones that dont blatantly copy Apple right?!!? Looks like they also had the blueprint for iPad 3. So i guess their 10.1 inch tablet is going “Retina” or “TouchWiz HD” perhaps? SMH. So not only are they copying current gen Apple products but also unreleased ones too? Where’s the uniqueness? The innovation?

      • Anonymous

I’m going to cry if they call it TouchWiz HD.

        to: Nhjhblejohn

You’re right that there isn’t as much innovation here on the hardware, but its using android 3.0. Samsung is just putting out hardware, and while they can innovate a little bit on hardware, I think it’s a business decision and how android is similar to licensing Windows. If they introduce new hardware features, they will need to take time and resources to make it work “right”. That will just take up time from their chance to get in on the action while people are still adopting tablets.
I love innovation. Apple and Google are duking it out on different plains. Apple’s innovations are obvious since they develop both hardware and software. Google, well is Google and they are all over the place. Search and openness has led to feature sets that make android pretty unique as well.

Samsung provides its own contributions through developing and refining tech such as displays.

Again, not disagreeing with the lack of innovation on Samsung’s part for the table overall, but I am not opposed to copying and making things better as long as there are innovations coming from else where. Off the top of my head, and correct me if I’m completely wrong for discussion, but a lot of other industries work on that philosophy, be it cars, tv’s, military tech, etc…

What the hell are you talking about?  They created a high resolution display and they’re copying Apple when Apple hasn’t even released a tablet display with that resolution?  Are you stupid?  I hate fanboys… ugh, way to start my Friday off bad.

Samsung: “We’re in the middle of teh lawsuits, Apple.  No retina display for you!”
Apple: “So sad.  I guess we’ll have to just go and burn this $10 billion we were going to pay you.”
“Samsung: “Just kidding!  Right this way, sir.  How may we serve you?”

Shuks Andrew, you make my 23″ sound so small, hence, I feel the need to go shopping today.

This is great news for those of us waiting on future [GSM] tablet releases.

Too bad it’s pentile matrix, which effectively makes the resolution lower.

I own an Epic, and know what you mean… but at that resolution on that screen size (10″), I assume, and hope that it will hardly even b noticeable.

If apple pay the right amount no doubt they will get these.

Why the HELL BGR showing iPad when Samsung Invent something

      Truelly biased

      • Tiger4j

Agreed. That’s like car and driver writing on new 2012 Chevy Tahoe but showing a picture of a Ford Focus.
Why is there a picture of iPad? That is ridiculous. At least show a Samsung tablet.
And why do people think a high-Res display is copying Apple? Did they invent the high-Res display?

Ya maybe do some research before yapping…. typical. Samsung supplies Apple and a lot of others with tablet and phone components such as ram memory, panel display’s, NAND flash memory, semiconductor’s and batteries.

        • steve jobs

according to apple cheerleaders, apple invented aluminum, shape of a rectangle, single home button, usb, touch screen, color silver, etc….so freaking stupid, get a life. apple does not create anything, it is all bought from other company and put the gay ass white apple sticker and it is made made by apple. they don’t create anything cause they don’t want to be responsible want to play safe. all the technology of apple products are invented by SAMSUNG, LG, SONY, CISCO, unknowns in China, etc….only thing apple is good at are marketing and with dumb ass apple cheerleader in every corners, they don’t have to do too much work as the apple cheerleader will buy anything apple, weather good/ bad  expensive/ cheap, just to feel like they are part of something, get a life or a girlfriend and stop jerking it.

Because there was a rumor 6 months ago that Apple was going to be the first to use a new and at that time ‘secret’ high resolution screen created by Samsung for an upcoming tablet device and that they were already testing these screens. Just because you don’t aren’t up to date on the rumor mill doesn’t mean someone else is biased. It just means you are ignorant…

battery life will be terrible with this resolution

PenTile….?! I have that display tech on my Epic, and that’s about the only thing I hate about it. With that resolution tho, idk. Can’t wait to see some in person.

    • http://www.nomoredupes.com/ Mia Anderson

Woah! This is amazing!  The resolution is just perfect.
Samsung just knows how to do things right!
I sure wish Apple don’t sue them again for patent issues. lol

Bad time for Apple to go and Piss on their samsung partnership.

      Sounds impressive!

We’ll have to wait and see if it looks impressive.

    • Eric

I am wondering if there is a CPU/GPU combination that they are going to be able to put in a tablet that is going to drive that many pixels yet still be affordable an affordable tablet and have decent battery life.

    • Anonymous

PenTile? No thanks. PenTile screens do not actually have the pixels that they claim they do. Google “PenTile screen Nexus One” to see some up-close examples. It’s a deceptive technology that looks like ass.

    • http://twitter.com/zk0sn1 T S

This is a 16:10 WIDESCREEN, not an apple tablet 4:3.     Apple wouldn’t choose a new screen unless they can make iphone apps precisely 16x blurrier.

    • DonRSD aka PSN DonVCorleone

specs wont matter, the ipad is better.

just like any ‘new’ android device is still not better than a 1 year old iphone 4 :)

    • Dave123

They need a Retina display on the 7″ galaxy tab… Update please…

    • joemomma

I find it discusting that the next panel size up to get this 16:10 2560×1600 resolution is a Dell 30″ for $1200. Where are screen sizes in between with that resolution?

    • wirecup

Good PR is the story here.  The goal had to be something similiar to, following Apples Retina success, to quadruple the resolution of a 4-inch WVGA display to 1600×960 in a 4-inch display.  This requires 467 ppi not the 300 ppi attained, but it was a good start towards that resolution.
