HTC Merge available from third-party retailers, not Verizon Wireless

mobile

A Verizon Wireless spokesperson has shed some light on the fate of the HTC Merge — an Android 2.2 handset first discovered last September. The device, which was officially announced by HTC in February, has fallen in and out of obscurity for months. Now, according to the latest report, users may finally get a chance to purchase the handset. Speaking with blog Phone Scoop, a Verizon representative explained, “The HTC Merge was approved for use on the Verizon Wireless network and is being sold by third party distributors, but not in Verizon Wireless stores.” The full-QWERTY smartphone also contains a SIM card slot — for use overseas — making it one of Verizon’s “world phones.” The company did not indicate if the handset would eventually make its way to Verizon’s retail outlets.

    That makes zero sense.

Really Verizon?? Just release the phone already.

     does anyone care

    • NunyaBizness

      Yes. Many care. I do.
I wish the Merge came out earlier. I already extended my Sprint contract for a Shift 4G.

I wish there was a button to downrank you and your worthless post.

It sounds like it won’t, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it did.

That’s a shame than you might get a plain stock nonDroid branded phone on Verizon. How the hell can people hear “Drooooid” from a phone now every time it rings? Where’s that preinstalled V-cast? Oh well, Sprint will never let me down. Always shutting off that NASCAR app I accidentally turn on is always comforting : )

It’s a Bing phone… it could have 2 copies of all of Verizon’s BS and it still wouldn’t be as bad as having Bing.

     Good luck on updates!

What’s the real story behind that ?! Why is Vzn treating it like an unwanted stepchild ?!

LOL I guess I didn’t think about it like that… But yep pretty much.

The device was binges at Verizon’s request and google fought them on it dellaying the device. Finally HTC got tired and sold the phone to other carriers unbinged. This is the compromise to get it released

  • Juicerooster

well…. when and where can i get this phone?  does it still work on verizon?  ive been waiting a while now for a good htc/android/keyboard phone

Verizon seems to be doing this more often — there was the Devour (at least initially) and then the Samsung U370 (a variant of the Reality). Not sure what the benefits all are, although it does lessen competition between corporate store and typically lower priced third party vendors like Costco, Best Buy, etc. If the Bing story is accurate, I wonder how HTC can move fwd like this on their own.

hmmm-Bing would be tooo damn bad imo.  I would be willing to buy and activate myself if it didn’t have Bing.
