Apple’s iPad isn’t hurting PC sales, NPD finds

Computers

Market research firm NPD Group this week revealed the findings of its recent report entitled, Apple iPad Owner Study II. Among the interesting findings contained within NPD’s research is the revelation that the iPad isn’t responsible for the current decline in the traditional consumer PC market — at least, not according to NPD and its respondents. Research firm IDC estimates that the PC market dipped by over 10% in the U.S. last quarter, and 3.2% globally. In reporting its estimates, IDC said that these declines were due to factors other than the rising popularity of the iPad and other “media tablets.” NPD Group’s new report jibes with that sentiment, as the firm claims that only 14% of early iPad adopters decided against purchasing a traditional PC as a result of their tablet purchases. “The explosion of computer sales when Windows 7 launched, as well as the huge increase in netbook sales at that time, are much more to blame for weak consumer PC sales growth than the iPad,” said Stephen Baker, VP of industry analysis at NPD, in a statement. “Overall it appears that the vast majority of iPad purchases to-date have been incremental to the consumer technology industry.” Hit the jump for the full press release.

NPD: Consumer PC Market May Be Weak But It Isn’t Because of the iPad

PORT WASHINGTON, NEW YORK, MAY 10 2011 – The consumer PC market isn’t floundering because of the iPad, in fact, the rate of cannibalization is actually declining among more recent purchasers, according to leading market research company The NPD Group’s Apple iPad Owner Study II report.

According to the report only 14 percent of early iPad adopters (iPad owners of six months or more) abandoned a PC purchase for an iPad, and that dropped to just 12 percent of iPad owners who purchased over the past holiday season. In fact, cannibalization of netbooks is actually down by 50 percent among more recent iPad buyers, when compared to early adopter buyers.

“The explosion of computer sales when Windows 7 launched, as well as the huge increase in netbook sales at that time, are much more to blame for weak consumer PC sales growth than the iPad,” said Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis at NPD. “Overall it appears that the vast majority of iPad purchases to-date have been incremental to the consumer technology industry.”

According to NPD’s Retail Tracking Service, the under $500 segment of the Windows consumer notebook market grew by 21 percent for the 6 months ending March 2011 to become the largest segment of the consumer notebook market.

“The conventional wisdom that says tablet sales are eating into low- priced notebooks is most assuredly incorrect,” continued Baker. “The over $500 Windows consumer notebooks market is where PC sales have been impacted the most, with a 25 percent decline from October 2010 to March 2011.”

It’s more than likely that iPad sales added billions of dollars to the industry’s coffers after years of ASP declines draining the market. According to the report, nearly 75 percent of consumers who bought an iPad for themselves said they had no intentions of buying anything else, making all of those iPad purchases incremental sales volume.

That additional volume has spurred the development of new accessories opportunities that also serve to direct more money into the retail market. Approximately 83 percent of iPad owners have purchased an accessory for their iPad, with cases being the most popular. The sales opportunities are being spread across all manufacturers and retailers, not just Apple. Approximately 50 percent of all cases are non-Apple branded, and according to the report about 50 percent of cases and more than 60 percent of screen protectors were purchased at a different store than where the consumer purchased their iPad.

While consumers looked far and away to find the right product to accessorize their iPad, the expansion of distribution in the fourth quarter for the device itself had little impact on sales shares. Best Buy and Apple sold 3/4 of all devices during the holiday period. Comparatively speaking the carrier stores had much weaker results, accounting for just 3 percent of sales. Clearly, consumers’ indifference to 3G connectivity was a driving factor as sales for the basic $499 WiFi only iPad increased by almost 33 percent during the holiday period to nearly one-in-three sales.

“Consumers just do not see the utility in 3G connectivity,” said Baker. “There’s an added expense for the device and for the service, something a majority of iPad owners aren’t willing to pay. Since most iPads rarely venture away from home the value of a 3G connection is likely to diminish, especially as other tablets enter the market and pricing starts to fall. When every penny counts, features that aren’t core to the user becoming increasingly marginalized as manufacturers fight for every sale.”

Methodology
The survey, completed in March, was fielded to an online U.S. representative sample of adults (18+) to measure trends from NPD Group’s Apple iPad: Consumers’ Perceptions and Attitudes Report (March 2010), and Apple iPad Owners Study (August 2010). Additionally, a pre-identified sample of Apple iPad owners from NPD’s Proprietary Online Registered Panel was augmented.

They can be activated for you at the store.

    • Anonymous

No you don’t and never did they activate them in store. You people find anything to bash success yet you never have anything legit to say.

Saw am article a few weeks back that stated just the opposite. The iphad is hurting pc sales. Retards strike again.

    • Senor Chang

Yes analysts are retarded. you know whats more retarded? Making a comment about something that was addressed in the blog showing that you obviously didn’t read more than the headline.

      • Anonymous

I guess that makes you super-retarded. Well done.

This is bull, I trust a former Apple executive’s misinformed opinion over a study that performed actual research any day.

well your in trouble if you believe what the guy selling you stupid shit is telling you, and there dumb if they think something with no upgradable memory, less power, and just not upgradable at all as with any tablet is gonna dominate pc ever, it just will never happen not just with ipad im not a fanboy i hate tablets in general ill take my alienware m11x with me anywhere b4 ill get a tablet, its just better!!!

well duh, people need PCs to actually do stuff on lol.

Every time I see a stupid analyst post that the tablet will replace the PC makes me laugh. You need POWER, a tablet doesn’t provide you any of this. It’s like giving a carpenter a hand saw, when they really could use a reciprocal saw to get their work done in an efficient and timely manner.

The games on a tablet are as good as I remember them 8-10 years ago. You can’t use a word processor efficiently, and forget spreadsheets, would hate to try designing anything from a tablet whether it be video editing, music editing or photo editing. It’s great for some quick basic effects.

Analysts spend a LOT of time presenting in the business world. A tablet is great for this, though it does prove their lack of knowledge and understanding of a PC in the first place. The rest of the world that does actual work on computers laughs at these idiots.

      Sent from my PC!

Even if the tooth count on that handsaw is higher than anyone else’s and the handle is finally available in white? Plus, I hear they’re lengthening the blade by 0.5 inches next time around. Your current handsaw is now OBSOLETE. (BTW, if you hold the saw the wrong way, it will occasionally jump out of the cut from time to time.) Still, OMG. BEST…SAW…EVER!

Since most iPads rarely venture away from home the value of a 3G connection is likely to diminish”

Apparently this guy hasn’t been to an airport recently. I see dozens of iPads all the time while travelling.

As I recall, the 3G iPad 1 sold well (50%+). Perhaps the tethering feature available on the iPhone now has dented the 3G sales?

  • Homer

Well an iPad is by no means a worthy replacement of a computer… it lacks storage, speed, usb etc… The iPad is essentially nothing more than an over sized ipod touch, it’s a toy more than anything.

    • Biggles

“The iPad is essentially nothing more than an over sized ipod touch, it’s a toy more than anything.”

DING, DING, DING. We have a winner!!

  • Don

If you want to do anything more than email and surf the net you still need a PC. A smart tablet manufacturer will figure that out and bridge the gap.

  • Anonymous

Who ever thought this was a MORON.

  • jk

In the picture what ipad stand is that? Who makes it and where can I buy it?

  • Anonymous

the only thing a pos ipad would replace is a ipod touch thats it who in the hell thought it would replace the pc, unless you travel a lot tablets are overpriced for what you get anyway, buy a netbook for cheaper and get more out of it and if all you do is want to read a cheap kindle or nook will suffice just think about it. ive also seen doctors get good use of ipads which is ok and the apple geeks selling ipads and setting up appointments other than that no use

People are NOT “indifferent” to 3G, they simply aren’t not going to be chained to and raped monthly by the incumbent providers of those services. If Apple were to insist that the iPad (and iPhone) be allowed to float free, within a highly competitive, month-to-month, pay-as-you-go 3G data plan environment, demand for those machines would skyrocket. (Of course, to a significant degree, the larger problem is that there is no longer a highly competitive environment for anything in America, which has under rapidly, under Clinton, Bush and Obama, become a cartel-ized nation, replete with a neo-mercantilist mentality from the unions and neo-feudalist thuggary from the government/upper classes.)

People are not stupid. If you are only just making ends meet, at risk of becoming a single income family, and seeing your purchasing power eroded by incompetence and greed of the Banksters at the Fed, the last thing an intelligent person does is to sign a two year contract for costly discretionary services.
