Android 3.1 (Honeycomb) update coming to Motorola XOOM ‘within the next several weeks’

Software

Motorola on Wednesday announced that the Android 3.1 Honeycomb update revealed by Google on Tuesday at its Google I/O 2011 conference will become available on the Motorola XOOM “within the next several weeks.” Google announced that the Verizon Wireless’ XOOM would be the first device to get the update, but there was some confusion surrounding when the new Honeycomb build might become available to devices. Motorola has now clarified that Android 3.1 will become available in the next few weeks and it will be delivered as an over the air (OTA) update. Forthcoming key additions in Android 3.1, as highlighted by Motorola, include support for the new Android movie rental service, full support for Adobe Flash Player 10.2, resizable home screen widgets, USB-connected peripheral support, expanded Bluetooth accessory support and simplified photo sharing between the XOOM and PCs. Hit the break for the full press release.

The software update, coming first to Motorola XOOM and rolling out this week, delivers a wide range of new features and expanded functionality, including:

  • Support for the new Android Market movie rentals service with thousands of titles available for immediate viewing on the Motorola XOOM’s high-resolution display or on a larger screen via HDMI
  • Full support for the final release of Adobe® Flash® Player 10.2, delivering significant performance enhancements when viewing rich Flash content on the web
  • Resizable widgets to enable further customization of home screens
  • Support for USB-connected peripherals and accessories, such as keyboards, mice, game controllers and digital cameras
  • Expanded Bluetooth features to support Bluetooth headsets in Google Talkâ„¢ video chats and Bluetooth mouse support in addition to additional shortcut keys with the Bluetooth keyboard

Huh… interesting… 3 Co workers just bought one, guy on the plane next to me had one… they must be the only ones buying…

Motorola “shipped” 250K last quarter and sold much less, so yes, your coworkers (who are likely as dense as you seem to be) are the only ones buying. Let’s move on.

        or

did JobCorp require you to post that?

Ok and I haven’t see 1 person with one. What did either of us prove there? Nothing.

And i’ve seen one person with an iPad. And i’ve seen one blackberry here recently. That doesn’t prove a thing.

And how many iPads did you notice in the airport or in the other seats of the plane. We’ll wait if you need to count awhile. Don’t forget to carry the 1′s.

You never have anything intelligent to say.. You’re wasting BGR’s bandwidth, you monkey.

      • Bringit

Just stating facts. Don’t be so sensitive. But thanks for showing us what an intelligent post looks like, that was impressive.

      • AntiFanboy

        No, you’re impressive!

Too bad they do not update their phones this quickly, otherwise I would own an Atrix.

  • keymaker

What about the free 4G upgrade. I know they said 90 days but Moto can’t be trusted for shit.

If you want something with 4G you have no righ to be mad when you bought something that did not have it to begin with and had no gauranteed date of getting it.

This article is wrong, the 3G versions are getting the update now. Wifi models will be getting it in the next few weeks along with other Honeycomb tablets.

      Thank you

  • Scott

The update is already being pushed out, which can be confirmed via their facebook page. Always a step behind BGR. Stay classy!

I have a wifi xoom and just did a factory reset. It showed the update and downloaded and installed. Working great!

    • Jmaier3

Do you have to do a factory reset to upgrade?

  • Anonymous

Wow this is fantastic news for the 1000 people that bought and kept one.

FYI, just got the update on the wifi-only. As for you trolls bashing the XOOM for market penetration, get a grip. Imagine a world with only once choice. Competition drives innovation.

    • Downsouth821

Got my update yesterday also for my wiifi Xoom. This is the reason I got the xoom and not the Galaxy Tab or Asus. The others will be slow with updates.
