Google intros Google Movies for Android smartphones and tablets

Breaking

Google just took the wraps off of its new movie rental service for Android devices. Movies rentals will start at $1.99 and users can download their favorite films directly from Android Market. There’s a 30-day rental period and you’ll have 24 hours to complete watching your movie once you’ve started playing it. Google will release separate movie applications for phones and for tablets, and both apps allow users to stream live from the cloud to a device. Movies can also be stored locally for offline playback. There are “thousands” of movies available at http://market.Android.com for those with the XOOM and today’s Android 3.1 update. The service will be available on Android 2.2 devices in a couple of weeks.

I wouldn’t mind doing this if I were to take a flight somewhere. It would be VERY cheep to do it. A lot cheaper then if I were to use iTunes. This could be cool.

That’s about the only use case where I can see myself being remotely interested. Otherwise, I’ll just watch Netflix on my laptop.

        or on my ipad etc…..

I think the one advantage this will have over NF is the ability to DL and store the file locally. Since ti’s on demand, i’d likely use NF for regular stuff, but this when NF didn’t have the title or if i wanted to have a movie to watch on the go.

    Netflix please…

Screw Netflix. Just cancelled my scrip. I hope that Amazon VOD and my premium membership. $80 per year become more useable on my portables. I have just about the same movies as Netflix for streaming and they are free. Plus I get free shipping on my purchases. And if I want I can watch new movies for a price. Netflix is getting kinda tired and its their own fault that they havent brought an app to android, not Googles. Netfix just posted an add for a senior android developer. And the 24 hours thing is to make the entertainment execs feel better.

Well it’s more the copyright restrictions than either NF or Google that’s the issue. Blame the studios who are insisting on a certain level of DRM.

Yeah, who cares? Just make netflix work.

A lot of people care, actually. I personaly don’t but, thats one thing joe consumer needs, a easy, legal way to watch movies, like iTunes on thier device.

But yeah, its in google’s best interest to give netflix all the help they can to get the damn app out ASAP, and not just for phones with embeded DRM.

Im not exactly Joe Consumer. But this was a Gaping hole for Android and the Main reason I haven’t bought an Android Tablet. I have an iPad, and if I ever take it out the house to go on a trip the first thing I do is download/rent a couple movies.

Let’s get Netflix on these devices $9.99/month – unlimited rentals .. I like this better

I more often then not find phrases like “thousands of movies available” = either nothing I haven’t seen before or anything I’d want to watch.

    Because why not!

Notice “… will start at $1.99″, so if it’s HD it’ll be $3 or $4 on what, a 4-in screen ?! With it expiring 24-hrs after beginning. The studios are most creative when finding ways to make us hate them in new and different ways.

The movies appear to be good quality off the bat. You can watch the movie on your phone, a tablet or your computer. The big difference between this and Netflix is the ability to download the movie for offline viewing.
