Microsoft to unveil ‘next major release of Windows Phone’ on May 24th

Breaking

Microsoft has just invited us to a Windows Phone event in New York City on May 24th, 2011, during which the company will “lift the curtain on the next major release of Windows Phone.” We know Mango will offer Internet Explorer 9 with an integrated Twitter experience, better multitasking, and new apps such as Angry Birds, Skype, and Spotify. We’ve also heard that Microsoft will add Bing Audio for identifying music, Bing Vision for scanning bar codes, and voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation with Bing Maps, although none of these features have been confirmed by Microsoft just yet. On May 24th, however, we’ll learn it all — and of course we’ll be on hand reporting live.

VZW is rumored to get the Trophy by the end of the week.

      • Alex3M3TI8

Yeah, but that date has moved like 10 times already. I think BGR said VZW was originally supposed to happen in Feb… My VZW business rep is mum about it still today. Don’t get me wrong, hope for a load of Mango info, confirm some speculation of feature set AND VZW. That would be awesome.

Honestly, I was thinking the whole thing is just a big to-do about VZW’s first WP7 handset and BGR is mistaking this as some kind of announcement for the OS. “Next major release of Windows Phone” isn’t exactly a detailed agenda.

??? How much more detailed can you get than that dude?…

VERY excited. I want a WP7 device badly, but I’m on Sprint, and still not sure about the Arrive…tough to give up my Evo for that. Tempting though.

    • http://twitter.com/dustbeta Dustin Schultz

Arrive is good except for not having global roaming. So, I am also stuck waiting on Sprint.

      • http://profiles.google.com/cj31016 Chris Johnson

I actually messed with the Arrive in the Sprint store and really liked the WP7 interface. I don’t necessarily hate the phone, but it’s tough to go back to a physical keyboard, and that device is pretty thick.

I have one myself since launch, and coming from webos its second only to that. I really dont have a issue with the thickness (really only a tad thicker then the iphone 4). WP7 is truly nice, and I get 17 to 22 hours of battery life a day on heavy use (crazy I know). The speeds are also sick, you would think no 4g its a issue it def is not, these WP7 phones are FAST i download full sites in under 7 secs really. So if your on sprint I highly highly recommend this over any phone sprint has or will have except the Pre3.

Hope WP7 sales will perk up. More competition – better phones for everyone!

“Now adding a new color for tiles; Orange.”

    • John

surprised they didn’t pull an apple thing. change the color of the case & call it something brand new & revolutionary

Finally! I love my Omnia 7, this update will make it more awesome…. Fingers crossed for a mango update and not just a phone for Verizon…

  • John

cute little phone os. feel sorry for those that got stuck with this

Great, what a way to kick-start summer: more tiles??

    • Anonymous

They are experts at laying tiles.

  • Anonymous

Nice, I hope they will also make NFC and front facing cameras standard. I like the HTC HD7 with T-mobile but its just missing a couple key features.

YAWN!!! Ice cream is the only thing that matters now. DROID DOES!

and just like that, WP7 has become extremely competitive in my eyes. iPhone owner here, my next upgrade might not be another one if WP7 keeps impressing me.

Agreed…I am so waiting on WP7 to get these and additonal features to make a switch. That said, if they have a phone like the Galaxy II using WP=AWESOME.

  • Eddie

I hope they include Wifi tethering. Then I will strongly consider switching to WM.

  • YourMom

So when are they getting Copy and Paste?

      Obvious troll is obvious.

      Already have it…nuff said!

      Ask your mom.

The abundance of red really makes this event seen Verizon related since they are the ONLY major US carrier yet to launch a Windows Phone 7 device. However, it does seem like a software showcase, but I wonder if it’s ill-timed because the next set of WP7 devices aren’t scheduled to launch till Sept. Announcing new features now will just piss people off while they have to play the waiting game.
