Foxconn denies making workers sign no-suicide pact

Business

Foxconn on Monday issued a formal response to reports from last week claiming the Chinese electronics manufacturer makes its employees sign a document promising they will not commit suicide or hold the company liable if they do. “Foxconn does not ask its employees to sign any such documents, any reports to the contrary are inaccurate,” a Foxconn spokesperson said in a statement. The company also denied overworking its laborers. “Foxconn takes our responsibility to our employees very seriously and we work hard to give our more than one million employees in China a safe and positive working environment and compensation and benefits that are competitive with all of our industry peers,” the spokesperson said. “In all cases, our basic wages are amongst the highest in our industry in each location and they are significantly higher than the government-directed minimum wage which is set based on a review of the cost of living in those locations.” The statement continued, “All overtime is voluntary and workers are not penalized should they choose not to work overtime.” Foxconn, which manufactures consumer electronics for a variety of companies including Apple, HP, Nokia and Dell, has been scrutinized repeatedly over the past few years following the suicides of at least 17 factory workers.

I don’t get all these Foxconn saga. Is Foxconn forcing Chinese citizens to work for them? If not, then what’s there to complain? Work somewhere else people. That would make Foxconn change the way they treat their employees. Otherwise, let Foxconn do whatever they want as long as it’s non-criminal. It’s their company. They call the shots. And if you don’t like their policies, go find a job somewhere else.

And where do you suggest they work… That laborors’ paradise across the street?

I guess they could all just quit and stop eating… That would really show Foxconn.

      • Alexander530

So it seems like they don’t have no choice but to work for Foxconn. So guess what? They have to put up with it until they find a better employer. It’s called survival.

Either you’re a dickhead or you don’t have children or you’re a dickhead that doesn’t have children. Whatever the case, one or the other is sure to catch up with you and you will realize your comment was idiotic.

China is a communist country with a two class system and its gotten rich from the sweat of their poor. As for your survival comment its fat assed ignorant fuckers like you who know absolutely nothing about survival. Get off the fucking coach stop eating your of chips and try getting a job where you have to break a sweat for your money and you’ll know exactly what the word survival really means. Lazy fat cunts like yourself who push paper all day don’t know what real survival is because you’re all to busy wasting company time blogging stupid comments on the fucking net. I doubt a douche like you would last a day in a Foxxconn like sweatshop.

Not to mention that 17 suicides for their “more than one million employees” is extremely minimal. China had an average of 66 suicide deaths per million in 2008, so the 17 deaths of per million employees at Foxcon is almost 4 times less than national average. Also, the 17 deaths occurred over a period of at least 16 months, so the rate is actually considerably less.

Hey fuckhead that Steve Jobs bullshit excuse is old and stale and nobody believes it any longer. I suggest you try some other bullshit excuse. A sweatshop is a sweatshop asshole. Various former employees have been quoted in the press accusing Foxxconn of short changing them on overtime, employing underage labor, forcing 16 hour days, enforcing militaristic work environment, intentionally denying benefits for work place accidents, demanding 16 hours of standing along with absolutely no talking whatsoever and verbally being abusive to employees to the point employees feared being assaulted. It’s a fucking sweatshop retard and the people there are used so you can save 50 bucks on your iPhone or a 100 bucks on an Acer laptop. That’s the reality of the situation idiot. People are being used and abused so people like you can save a few bucks on a piece of shit gadget that will wind up on the trash heap in under 5 years. So take your stupid comment and shove it straight up your ass and while you’re at it try taking your head out of Steve Jobs ass you might actually find the cool air refreshing

You’re entitled to your opinion, but not to your own facts. Sir Paul is correct. The national average for suicide in the USA (for 2005) was 11.1 per 100,000 (source: wikipedia). So it appears there is some cleaning up to do at home.

Apple knows there have been labor abuses and suicides caused directly by workplace conditions AND STILL CHOOSES TO DO BUSINESS WITH TERRI GOU. Therefore by willingly associating themselves with a sweatshop they’re making themselves part of the problem. If businesses who contract to sweatshops took a stand and said we’re not giving you any more contracts until you clean up your act and improve your human rights violations as an employer the sweatshop owners would be forced to change. Unfortunately companies like Acer Samsung Apple etc don’t care about human rights violations on the foxxconn assembly floor they only care about how much money they can by assembling their gadgets as cheaply as possible. Mega corps are guilty of making money their God therefore they’re every bit as guilty as Foxxcon.

Foxconn is a manufacturing plant. Companies like Apple and Microsoft hire Foxconn to assemble or manufacture parts of their devices. Apple has almost nothing to do with how Foxconn is ran. If your pointing fingers at Apple then point them at Microsoft aswell. Foxconn builds Xbox’s.  like Apple and Microsoft hire Foxconn to assemble or manufacture parts of their devices. So what you’re getting at is just because Microcrap uses Foxxconn for Xbox assembly Apple is less guilty of being assholes? If thats what you’re trying to say you need to get back on your meds and clear your head of the runaway dementia running rampant through your pea brain. It doesn’t matter if Microcrap uses Foxxcon just because they do doesn’t mean apple is any less guilty. All these companies are guilty of stinking like shit.

        Fucking dumb moron

  • Mike

what is the point? Even if they sign such documents, what would be the punishment. “You killed yourself and breached the contract , I am afraid were going to have to let you go”

    • Anonymous

The point is that FOXCONN would not be able to be held liable if one of thier employees committed suicide, and thier family sued.

      • Alexander530

And why should be Foxconn be responsible for someone committing suicide? I don’t get it.

      • LookLively

They are building our phones and tablets in virtual slavery. a SECURITY team enforces PUNISHMENTS issued by supervisors, including forcing you to stand for an entire day with NO break, “suggesting” that you work an extra 80 hrs a month to settle an allegation of insubordination etc.

I bet if you had to watch how your Slate or iPhone was made, you wouldn’t be so keen on buying it.

      • Anonymous

Because their shit work environment mentally scarred the employee to the point they killed themselves you dumb asshole.

  • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

I signed one. But mine said that if I were to ever buy Apple products, i would have to commit suicide.

Where is “Senor Chang”? I’m sure he can shed some light on all of this conn’fusion.

  • LAL

Haha, how could they possibly enforce this? Kill yourself and YOU’RE FIRED! How about not having such shitass miserable working conditions that this isn’t a problem to be solved to begin with?

Oh well, as long as everyone gets their iPhone or iPad who cares how many squinters die, am I right Amurrrrica?

    • Anonymous

Yes, you would be correct. We are America and you work, I’m mean slave, for us.

    • Alexander530

You got that right. Those lazy ass workers at Foxconn are not working fast enough. I need my ipad2 now. I’ve been waiting and waiting. Those workers are to be blamed for the short supply.

    • Anonymous

How about HTC, Samsung, Acer, Sony (fill in company here) handsets? They’re also manufactured there too. If you think you fandroids are any less guilty then iSheep then you also have your heads shoved up your asses.

  • Anonymous

    HA!

  • http://twitter.com/ikemathieu ike|mathieu

why continue to do business with these assholes if they’re so controversial

    • Anonymous

Because this is how companies make money.

  • Terry

You should ask Steve Jobs how much pays ea phone there and how much the iphone sells here.

    • Terry

Polo by Ralph Lauren pays in China $2 ea polo and here $65

    • Anonymous

Foxconn doesn’t just manufacture for Apple. They supply Microsoft and many others as well.  Xbox’s are manufactured there.  there.
