Windows Phone 7 suffers second outage this week

mobile

Microsoft has confirmed that its Windows Phone 7 platform on Friday suffered its second major outage this week. Early on Friday, users began reporting that they could not access Xbox LIVE services from their Windows Phone 7 devices. BGR had independently confirmed the issue on two separate devices, and now Microsoft has acknowledged the outage via its official Windows Phone support team Twitter account. “It’s a new issue that users are unable to access Xbox LIVE features at this time,” a Microsoft official posted to the Twitter account. Earlier this week, Microsoft’s Windows Marketplace suffered an outage that prevented users from accessing the company’s mobile app store during a scheduled maintenance that was extended due to complications.

    Mercy comes in many forms.

Did anyone lose internet access on WP7 as well?

…and nothing of value was lost.

But it’s fixed now. Shouldn’t that be mentioned in the article…?

Misleading headline. Sounds like the entire OS stopped working.

Silver lining: W/o X-Box…on their cellphones *blank stare* some of these guys might actually spend the weekend looking for apartments….and jobs.

nobody cares about wp7 bgr never waste our time with an article about an os nobody uses & is still in beta

A Windows Phone 7 outage? Is that even possible? Could devices still get email? Browser access? Text? Basically the Marketplace and Xbox speed working…the OS didn’t differ an “outage” at all.

Interesting way to post information…with information missing and all.

Actually in the services world, *any* service that goes down for a particular product is an outage. The only thing that is different for each event is the severity.

I will agree with the others above me. Very poor and pathetic use of “Outage” for the headline, not to mention irresponsible reporting.

That would be like posting up “TMOBILE SUFFERS OUTAGE” (because we all know you would *never* use AT&T or Verizon as an example) when the only thing that wasn’t working was visual voicemail services.

At first, I thought that Zach was going to bring better articles and opinion columns to BGR. However now it’s quickly becoming clear that won’t be the case.

Good thing Topolsky and Patel left Engadget/Mobile. While that site has made a 180 for the better, BGR has been constantly getting worse since it was “bought out”.

Maybe it’s a generational thing, but the idea of xbox on my phone is just something I will NEVER care about. Seems like a stupid concept to me, but then I’m an old guy and used to my phone actually doing productive things.

The outage is a publicity black eye for Microsoft, but in the overall scheme of things it’s a small one.

How does a mobile OS suffer from an ‘outage’? The term is more commonly associated with things such as network, lol.

    • Steve Hillshire

True, but to those the “network outage” affects, to the end customer, it is still defined as an outage of a service for a product. The network part is just the technical part of it.

While this was an outage of a service for the WP7 platform, the severity of it is fairly low. Perhaps the wording of the title makes this seems like a major outage which people tend to think as the phone is useless.

      • Anonymous

I think that’s right. The title would lead people to believe that somehow all WP7 devices suddenly became non-responsive, or whatever.

Is this maintainence outage or Security breach?

headline sucks, jeez i though WP7 units were unusable

If there was an outage, it was a blip on the radar… I wasn’t even aware until I read this, and had no issues over the weekend.
