No iPhone 5 this summer according to AT&T rep

mobile

Customer service representatives, while often very helpful, are rarely solid sources for unannounced information. At the same time, there have been cases in the past where customer service reps have unknowingly shared information that was intended to stay behind closed doors, and we have a feeling this could be one of those cases. According to Apple enthusiast blog MacRumors, an AT&T rep recently confirmed to a subscriber that there will not be a new iPhone launching in June or July this year. The correspondence was initiated when the subscriber noticed his eligibility date for an upgrade was pushed back by five months. He contacted AT&T to determine the reason for the move, and was reportedly told the following:

Apple has informed us that they do not plan to release the iPhone in the June to July timeframe, though there will be a newer version in the future. Unfortunately, we have not been given a release time for the new phone. We will release this information on our website when it is available to us.

The news lines up with earlier reports, of course, which state that the iPhone 5 will not launch until September or later. Apple’s next iPhone will be an incremental update according to rumors, and it will reportedly feature Apple’s new A5 processor, an 8-megapixel camera and a case similar to the one found on the iPhone 4.

Wow, well that really throws a bucket of cold water on the whole iphone program! Those of us with aging 3Gs or older iphones must now decide if it’s worth the wait – and frankly, I dont think so – not at all.

There are a number of HTC and Samcsung phones with all the wanted features and larger screens AND they are available now. My 3Gs won’t last until Christmas (if it launches in September, it won’t be available the majority of us until late October, early November – far too late for me) – I’ve been hoping I could make it last until June – so I think I may very well get a Thundebolt like my brother did. It’s a pretty sweet device and has the larger screen, faster processor and 8 mp camera – and I’ve been very impressed with the OS – it’s pretty much as good as iOS now.

Besides, my phone is worn out and it just wan’t make it to Christmas.

I don’t know if the folks at BGR read these comments, but for those of us who have to make the switch, can you put together a comparison of the cool options out there?

Specs don’t mean crap unless they’re integrated properly with the OS, which is why a nearly year old phone with an “obsolete” processor still has a smoother UI than the flashier phones with “faster” processors. The same goes for MPs: the quality of a camera is dependent on many other factors than the number of MPs, which is why the iPhone 4 still has one of the best cameras, despite being “only” 5MP.

      • Martin

but if it was 12mp you guys would be simultaneously spewing/swallowing loads talkin about how much more awesome it is because its a 12 mp cam…

you’re a dork. Anybody with an Android could’ve bought an iPhone.. What are you smoking?

        Mine was free

  • Kevan

This is impossible. I also work for ATT and Apple has not communicated ANYTHING to us about the release date of an “iphone 5″ The also have not communicated anything about an “iphone 5″ at all. The ATT rep above probably got his info from websites such as this one.

Apple doesn’t need to release a new iPhone anytime soon. Unlike the OEM’s who need Android to make their shareholders, CEO’s, CFO’s, money. Apple is doing very well and continues to make a profit for its employee’s, shareholders, CEO’s, CFO’s etc. I like the fact that HTC has used Android OS to make them a very profitable company. When Apple does release i5 it will be like nothing we’ve ever seen before from one single company, it will demolish records.

    • Martin

On top of that, apple has a team of fucktards ready to blow jobs at a moments notice…

      i5? what a fag.

      • 1T2dirtnap

Aww… did I touch your clit with that that statement? The truth can be pleasurable or in your case painful.

      • Martin

        you say i5. nuff said…homo

      • 1T2dirtnap

Sorry if you’re to stupid to know what I was saying without actually spelling it out.

    • Anonymous

You are right, Apple does not need a new phone. But people do and that’s why they are switching to Android en masse.

      • 1T2dirtnap

Uh… NO! They bought Android because every carrier has one, or two, or three. I’m sure you get the point?

Here we go again. 2 post minimum per day for the iPhone 5 from BGR.

As the OFFICIAL Apple iPhone 5 analyst/predictor/Wizard, the new iPhone 5 will indeed be coming out soon as foretold by me this September or later. It will be a JOINT project done by Google and Apple (GOOPLE). It will run a new version of IOS and Android simultaneously. It will copy and paste and paste and copy! It will have four cameras; one camera in each corner of the phone. It will have BBM style SMS popups and Zune integrated iTunes. It will no doubt have a quintuple processor from Qualcomm. This will indeed be a phone to end all phones once and for all.

    • Martin

will it paste and paste and paste?

im an at&t rep. we dont know squat about iphone release dates. ive told people it may not launch in june/july, based on info i read in tech blogs…MAY not launch is my wording though

not only that, subscriber=customer=idiot. ive told customer not to pay their 1st bill until they bring it to me to make sure its right first. they somehow interpret that as “im gonna pay your first bill for you”

so, uninformed CS reps+idiot customers = bullshit story

  • wheresyourgodnow

All of you isheep are so pathetic. Keep defending the shit phone that “your holding wrong”, and where all of your location data is unencrypted. Yes google does track your location. I am aware, but apple leaves that file open for all to see. You all defend this company like your dogma. Its pathetic. Have fun being part of the flock isheep.

Yes, master. Whatever you say, master. Please text future orders to my iPhone, master….

  • Globol909

A ferrari doesn’t have a cup holder. A Honda civic does. I rather have a Ferrari. iPhone 4.

    • Anonymous

Well I guess if you already have a 4 this doen’t apply to you then does it.

For all those of us with a badly depleted 3Gs what do we do get a 4 when I can have a larger screen, faster processor and an 8 mp camera with the Thunderbolt right now?

What kind of idiot would jump on a 4 whether its white ot gold?

Gimme a break – I’m not waiting until Christmas – forget it.

I would think every other non-iPhone maker is hoping for a iPhone-less summer…. especially HP.

Plus Apple needs to squeeze the most out of the unicorn white iPhone 4s.

  • Dmg1223

No customer care reps have any information on the iphone launch, the guys upgrade was pushed back because he probably changed/lowered his plan so his eligibilty date was moved to reflect this.

  • Anonymous

I can’t wait for the next iPhone to come out because I’ll get my wife’s 3GS when she upgrades.

    Android? What’s Android…?

  • Scott

If an AT&T Rep said it…it must be true. (geez)

  • http://twitter.com/BrSwa Brandon

“Apple’s next iPhone will be an incremental update according to rumors…” Not the rumors coming out of the former Engadget/This is my next camp. They have repeated that their sources have told them the iPhone 5 will be a complete redesign. However, we will see what unfolds later this year.

I have serious doubts about this rep’s “confirmation.” I too am an AT&T rep, and as such the only pre-announcement iPhone information I ever see comes from BGR/MacRumors/etc.
I don’t doubt this information is true, I just doubt that this rep has access to any closed-door Apple info.
Either way, this rep is probably about to promoted to “customer.”
