HP Veer 4G to launch May 15th on AT&T

Breaking

HP and AT&T on Wednesday announced that the latest webOS smartphone, the HP Veer 4G, will become available later this month as an AT&T exclusive. HP unveiled the bite-sized Veer webOS phone at a press event back in February, and at that time we thought the device was a tad too small for our liking. The Veer features solid specs, a crisp, bright touchscreen and a solid build, however, so petite AT&T subscribers seeking a sleek new smartphone should definitely check it out. The HP Veer 4G will cost $99.99 on contract in either black or white when it launches from AT&T on May 15th. Hit the break for the full press release.

4G Portfolio

AT&T is a pioneer in smartphones and devices, and expects to widen its portfolio in 2011. In January, AT&T committed to introducing 20 4G devices by the end of the year.  Available exclusively to AT&T customers, HP Veer 4G will be one of several 4G devices offered in the first half of 2011.

Customer Benefits

With the HP Veer 4G, AT&T customers can have it all – access to the web, apps, social networks and more, all in one powerfully small design. For those who value size, pocketability and style, Veer offers a refreshing alternative to the larger smartphone devices that are currently in the market, without compromising on functionality.

Powered by HP webOS, Veer offers an advanced browser and an incredibly fast processor for a fantastic web experience including Adobe Flash support, plus 8GB of internal user storage and a full keyboard that slides out for fast texting and email.  Notifications instantly display messages, reminders, and Facebook® updates on a vivid 2.6-inch touchscreen, with instant messages, texts and pictures from the same person available all in one view.

HP Veer 4G comes preloaded with several popular apps including mobile hotspot and AT&T Navigator.  The mobile hotspot functionality*** allows users to share wireless internet connectivity with up to five Wi-Fi-enabled devices while AT&T Navigator**** a GPS-enabled navigation service, is designed to provide you with clear and precise audible and visual turn-by-turn driving directions, including full-color moving maps, using GPS directly from your wireless phone.

In addition, thousands of apps are available at your fingertips in the redesigned webOS App Catalog – social networking, health and fitness, productivity, finance, games—you name it. With Veer, customers are able to keep multiple apps open at once and easily switch back and forth between them. Purchasing apps is now even easier with the addition of carrier billing. With consumers getting more comfortable with 4.3″ screens, I’m not sure they are working the best strategy.

    Boo on AT&T.

  • Cornbread

Why on earth would anyone get this phone? No ecosystem, inferior screen etc and still mandated to pay the $15 data fee, for the same price you can have an iPhone or Android with better specs and tons of apps. This makes no sense, can anyone provide a good reason to get this phone?

I assume you’ve never used Web OS?

      • Cornbread

I had a Pre the day it came out. Battery was atrocious. The os is good, but apps and hw have been awful. Assume nothing and you won’t look like a jackass.

        Chill bro!

      • serpentor

So, you *assume* nothing has changed since they first released the Pre.

Yo bro I ain’t got no chill homey home slice, just chillin yo with the web os bro and it ain’t no chill on the window sill.

Seeing the specification, I can tell this 4G imposter with 800mhz processor is going to sit on the shelf for a loooooong time.

I love WebOS but these devices really do not appeal to me at all

it’s look like AT&T switched position with Verizon
Verizon get the good phones and AT&T is not.

I’m guessing that in these exclusive deals the carrier has to make a damn huge purchase or else the phone makers wouldn’t be doing the exclusive thing.

Anyone here familiar with AT&Ts ’4G’ network in NYC, i.e., is it as glaringly atrocious as their “3G” network?

    • Steve

Same network, renamed. Sad but true.

ugh, would love to grab one of these to use when i want a small phone to carry around the city, but just not worth it in view of the horrendous service; i wonder if VZW might pick this unit up?

They won’t even bother to make a CDMA version for Verizon until they see some encouraging sales numbers from AT&T. Anybody want to guess how many will be sold at AT&T? 11? 12 maybe?

Wtf is up with the crazy form factor? Are they really that dumb not to realize that it was the main reason why Palm died. Everyone on planet earth agrees that Webos is great but the hardware suck ass. Why can’t these idiots get that. Kill the crazy form factor already, damn. Make it look like a HTC or new LG device and you will sell millions. I’ll shave my head bold if they sell more than 500 units of the bullshit Veer.

    • Cornbread

I’ll shave my ass if they sell more than 6. Hell, I may shave my ass anyway

  • Spdr-Mn

I can’t wait to get this! I’m coming from a Pixi Plus, so, I should feel right at home. Many people are asking why anybody would want this phone. I’ll give my reasons. It’s running webOS 2.+, it’s small and pocketable, and it’s the perfect companion to the HP TouchPad (which I’ll also be getting, hopefully). Not everyone wants (or needs) 4.3 inch monsters in their pockets. Veer has a Snapdragon and 512MB RAM inside, it does what I want and how I want it, and that’s enough for me. I do agree that the price is a bit steep, though. It should have been $49.99.

  • Jayden

Why must exclusive deals still continue???

At least release this bad boy on T-Mobile as well…

There should be no reason why Verizon and Sprint can’t release this or the Pre 3 as well…

  • http://www.robwerlinger.com Rob Werlinger

I do like the larger screen phones, but I’m at the point where I always have a tablet device of some kind with me, so maybe a phone with a smaller form factor like the Veer would be a nice change of pace.

    910 mAh battery..

    Are you kidding HP?

    • serpentor

We are talking about a 2.6″ screen.

I’m willing to bet it gets the same battery life as the average smartphone – meaning last the day.

  • http://twitter.com/qriusme qriusme

Instead of this Veer, they should have gone the other way and created a 4″ or 4.3″ phone. Palm seems so out of touch sometimes – who’s driving that ship??

  • Anonymous

Another Webos device to take up a little space on AT&T shelfs just to collect dust…yawn!

Black AND White models?!? Where are the thickness tests ala iPhone? =)
