Hon Hai to build Nintendo’s Wii 2; Nintendo to take delivery beginning in October

Gaming

Terry Gou’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. is said to have landed an exclusive contract to build Nintendo’s next-generation video game console. According to a report on Wednesday from Taiwan Economic News, Hon Hai could begin shipping the Wii 2 to Nintendo as soon as this coming October. Nintendo’s Wii console had consistently been a best seller for the gaming giant, but interest has finally begun to dwindle as competitive offerings pick up steam despite their age. Nintendo’s Wii 2 is said to be a direct attack the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and it will supposedly feature AMD’s new Radeon R700 GPU for outstanding graphics performance and HD video capabilities. With a rumored retail price between $350 and $450, the console may also be much more expensive than Nintendo’s current Wii console. A Wii 2 that lines up with these rumors would be an interesting move for Nintendo, which has found tremendous success with an inexpensive console aimed at more casual gamers compared to its competitors.

It is a tea cup with a lid. This is a Chinese thing originating back from Mao times.

A tea cup with a lid, a spit can and an ash tray.

no one would pay $450 for any POS that nintendo makes especially in this economy. if its more expensive than a 360, only a very rich person or a very stupid person (most likely the latter) would waste their money on that garbage.

You can’t assume it’s garbage without seeing the specs.

The 360, and PS3 are built on some pretty old tech now. It could easily blow them away… if Nintendo wanted to try and build something for harder core gamers.

Of course, it could truly just be a more powerful Wii which would be essentially garbage.

An Xbox 360 Kinect bundle goes for $400, so it isn’t outrageous to think a Nintendo system could do well at the same price point.
The Wii and Kinect showed that people will pay for a neat new gimmick. If the next Wii’s only new gimmick is HD, then it will be a tough sell.

      1. Nintendo never makes “POS”. They always have the lowest defect rate by far.
      2. This will be sub-$400, easily.
      3. This will be significantly more powerful than PS360.
      4. This will gain all the same core 3rd party titles as PS360 (and their future versions) as well as the unmatched Nintendo IPs.

I can’t wait to see what games are at launch.

I know you are lover of all things Nintendo. but until they get it through the skulls that they need to appeal to the serious gamer they will not have the success that they are craving. I doesn’t matter how powerful the system is. IF i feel like i am playing a game built for a 10 year old i will not get the system, nor support it. This is the EXACT reason i sold my Wii, and i refuse to buy any DS unit. Once they start making games on the same line as xbox and Playstation then it will start to move, not a moment before.

Did you actually read my post? #4 in particular addresses your issue. Furthermore, only a kid thinks games like super Mario, zelda, metroid, smash brothers, Mario Kart, etc are designed for 10 year olds. They’re designed for anyone and for that reason they are 20+m sellers. Something almost none of your ideas of grown-up games will even be 1/2 of.

However, the lack of 3rd party games on wii is why I also own a ps3. This new system seems to be aimed at offering it all.

Um, isn’t the general consumer market bigger than the market for “hardcore gamers”? I mean, if you’re a really hardcore gamer, you use a PC.

Well I guess I’m a 10 year old, because I’ve loved all my DS systems, Zelda, Mario, Smash Bros, etc. Or wait, maybe, possibly, Nintendo makes some good f@*king quality first party titles, which is why they sell millions upon millions when they’re released.

Nintendo found a niche that differentiates and makes them MORE successful. It’s naive to try and compete on sheer power. Why did both Microsoft and Sony adopt motion controls?
I own both Sony and Nintendo. At $250, the former was cheap. Ultimately, at $300, the latter became competitive.
You sold the Wii because you didn’t like it. good for you. You criticize it expecting it to be like everything else. silly.

if you don’t pick up a nintendo that’s one more available to the smarter audience.

        $300!
Nintendo would do well not to set too high a premium over their previous generation launch price especially since the economy hasn’t recovered.
For years, they launched their consoles at $200. With Wii, they bumped it up to $250. Low launch price is key to their strategy. At $300, it is not a big premium and they put pressure on Sony to drop their price on PS3 again.

        HD 1080p definitely.
        Would love for 3840×2160,24p (240Hz) 3D but that’s a pipedream. ;-)

To truly innovate I’d like somebody to innovate by modifying the 3D shutter technology to allow for separate simultaneous fullscreen perspectives. Then, it might be worth $400. but we’re not ready.

Include full color camera instead of strictly infrared motion camera (lightbar/wiimote combo).

I don’t think they’ll go with Blu-ray but they need to move to higher capacity media. I think a derivative of an SD card or a derivative of the HD-DVD.

      Sounds like someone is butthurt

I doubt any console will ever be priced right to make it worthwhile. As this rumor stands, a 1080p Wii2 seemingly will be $100-$200 overpriced. Maybe I’ll pick up the original when it drops to $99.

I’ll be $150 with a new Mario Kart Wii bundle on May 15th. Probably see some kind of gift card based discount this holiday to bring it down to $100.

Unfortunately just purchased a Wii at the $169 price. And was planning on buying Mario Kart.

How long ago? Every retailer has a 30day return policy. Take it back.

Well that makes Xmas for the kids easy this year.

Is there a particular reason that consoles, unlike PMPs and tablets and the like, only get hardware updates like every 5-7 years? Obviously, form factors change. But why don’t they bump the processor every year? The iPad, which has power comparable to the original Xbox, shows that you can update the processor (iPad 2) and still play games designed for a lower processor, while gaining the benefit of newer games have improved features.

I mean, how old are the processors inside the Xbox 360 and PS3?

90% of the reason consoles are successful is their plug and play setup – no need to install drivers, check specs for compatibility or performance, or any of that. If you buy an Xbox game, you know it’s guaranteed to work with your Xbox. If you buy a Playstation game, it’s going to work with your Playstation without any question of how well or if you have the right kind of setup.

If you start changing specs frequently (or even at all), you end up with different levels of compatibility that takes away from the point of a console in the first place. In the portable computer market (tablets, phones, etc) it’s okay to change specs because most software is already designed to work with a wide variety of hardware. With consoles, the games are designed to work on one type of hardware setup and changing ANYTHING can lead to incompatibility, customer support issues, and a whole host of problems that no company wants to deal with.

ALong with that, consoles are usually sold at a loss in the beginning. By keeping the technology the same as time goes on, your costs decrease and eventually you get to the point of profiting off your hardware since you’re selling older technology that costs less to manufacture.

I hope that this means that we will get tons of inventory. If this is the case then I’m sure to get one. I don’t want a sell out like what happened with the wii. I really don’t.

I think I will be one of the quoted “Stupid People” who will be paying this much for the console.

This is really good article to read. I am really interesting about Nintendo WII 2. I think it will have greater hardware than current PS3 or Xbox. I am big fan of Nintendo gaming console and games.
