Motorola ATRIX 4G HSUPA update begins rolling out

mobile

Motorola on Tuesday finally announced that the HSUPA-enabling ATRIX 4G update thousands of users have been clamoring for has finally begun rolling out to devices. Software update v4.1.83 for the ATRIX 4G includes several updates that Motorola claims will improve device performance — none of those improvements will have quite the dramatic impact that enabling HSUPA will, of course. AT&T had disabled HSUPA when the ATRIX 4G was first released, and countless of users gathered on forums to complain of the slow upload speeds they were experiencing on their “4G” devices. Thousands of angry ATRIX owners even signed a petition to voice their disdain. AT&T finally responded and told users a future update would enable HSUPA, and now that update is finally available. Motorola has issued the OTA update and users should receive a notification once it is queued up for their devices. Impatient ATRIX owners can also initiate the update manually from within the device settings.

You buy a 4g phone but have to wait for the 4g???

    • Whoru

The download speeds where 4G in 4G areas, but the upload was not active until today.

Why would u buy a phone that does not support the area u know ur broadband company is going? Its like buying an analog TV when u know digital is the future.

      • Whoru

What? That makes no sense. You mean it’s like buying a digital tv in an analog area.

      • Anonymous

Every digital TV supports analog, that is not the case the other way around. The same way every “4g” cellphone supports 3g, however there is no 3g phone that supports 4g. (Insert ur HSPA+ is 3g jokes here.)

Now to my point, if u know 4g is the future whether or not ur area supports it or not. Why not get a 4g phone because u know in time ur area will be covered? Its not like if u get a 4g phone and ur in a non 4g area u will not have service. Perhaps u need to think harder before u deem something nonsensical.

Because a software update fixes the 4G… IF I BOUGHT A 3G PHONE IT WOULD *NEVER* GET 4G SPEEDS!!!!

      isudumb???

Yeah pretty much, but no one knew that in the begining because ATT never told us. Sneaky as hell. And now that the update is slowly coming out, people are still not even close to seeing “4g” speeds. Its ridiculous.

    @Wut The Eff

Wouldn’t be so bad to wait if the Network promising 4G, actually could have 4G. I feel so bad for those Atrix rockin’ Android brothers.

    • Bluemayskye

What’sto feel bad about this phone works awesome.

      • Anonymous

I know it’s awesome (wish Verizon had it) but, no 4G which is in the name and the 3G, based on experience, is spotty at best. That phone needs to be on a REAL network with REAL Voice and Data connectivity.

You are exactly right, I’ve had my atrix since the day before it launched in stores and I love it. But the “4g” network is ashame. I flashed yhr update a few days ago before the weekend, and it does uncap upload speeds but now its as fast as an iphone 4. I get 3mbs down and 1.5 mbs up, and im in philly where ATT shows on it’s map as being a 4g hspa+ network. Obviously I am not getting 4g speeds and waiting and groaning about this update really didn’t do much. Still love my phone though. Running gingerblur 3.0 on the new 1.83 update.

Why feel bad??? What else was I supposed to do… rock an iPhone??? My Atrix is HELLA FASTER THAN MY WIFES iPHONE4… It’s why she’s switching to an Atrix as soon as the contract is up in a month…

      • derp

How the hell is her contract up in a month? iPhone 4 has been out for just shy of a year now. AT$T only does two year contracts, and you’re in NYC judging by your website that appears when I click on your handle.

      • derp

Sorry for the confusion, but I meant Hawaii; I saw NYC in Pap’s handle. That’s still the US, and AT$T holds their two year contracts like deathwishes.

Any idea when the Bell mobility update in Canada will roll out? Skype and other voip clients do not work, and this update claims to fix the problem

  • http://profiles.google.com/s.rees06 Stefan Rees

What about Canada?! We have the Atrix, too!

    • Anonymous

I’m sure your update is coming soon. I would’ve thought you guys would have it before us.

  • http://twitter.com/gajetman Joe Silverton

With the new update I’m getting 7.33 mbps down and 2.00 mbps up. Really fast now. I’m in Chicago.

    • Mark Mayle

Where in Chicago are you seeing such speeds? I am in the suburbs and have not seen anything that fast yet even after the update. I would like to corroborate your findings so we can see if 4G (HSPA+) really exists. An approximate location would be appreciated.

  • Tm2924

Download it update, no improvement in Saint Louis. 2 down, .02 up.

  • wow mom cool

NYC just installed. Best speedtest result from my apartment is 3.15 down and 1.64 up. Ciuple other tries lowesr was 2.1 down and 0.19 up.

However u seem to be connect ti HSPA, not HSUPA. Those speeds are a good improvement from what i had before

  • Anonymous

Should be very interesting to see how that turns out. Wow. Thats pretty fast dude.

    Great, now… what about Gingerbread?

  • DK

Battery life seems to be significantly improved. I haven’t seen any improvement in speed but it’s because of I am outside of ATT’s “4G” coverage area, I guess. So far, so gooood!

I think we should all get an attorney and file a class action against AT&T for selling a device that is 4G without disclosing that 4G wasn’t available to the individual purchaser! They must disclose that information. That would be like selling you a car and telling you it is a car and it actually being a truck or crossover. It never amazes me the deceitful practices of big business to make a dollar off the backs of customers!

  • JMD

Wow!  It’s funny how some sites treat folks that at vcalue to their website,…like closing a post if they don’t like the content!  That really sucks!  Anyway, I just picked up the Atrix yesterday to see if it’s worthy of replacing my very slow BB 9800.  First, I’ll go on record to say that I really,…I mean really like the BB UI!  It’s is in many ways the best UI of all Cph.  The main issue for BB is their hardware,…and amy will say that the 9800 was released way under spec for its competitors.  Now, RIM finds themself in a hurt locker!  somehting I learned a few years ago and it’s this,…very few mfrs are actually loyal to their customers.  Trust me,..they are far more loyal to the $dollar$ than they will ever be to their customers.  That said,…I will also go on record that Apple prolly has the best rating for loyalty to their customers,….as they really care about how their product performs and has taking a clear understanding that in order to be the boss,…you have to be willing to pay the cost,…and give customers what they want,…need and or desire.  The single most thing I miss about the 9800 thus far is not the UI,…as I know I’ll will adjust and become quite fluid with the Android OS,….the thing I miss most thus far is the BB Trackpad!  yep,…you got  it,..it’s not the key board,…it’s actually the trackpad.  I miss being within a webpage and having the ability to navigate with the trackpad and selecting a hyperlink with it just as one does with a pc mouse.  So, it is with my opinion that RIM simply needs a device on par with the performance of the Motorola Atrix,…becuase that’s what I’m currently test driving right not.  I figure it’s the only way I will know if I can live with this Droid over my BB,…my BB 9800.

As always, there are Pros and Cons on both sides of the isle.  Like the ability to view Flash content and have an entire screen chocked with short-cuts to websites.  The BB has a better camera,…AF wise,…and better music player.  The Atrix feels more solid,…it is more solid,..even though it has a plastic back.  The Atrix has a super larg btry,…for that bigger and faster processor and 4″ screen.  The BB has a decent screen and better.
I really like the “Fingerprint reader”,…it works fast and works every time!  I like “Swype” too,…and see that given some time,…i could really fly using it.  i also like the ability to voice-to-text!  However,…I also like my BB,…not for what it can’t do,…but for what it does do,…and does very well,…albeit not as fast as the Atrix.  Something else i noticed,…when on WiFi,…the Atrix really,..I mean really, burns rubber!  The things screams speed,…and it certainly does not disappoint!  Moving on,..holding the Atrix sans an outer case sucks.  It feels like it will slip out of your hands at anytime.  The sides of the plastic back shold have been textured for better grip.  By contrast, the 9800 feels quite bulky within the Otter-Box case.  Taking another step forward,…some have stated that the Bold 900 had the best sounding speaker for a cph!  Well, I’m here to tell you that there is a new king to that title.  The Atrix speaker,..speaker box sounds better than any cph speaker I have ever hear period!  Cudos to Moto.r.o.l.a. for a job well done.

Lastly, now what the Atrix severely needs is a freak’n network!  AT&T’s network,…their 4G network literally sucks out the arse!  They even admit themself.  So to that, I surely hope the T-MO acquisition goes through.

I have both phones connected BT via my BlueAnt Q2 (…the absolute best BT headset on the planet)!

I would have made thos post in that other website that caterly highyl to BBs,…but they are too stuck on themselves.  Thanks BGR for being open-minded!

    That’s it for now.

      Cheers…
