Sony suffers another major security breach

Security

Nikkei.com on Monday reported that an online Sony gaming network has once again fallen victim to a cyberattack. This time, the attack may have exposed the credit card numbers of thousands of Sony customers from around the world. According to the report, over 12,700 customer credit card numbers were stolen during a breach of Sony’s online gaming network, Sony Online Entertainment. According to Nikkei.com, Sony discovered the possible attack on Sunday. Sony recently suffered a similar attack on its PlayStation Network, which was offline for days as a result of the breach. Though Sony has yet to confirm this new incident publicly, the Sony Online Entertainment portal has been taken offline while Sony investigates the matter.

hasn’t the online network been down since last week? How could they have attacked it again?!

    • Anonymous

sony online entertainment and playstation network are two completely different networks…

      • Anonymous

Sony already have replied to this story, and they say that nothing was taken (credit cards that is).

    • BIGG13

SOE is a Sony network for PC.

      • http://profiles.google.com/lmoustafa11 Lino Moustafa

it is also an online network for PS3 (DC universe online), but their systems are separate from SCE and SNEI, which is where the PSN comes from.

WTF sony! Better get the Vaio department on it now.

This is a non-story. How about Apple tracking your every move down to +/- 2.3cm and transmitting that data to the LAPD? That’s a story.

Ill-informed troll is ill-informed. And also a twat.

PSN is still down! Lol do your homework

    • http://twitter.com/JiggyZ33 Justin Gabel

No offense, but telling people to do your homework is pretty comical when you didn’t even read the post. This is referring to the Sony Online Entertainment portal, not the Playstation Network. They are two separate online networks, with SOE primarily used for PC gaming.

“Sony recently suffered a similar attack on its PlayStation Network, which was offline for days as a result of the breach.”

Did you even read the post? Dumb ass!

      • Jamerson90

Obviously you can’t comprehend what similar means. Seperate instance, not the same instance. That is stating PSN suffered an attack, and that SOE (a seperate entity) suffered a similar attack. Please read

      • Scott

        @Jamerson90

I know both got hacked, so yes, I can read. The whole point is that Zach doesn’t know that PSN is STILL down, which is what ADRIan posted about. So thank you for wasting our time. Please, move along now.

      • Jamerson90

I don’t see anywhere in that article it states that PSN is actually up. It is still technically days until 14 days when it changes to weeks, and even then the downtime could be measured in days

      • wont argue with fools

@ jamerson – Obviously you can’t comprehend the difference between past and present tense. The article states that the psn “was offline” not “has been offline” for days. The past tense implies that the psn has been restored.

I actually hate myself just a little for taking the time to correct you, but you’re making the longhorns look bad. Even after Scott explained his comment, you responded as if he was the one missing something.

Don’t bother responding, because there isn’t anything you can say to defend yourself. The wording in the original article is wrong. And you were wrong in defending it. I’m not gonna respond either way, because of that whole adage about “Never argue with a fool, on lookers may not be able to tell the difference.” It’s something everyone on here (and in every comment section, everywhere) should heed.

    They brought this on themselves.

HERP DERP…. People, PSN != SOE

SOE is the network used for the MMO’s such as DC Universe Online

PSN is the network used for the Playstation.

Before you criticize the article please try to get your facts straight.

For those who don’t know: SOE != PSN. Different networks and CC databases, same company.

Seems like some hackers have it out for SONY… I wonder why that might be…

Btw, I’m so happy to have been drawn into the middle of this mess.

  • Anonymous

Even though that may be my credit card information…

    Good! Fuck Sony.

  • Palfrei

Sony is about to launch its Xperia play phone, which competes directly against Apple iPhone and Sony online gaming services get hacked twice in less than two weeks?

It does seem curious to say the least.

    • Anonymous

      It’s already been released.

USA isn’t the only country in the world…

  • Anonymous

This is a lesson to Sony, don’t F**k with the hacking community.

    • Str8upx

I couldn’t agree more. Its time for these companies to realize that when we pay shit-loads of $ for their products we should be free to do whatever we want with them.

    • http://about.me/dwayneboothe DBX00

Yeah, because I’m really going to side with a hacker who is selling my credit card information to the highest bidder. Find them, fine them, and put them in jail for 30 years. Every activist thinks their cause justifies their action, but stealing personal information is against the law and they should receive punishment accordingly.

      • loki

Ahahaha, another Sony True Believer. I am not too worried about my credit card. I simply suspended my account, requested a new credit card #, and thats about it. I rather have these bastards (Sony) understand that they have pissed of a good amount of people for negligence on their part and how they treat their customers.

If Sony set themselves up for failure (like most large companies do) then they deserve what they get. They (the large companies) become arrogant and loose sight of what makes them such a success. Here is a hint: The Customers!!!

Wont surprise me if it happens a third time. To some degree it shows you how comfortable the suites have become at Sony and how complacent the customers have become for taking their shit.

        Long like the Hackers!!!

      • Anonymous

“negligence on their part and how they treat their customers.”

Ok…how have they neglected me? As a customer.

Before the security breach, which you are claiming is a response to some already existent negligence.

  • Drew

I don’t know, maybe it’s just me but Sony, how about you stop trying to take hackers to court and spend that money on some freakin’ security and encryption on your network.

  • Anonymous

This is something that PR cannot fix. They actually need to increase security as soon as possible and leave the network offline until they do.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2BNOIBHBFICJEAPJLGHKK3WHPE DADDY WARBUCKS

ever since Sony went after GeoHotz and sued him, is when all of this mess started.

  • http://www.myvouchercodes.co.uk/ online stores uk

This is worse than anyone could ever imagine .I was monitoring my account every day while waiting for Sony to give a full disclosure on the extent of the hack, but I’m waiting no more. I’m cancelling my credit card and getting a new one.

  • Sefiroh

hey zach!! you suck !! the PSN is STILL down with no real end in sight. find a new hobby.

  • http://www.SynchPST.com/ Janna Kuan

This is a very serious matter. I love Sony products and letting these private info be seen publicly is scary. I sure hope that Sony fixes this thing though and go through investigations, it could some foul play or something. For the mean time, I hope the privacy of customer accounts is their number 1 priority.

Well, I’m sure this will pass and when that time comes, please put up a stricter and stronger security. We don’t want this incident to be happening again, right?

  • KCRic

Holy sh!t this is old news! I got the email last week.

  • http://profiles.google.com/lmoustafa11 Lino Moustafa

None of the credit card info stolen was from the US, nor was it a recent database. SOE announced it was a database from 2007, and affected other countries such as Germany, Austria, etc. See below:

“Customers outside the United States should be advised that we further discovered evidence that information from an outdated database from 2007 containing approximately 12,700 non-US customer credit or debit card numbers and expiration dates (but not credit card security codes) and about 10,700 direct debit records listing bank account numbers of certain customers in Germany, Austria, Netherlands and Spain may have also been obtained. We will be notifying each of those customers promptly.

There is no evidence that our main credit card database was compromised. It is in a completely separate and secured environment.”

No reason for US consumers to worry….now about that PSN network….

  • Jactosis

Interesting that Rift banners are plastered all over this site. I’d call that good product placement.

  • Nugget

SONY always charge hi price for their stuff even if its crap flimsy plastic, so its no surprise that they have crap flimsy security to match, Get a grip fix the damn thing with better encryption instead of running round like headless chickens and shouting oh no we’ve been hacked, Crazy.
