RIM announces BlackBerry 7; brings HTML 5, BlackBerry Balance to handsets [Updated]

Included in the company’s barrage of press releases this morning, Research In Motion officially announced BlackBerry 7. The new smartphone operating system — formerly known as BlackBerry 6.1 — brings HTML 5 and a new Just-In-Time (JIT) JavaScript engine to the browser, along with BlackBerry Balance support, enhanced universal search, and a new “Liquid Graphics” theme. BlackBerry 7 will debut on the recently announced BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 — the company did not, however, mention if older hardware would be upgraded to the new code.

UPDATE: RIM has confirmed that BlackBerry devices currently in-market will not be upgraded to BlackBerry 7.

There will probably will be a 6.1 update for the 9800 and 9780 that will bring the browser updates, BBM6 and Social fedd 2.0.

None of the current devices will be upgradeable to BB7…I am not happy at all.

you won’t get the full 7, but it’ll end up being a lite version of it. When all the leaked docs came out, the new curve was set to get the 6.1 lite, so i’m assuming it’ll be the same for some of the “newer” devices like the 9780

It is also for sure that none of the OS7 devices will be able to run QNX so, what do we do? SHould we buy a new phone to run OS7 and then another when QNX is released (expensive) or, do we sit on the fence and ignore OS7 and wait for the real news which will be QNX.

Personally I am sticking with my 9700 on OS6 until QNX is released UNLESS there is a reall killer reason for me to move to OS7.
