Balsillie: BlackBerry 6.1 now BlackBerry 7, still not QNX-based

Software

Research In Motion’s co-CEO, Jim Balsillie, confirmed a rumor that has been circulating the Internet over the past several days: BlackBerry 6.1 will come to market as BlackBerry 7. We gave you a quick look at the operating system running on the Bold Touch, Touch and Torch 2, and, as you can see, the cosmetic changes are minor. During the company’s shipment warning issuance yesterday, Balsillie quipped that 6.1 was “such a big update” that they felt obliged to knight the software BlackBerry 7. It was rumored that the company’s seventh major operating system revision would be based on QNX’s code base, however it now looks like the BlackBerry faithful will have to wait for BlackBerry 8 for handsets running the high-test OS.

I don’t really like this disconnect between release numbers and software revision numbers it reminds me of the whole Final Fantasy III (USA) / Final Fantasy VI (JAP) debacle.

  • GROOVES12

In reality it really should be called OS 4.9

I call it North American Symbian.

Munchbach is a douche that never posts anything positive about RIM

    • http://about.me/brandonmccall brandonmccall

The reality is there isn’t anything positive to be said other than the fact that BlackBerry owners can say, “I know you got that BBM I sent you.” to one another.

    • Sergio

Perhaps RIM should consider doing something worthy of a positive post.

  • Sergio

Sweeet…. this should put RIM right back on top. I mean now it’s going to be .9 better right?

    • anDROIDfan

I think they’re doing this so when they have a QNX based system they can call it Blackberry X, or something like that.

    • Anonymous

they should have just went right to 11.

  • Nobody

Now RIM can party like it’s 2006…….#fail

If I were RIM I wouldn’t even announce this….. This crap should have came out 1.5 yrs ago

  • Anonymous

    Meh

6.5 also works if it was so big that a minor .1 release didn’t do it justice. Going to 7 after they just release 6 is just wrong.

That phone looks down right sexy, nice job RIM. Now just run android apps on it and boom you have a success.

  • rizz

I would love to see what the “major (OS)changes” are to warrant such a number bump, because from what I have seen, it does not look an different from OS6.

  • Pos network

Rim is done. They will forever be one of the pioneers of the smart phone. But there time has come and is now going.

I remember when the 8830 world phone was the best phone on the market.

    Rip Rim

  • max

that picture looks straight out of 1998.

Personally I would like to see what is actually in OS7 before I praise or condemn it.

  • http://twitter.com/CoachHuy Huy Nguyen

The decision to call it OS7 is probably to make the OS be unique for their upcoming devices. So RIM doesnt have to feel obligated to shoehorn this OS for older devices.

This is getting painful to watch, RIM…
