Verizon launches 'Unleashed' $50 unlimited prepaid service

mobile

Trying to save a few bucks for your summer vacation? Today, Verizon Wireless officially launched “Unleashed,” the carrier’s own unlimited prepaid service. A spokesperson told Fierce Wireless that the service is available in parts of Florida and Southern California, to start. Customers can choose between four different plans — including daily and by-the-minute — but the most attractive offering is a $50 monthly option that provides unlimited calling, texting, and web browsing. There are only three feature phones available from Unleashed right now, including the LG Accolade ($39.99), the LG Cosmos ($99.99), and the Pantech Caper ($79.99). By contrast, Boost Mobile, which offers a similar $50 monthly unlimited plan, has 18 different phones including a few that are powered by Android. If you’re looking to save some cold hard cash without sacrificing cell phone minutes or text messages — or Verizon’s coverage — then Unleashed should do the trick.

People really use prepaid service plans ?

      Like you wouldn’t believe.

I was a rep in a major national retail store where the town’s average credit rating was about a 3…it was uncommon to see people who needed $700 deposits to get one line.

We sold Boost Mobile like it was going out of style. Even when all they had were the Candybar i260-somethings….

      • http://twitter.com/MrKow84 Kyle

so its just for people with bad credit basically eh ?

Actually Kyle, there are lots of reasons to go prepaid. A reliable monthly bill, for one. No contract/ETF to worry about. More control over usage/costs. If you’re cash-strapped or simply don’t have a credit history, prepaid lets you avoid a hefty deposit. Between Boost and Virgin, Sprint’s prepaid brands offer a pretty decent selection of phones as mentioned in the article.

And to add to justinkramp’s comment, the deals are really just plain better on BM and Virgin. Now, if they would carry some decent high end, cutting edge Android phones…

      • d2

I use prepaid and have an excellent credit score. You have more control with prepaid. No contracts etc. Most people In Europe and other countries also go prepaid.

      • http://twitter.com/malexander131 Mike Alexander

The prepaid deals are much better than they were a few years ago. There was def. a time when it was hard to get a decent phone and not get ripped off on a prepaid plan.

        Serpentor….

I don’t like you…. You sound like an ignorant consumer. First of all …verizon have never carried this plan…but for $50 bucks that’s amazing for something that is $120 plus you are on the Verizon network instead of BM or Virgin Mobile….because these providers only buy buckets of minutes from big companies such as Verizon or AT&T…but they are small companies so they can only buy minutes from certain sections which lead to poor service/reception in metropolitan areas. WIth Verizon Unleash…you get the full strength of Verizon Wireless for just $50 for UNLIMITED Calls/Text/Web. GET IT STRAIGHT PUNK!!!

      • Chupaloma

is for smart ppl only not for ppl who want credit like u and later they can’t pay it so fuck off !!!

      • Help

That is not necessarily true Kyle….Not everyone wants 2 be tied in 2 a contract……

    • http://twitter.com/hawaiiinsomniac hawaiiinsomniac

Yup, I sure do, $25 Virgin Mobile baby! I’ll never get a phone on contract again!

    • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Or because it’s apparently wayyyyy cheaper. $50 for unlimited talk, text, and web? Sprint is $70 and it’s unlimited talk to mobile.

      • drew dogg

        Plus $10 for smart phones.

      • http://infotainmentempire.blogspot.com Rob

Oh yes, how could I forget. The smartphone fee that evolved from a 4G device fee…

    • BartlettIT

heck yeah. Virgin Mobile’s $25/month plan with unlimited data and texting is just right.

    • Anonymous

Just because you’re dumb enough to pay for a contract phone doesn’t mean others are.

  • http://twitter.com/hawaiiinsomniac hawaiiinsomniac

The Verizon phones suck for this plan! Try Boost Mobile or Virgin Mobile. You can get an Android 2.2 phone and ones with better keyboards!

    • Anonymous

Or Metro PCS… if they are in your area.

  • Anonymous

I was hoping they were gunna make it so ppl could use a smartphone on this plan and just pay an extra $29.99 for unlimited data. I guess that would be too convenient for the consumers, so they had to screw it up by adding stipulations.

    • http://twitter.com/WhyCantMyPhone Neal Elward

Something along those lines would be nice. If I could get unlimited everything on Verizon, using a smartphone, for less than $75/month, it would be a no-brainer. I would be happy to pay full retail for the devices to get that pricing and flexibility.

  • Anonymous

If Verizon allowed people to pay full price for a 3G Android phone, and pay the $50 a month Id hit that plan.

    • Bringit

They’ll give you the 3G Android phone.

      • http://twitter.com/WhyCantMyPhone Neal Elward

Not with a plan like that, though.

  • Scott

Straight Talk still seems better…prepaid phones are junk.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, if you want to use a Wal-Mart phone. I won’t even buy meat at Wal-Mart, much less a phone.

  • Matthew

to bad this isnt for smartphones.

  • Jim

In many countries prepaid has been the preferred way to go. Prepaid for some of the US carriers is growing while postpaid has flat-lined. There are many good reasons for people with good credit to use prepaid as mentioned below. Unfortunately, the US carriers originally marketed prepaid as a last resort for the credit challenged. In a year or 2 prepaid, particularly unlimited will dominate in the US as consumers better understand the long term savings and control it provides.

  • Robinsun

So…do they let you bring in your own smartphone if you bought it separately? And will it be $50 straight with no extra fees? My contract’s been up for 2yrs now. Been thinking about going prepaid to save a lil cash.

    • http://twitter.com/WhyCantMyPhone Neal Elward

You better do something, as you’re throwing money away right now.

      • Robinsun

I just found out they had me on a contract this whole time!! I tried to upgrade 2yrs ago with the Env2, hated it, and returned it. I’ve been waiting for the “right phone” to come out all this time, thinking that when the phone was returned I was off contract. Not so. This is screwy. They better clear this up!

  • Mikeysams

Well if they can do it for prepaid. Why can’t they do it in the contract market?

  • http://twitter.com/thomroethke thomroethke

$50 for unlimited is what service should cost for any smartphone bought at full retail price.

  • DingleBerry

They should at least let you use the Motorola Citrus on the plan.

  • http://twitter.com/tn678 Tony

That Boost Mobile plan you refer to is actually $35 now, at least in Missouri. I just saw a commercial for it.

  • drew dogg

If ur on this website obviously this plan is not for you but VZW now gives option of $89 w/ contract for talk & text or $50 w/ no contract talk text & web. Great value for the consumer.

    • Anonymous

It’s no brainer, the pre-paid would be better at that cost.

  • Wojak138

If i could i could use my droid X or incredible on this plan i might switch from pageplus. But for now pageplus is still the best, you can use any Verizon phone(because it runs on Verizon network) and you get 1200 minutes, 2000 text and 100 MB data( data plan is very small but if you have WIFI all around you its OK and for only 29.95 can’t beat that.
And its only $29.95 no additional fees, taxes or other BS like regular Verizon my 69 a month plan was about 100 on the bill.

  • Betohatch

Can you use a Phone used for verizon wireless or does it have to be one of these 3 phones?

  • victor

its great the deal is that verizon is number 1 in coverage no one else comes even close now i get unlimited everything for 50 bucs thanks verizon

    • Kleekp

      da

  • Sebramlett503
