Gartner: Operating systems a $30.4B business in 2010

Software

Operating systems are big business. But just how big you ask? According to research firm Gartner, sales of server and desktop operating systems totalled nearly $30.4 billion in 2010 alone. “As the global economy recovered, worldwide operating system (OS) revenue totaled $30.4 billion in 2010, a 7.8 percent increase from 2009,” explains Gartner. “Among client OSs, Mac OS was the fastest-growing subsegment in 2010 as the unit shipments of Mac desktop/laptop devices saw strong sales, although from a much-smaller basis. Windows client was still the largest client OS segment, with high-single-digit growth, particularly driven by adoption of Windows 7 and the imminent end of life (EOL) of Windows XP.” Oracle saw the largest percentage-growth year-over-year thanks to its acquisition of Sun Microsystems. Analysts are expecting the operating system revenues to continue to rise in 2011.

I think the big pusher here is the adoption of Windows 7 in the corporate space. With IE 6 not being supported and Windows XP coming to the end of it’s life cycle, corporations saw the need to move to Windows 7. I think many corporations saw Vista and IE 7 as both inferior and prone to virus’.

Im not sure if the quote “Among client OSs, Mac OS was the fastest-growing subsegment in 2010″ is based on this chart or other information, but isn’t a 18% increase for Redhat bigger than a 15.8% for Apple? Is this chart that hard to read? Bias much?

The statistics say that Microsoft is No. 1 in OS. Way ahead of its competitors. The sale of operating systems will rise much faster as it is now being used in other gadgets too like mobile phones etc. Beware Microsoft!!!
