Android 2.3.4 rolling out in 'next few weeks', bringing video chat to Nexus S [video]

Breaking

Moments ago, Google announced it will begin pushing out Android 2.3.4 in the “next few weeks.” The company notes that the software will contain bug fixes for the Nexus One and, more excitingly, video chat capabilities for the Nexus S. “You can now video or voice chat with your friends, family and colleagues right from your Android phone, whether they’re on their compatible Android tablet or phone, or using Gmail with Google Talk on their computer,” reads the press release. “You can make calls over a 3G or 4G data network (if your carrier supports it) or over Wi-Fi.” A video demo of the new video chat feature is waiting for you after the break. Enjoy!

Hey, do you know any product that allows you to get a FULL experience anytime a new version comes out. By full I mean, you get to buy a brand new phone with exciting new bells and whistles. I am loving this and so is my CapitalOne Visa.

Good thing I can use my iPhone FFC! Well as long as I have WiFi and somebody else has the iphone.. That also happens to be in a WiFi area. And if I can manage making a call without it dropping or even connecting.. Also if iCan see anything with that .3 MP camera! Suck my balls android! iPhone rules! :D

Your phones won’t get the update because that’s how android rolls.

I’ve had video calling on my phones for years and not had the need to use it at all. I doubt this will change anything.

  • hehe

Here’s hoping they enable SIP over 3G in this next release.

  • Stan Winstone

Video calling is vastly overrated for those who’ve already had it for a while. Also who are they kidding with the simulated image quality in that still?

That’s some beautiful bokeh for a front facing smartphone camera. ha.

If memory serves me correctly, Google’s definition of “a few weeks” is actually “a few months”.

  • Johnathan

You can use this on 3G if your carrier allows it.

Video chat! Wow! Innovative! Just like on…wait…what’s that phone called…oh – just like the iPhone!

Hey Flipit, how’s the burger business going? I’m *still* waiting for my fries you fool!!! Let’s Moveit boy!

I believe though that Android had video chat and a FFC *before* the iPhone 4 came out with the EVO and QIK. And actually had video chat that wasn’t proprietary to the OS platform like Suck Jobs does with everything. Heck, imagine if voice calls were done by Jobs Inc….yeah, great platform.

I will agree with you that the EVO and the Qik did bring the FFC video calling to the main stream. However Nokia and WinMo had it long before Android was even popular.

Going great, thanks Stevie. You can now get two Android phones with every purchase of a Happy Meal. So have your mom drive you on down here (she still dives the Kia right?) and get yourself nice and Happy. We’ll be waiting, boy.

      An android.

My Nexus S just got the update … too bad I don’t know anyone with a Nexus S I can video chat with…

I assume r2doesinc will soon port this to the incredible, seeing as how he had a near flawless gb port within a month of its release. No ffc, but voice calls in gtalk will be killer to chat with friends overseas and not have to use Skype.
Does anyone actually make video calls? I have webcams on my desktop and laptop but have only made video calls a handful of times. Not to underestimate its importance for the deaf community though.

When is this hitting my Galaxy S? Y2013?
