The biggest threat to Apple is Google's Chrome OS?

Opinions

We’re not going to say this is the dumbest thing we’ve ever heard… but it’s certainly up there. The Street contributor Anton Wahlman has honed in on what he is calling “the biggest risk” to Apple’s stock price. This risk is so great, in fact, it surpasses the health of current CEO Steve Jobs on his list of concerns. It is even ranked higher than Google’s Android mobile operating system. This apocalyptic threat is… Google Chrome OS? In a three page exposé, Wahlman explains three ways the browser-as-an-OS will hurt Apple’s stock price. First, Chrome OS desktops and laptops will be released and priced between $150 and $300, which in turn will cause “consumers and enterprises” to “pick Chrome OS PCs over the much more expensive Apple PCs.” Second, Chrome OS will make its way onto tablets and “we could see unsubsidized 10-inch Chrome OS tablets selling for no more than $299, with perhaps $199 on the horizon.” Lastly, in 2012 or 2013, “Google will likely offer the Chrome OS architecture for smartphones.”  As John Gruber of Daring Fireball wrote, “Makes Me Wish I Still Did the ‘Jackass of the Week’ Bit.” We like when analysts think outside the box, but the threat vectors that Wahlman lists also seem to be detrimental to Android’s overall health as well — especially the tablet and smartphone predictions. Apple generated 50% of its Q2 revenue from the iPhone, if there is any threat to Apple’s business model we can assure you it’s Android, not Chrome OS. Regardless, we’re interested to know your thoughts. Do you think Chrome OS is a grave threat to Apple? Put on your monocle and thinking cap and drop us a comment with your musings.

I do not like the iPhone or Apple but Chrome OS currently is NOT a threat. It will, however, be a threat if the rumor is true that they merge Chrome OS with Android. That OS would be a show stopper and would Rival much that Apple has.

    Nonsense. Absolute nonsense.

The dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. It being priced $150-300, how does that even hurt Apple PC sales? Apple owns 90% of the high-end PC market. They are not even in the same class to have any effect, thats like saying netbooks and e-readers are going to crush Apple stock. And how does a Chrome OS tablet even make sense with Honeycomb? Because a Chrome OS tablet would be competing with Honeycomb, iPad and every other tablet.

It’s just another dumb article, I personally think Linux as an OS with Ubuntu has a greater threat.

You confuse expensive with high end. Apple does not make “high end” PC’s, they make expensive “pretty” PC’s.

I can spend half as much, build a rig that does more with better, well constructed parts.

Chrome OS isn’t a threat to anything.

I don’t think Chrome OS on it’s own is a threat, but let’s look history at what Apple’s business model has been:

    Computers w/
    iPods (super basic computers)
    iPhones (basic computers)
    iPads (slightly less basic computers)

While Google’s business model has consistently been to disrupt

    Chrome (accelerated web browers)
Android (made handsets cheaper. why buy an iPod when you can get an LG optimus off contract with a 3G radio for $150)
Chrome OS (will make laptops cheaper. will make the macbook pro and air look really over priced.)

I think the Motorola Atrix has shown us that the prospect of Chrome OS as a webtop OS embedded in your Android phone or tablet makes a laptop redundant for a lot of people, if it works in a performant way.

You might be able to say that it’s the biggest threat from a competitor? Bigger threats would be market forces that any sector or even the entire stock market is subject to.

And while something is the “biggest” threat, doesn’t mean it’s really a threat at all at this point. Which tells you something about the position Apple occupies in the market right now.

In other words, while I don’t necessarily agree with it, it isn’t as idiotic as the all the commentators and the author of this blog so arrogantly state.

Although I agree with him, I still think John Gruber should go fuck himself.

First of all I am a huge fan of Google and the way they do things. Android is a well done system although fragmented in its current state it has potential.

Chrome OS might have an initial hit on Apple but it will in the end fade just like a fad. Apple is a seasoned Company and has had its share of learning eexperiances in the years past. The reason Apple products are more expensive than any other PC brand is cause there products are well built and they don’t have many problems that can’t be fixed with a simple reboot. I have had a Macbook Aluminum for several years now and it has outlasted many of my friends PC laptops.
In the end I don’t think Chrome OS will be able to stand on it’s own.

Apparently, crack has made a resurgence on Wall Street.

as much as i hate apple, steve pretty much proved that if he shat on a plate, his cult will eat it like ambrosia

…. and Vegan Twinkies, for the fucking weird ass hipsters out there.

Any moron who feels there isn’t a market for both iOS and Android is just plain delusional. At this point thinking that anything is going to completely corner the market is just stupid. How could Android be a threat to Apple when there are so many Apple fanboys and vice versa. There is no way in the near future that one is going to win out over the other………

Remember the analyst who said that the iPhone wouldn’t amount to anything after a year or two? Put this analysis right next to that one.

I think people would have to actually use Chrome OS for it to be a threat.

  • DG

Its the dumbest thing I ever heard.

  • Matthew

No threat whatsoever, chrome is not even available to buy at a store. Why say or think it will be the biggest threat to apple. This article is confusing and doesn’t make sense the biggest threat to apple OS, is microsoft and we already knew that regarding computers. Apple has a head start in the tablet market and doesn’t have any trouble selling them. There are a couple of manufacturers that have made tablets in the market today and are competing with each other. Apple and other tablet makers sell their tablets pretty close to each other and many people would go for the hype or the trend of apple. Also most companies that make big profits tend to explore and research the next big thing to sell, so apple has no real big threat regarding tablets or selling music online.

I actually chuckled at this. Chrome’s OS look like it was designed in the early 1990′s. Very amateurish.

Wait, somebody outside of Google knows what Chrome OS is good for?

    Because I sure don’t.

  • Roland

if you talking about OS, don’t just drop Windows. I think for next 2 year step ahead, those three (microsoft, apple and google) will clash each other between mobile OS and PC OS. but Still Microsoft own gaming area!

  • Kent

forget Apple, what about microsoft, this destroys their whole business model, just as google destroyed microsoft’s business model in smartphones.

I’m a Cr48 pilot user and I’d say this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. After using ChromeOS as pretty much my mainstream computer, I have learned one thing: I’m just not ready for a browser-based OS. We need a desktop and more importantly, offline access. I cannot wait until I get my MacBook Pro so that I never have to use this things again. Great idea, but it’s simply too slow (currently) to have any advantage over ANY apple product.

  • http://profiles.google.com/snyderxc Nathan Snyder

This prediction is not outlandish, it’s just outlandish for the foreseeable future. As everything moves to the cloud and HTML5 (especially offline) gains momentum, I think Chrome OS (or something similar, Jolicloud, etc.) will take over.

  • Major Plonquer

Golly. Gosh! You mean Google (0% global market share) might take away Apple’s massive 2.6% global market share? How will we all cope?

  • http://profiles.google.com/ee2718 admin 1

Chrome OS is more of a threat to iPad and low end Windows PCs/notebooks than iPhone – at least until 5 to 10 years when WiMax networks becomes widely available, and we are all start using videophones instead or audio phones.

I can certainly see Chrome OS taking off for reliably connected semi-mobile WiFi tablets, desktops and notebooks, while Android will cater for fully mobile devices. It isn’t going to replace Windows or OSX, but in the long term, it certainly has the ability to turn them into a niche used for heavyweight applications.

It would at least possibly be the grave for Microsoft
