Sprint increasing total equipment protection plan to $8/mo

mobile

We’ve just been sent a tip that Sprint is going to be raising its popular total equipment protection plan to $8, up from $7, starting on June 24th. It’s probably not the end of the world considering TEP not only offers insurance against lost or damaged devices, but also includes a free app that will remotely find, lock, or wipe your handset.

smart move. they can cut down on the ebay’ers that sell off their “lost” devices on ebay and turn profits.

I hate to be the suckers that buy these phones now only to have it remotely wiped and locked..

my contract is up in October, if Sprint wants me, they’ll have to get the iphone. I don’t care for 4G right now. In 2012/2013 I will care about 4G and move to Verizon/Sprint. Right now I need an iphone that will have better battery life than my evo and it will not restart on its own twice a day(pos evo). Right now I want to keep my low cell phone plan but get the iphone on a one year contract. I love android but it still needs to mature. I’m going back to the dark side.

does at&t do 1-year contracts still? Verizon and Sprint don’t…

I spent a few bucks on an extended battery for my EVO – go from about 8:30am – midnight every day and still end with 15-20% battery still. Best investment ever for a smart phone.

I love my iMac and MacBook Pro’s but I can’t get myself to buy iOS… I like my Arrive better than iOS but still prefer Android…

If your EVO reboots twice a day, maybe you need to send it in on a TEP claim to get it replaced. Mine and several others don’t do such under normal usage conditions.

    • Ricky

I don’t have the greatest battery life but I’ve only had my Evo restart probably 4 times since launch day. You should probably get your phone looked at.

you are probably one of those “gotta have it now” whining people that b!tch complain and moan when they walk in my stores and have absolutely no idea what a “Gmail” account is. Go to AT&T and Verizon for your little iPhone and take the rest of the class of stupids with you. I’m sick and tired of all of you who don’t know your “Gmail” acct cause “I dont use it” well buddy I didnt ask if you don’t use it, but since you are stupid enough not to know what it is, i’ll trade you your Evo for a Sanyo 4700. You’d be better off.

I’ve had an iphone, Palm OS, WebOS phone, two android phones. I’m not an amateur. I said nothing about gmail so I’m not sure what you are talking about. If I switch back to the iphone, I will miss the Gmail app with the threaded email style.

I wouldn’t dare step into your store, half the reps I’ve talked to don’t know shit about phones.

Android is still not perfect, but its very powerful.

    Mobileme + Applecare = $134.50 per year

Sprint TEP = $96 per year

    • Anonymous

MobileMe is not an AppleCare prerequisite. If you eliminate its cost, the numbers would appear as follows (based on your own comment):

      AppleCare: $35.50

      Sprint TEP: $96

      • blainer617

TEP covers accidental damage and loss. With AppleCare, accidental damage coverage is a crapshoot at best and loss/stolen is DEFINITELY not covered. 60 a year for that assurance? Can’t complain too much IMHO

      • Anonymous

I don’t think anyone’s complaining. The point is, while one product may offer more features, it’s also more expensive. It’s not as if you’re getting something for nothing.

Remote device management, location, and wipe are included in Sprint’s
        TEP… Applecare, not so much.

      • IOS4EVER

Uh yes it is included with IOS 4.2 you can remote lock gps track and wipe device. You don’t even need apple care or mobile me it’s free.

I’d be surprised if sprint doesn’t get the iphone sometime this summer. Maybe the increase is due to the iphone being released in June.

My contract is up in July, so I’ll either get the iphone on sprint or bounce to Verizon when the iphone 5 comes out.

    • Dustin_d82

You’re gonna be suprised then. Sprint won’t get the iPhone. You can bet your a** that Apple is concentrating on LTE technology, since that’s what America’s true 4G networks will run on. WiMax had a very limited, if any future.

I hope that I can cancel my contract over this!!!

    • no stupid

      nope

Well that just broke the bank…

  • bobomb

Goddammit Sprint, stop raising rates on everything. I know its just a dollar but its also a trend. Grrrr….

    • Anonymous

Unfortunately pricing goes up. And its not just Sprint doing it.

I also heard a rumor that Sprint may cover Tablets with this insurance. That would be great.

    • user

Its not sprint its asurion. It is going up for Tmobile as well this summer.

  • http://nrbelex.com Brett

So does this mean you can lock in the $7/ month with a pre July-24 contract? Or all users, even those already on contract, will be getting hit?

    • http://profiles.google.com/cindyahampton CINDY HAMPTON

TEP is not part of your contractual agreement with sprint. Everyone rates will be going up. its a month to month.

      • http://nrbelex.com Brett

Unfortunate – Thanks for the info.

  • Igotmyselfagunnn

with all these increases I think its time to go to t-mobile. I was only with sprint because of the plan. But now t-mobile under cut them there is no need for me to stay.

    • http://twitter.com/transfat transfat

AT&T scares me away from T-Mobile. AT&T as possible future overlords does not paint me a pretty picture.

  • nebnostod

I suppose the Evo 3D is coming out July 25th?

  • Cer

So what has Sprint done over the past 6 months?

    1) Raised all data plans $10

    2) Changed Premier Plans and have taken away already accrued upgrades

    3) Raised the price of their phone insurance.

Way to act like the benevolent underdog, Sprint!

    • http://profiles.google.com/davesecx Dave Muscarella

      1) Not all data plans. Just on smart phone activations/upgrades.

      2) They are letting people who were eligible for the full grade before the new policy get upgrades now.

      3) Asurion is raising the rates, not Sprint per say. I am sure in a few years, it will go up again. That being said, TEP now includes a nifty TEP app for all Blackberry & Andriod phones which is new.

No one wants to pay more. I can understand that. But, the times are changing. Pricing will go up to reflect rising costs of doing business Sprint is a business like every other company. They aren’t doing this out of pure greed. Sprint stock holders will appreciate what they are doing.

      • Cer

You’re right on 1, but it’s essentially an irrelevant distinction. All
smartphone plans are now $10 more expensive.

Are you sure about 2? I was one of those people who had an upgrade. I had
many talks with CS reps online, and a long talk with a CS supervisor. All
were clear that my upgrade (which accrued in December 2010) would vanish on
April 1. I left Sprint on April 1.

      • fr3dd0

they had an extension that lasts until the end of the month. then if they had still been reset, they will stay reset.

also, if your 1yr UG is in december, your upgrade would have reset to october and i bet you could have called in september and had it bumped up a month. so you left for a 5 month wait on your upgrade?

where did you go and what phone?

      • Cer

I went to Verizon and got a TBolt on a 1 year contract. I wasn’t going to
wait until October or September, I had a TP2 and i had no interest in being
a part of a company that took away people’s upgrades. Oh, and the CS
supervisor told me he would waive the etf. Of course he lied and didn’t put
that in his call notes, which is another reason I’m happy to be leaving
        sprint.

    • Ricklerush

Smart phones were raised 10 dollars, not “data plans”

  • Anonymous

where exactly do i find this TEP app that locks, finds and wipes your phone? what’s it called? i can’t find it in the market place
