Google Docs standalone app for Android now available

mobile

Yes, we’re also tired of accessing Google’s mobile website to view our Google Docs on Android. That’s why we’re happy to report that Google has officially launched a standalone app for Android smartphones. Users can open attachments directly from GMail, share and filter docs, and upload new documents right from their Android phone. There’s also a homescreen widget for quickly opening starred documents, uploading photo, or creating new files. But here’s the real squeeze: the app uses optical character recognition (OCR) tech which allows you to snap photos of text to create editable documents — sorry Kinkos! Uploaded photos will be automatically convert to this format, too. Google says the only limitation is that it doesn’t recognize handwriting and “some fonts.” Google Docs for Android is available for Android 2.1+ phones in the Android Market now. Hit the jump for the QR code.

took Google this long to get an app for their own product on Android? Innovation!

How does that compare to the 2 years it took Apple to implement copy & paste into iOS.

      • Bringit

        This is worse.

I’m actually on an iphone now…so not really a fan of either…but to be fair. Apple doesnt have an app for the iPhone as of this day.
So who are we comparing google to?

Get a life… If you think this app was easy to make or is useless go back to playing Super Smash Bros

        @ Celzzzzz…

I know it is difficult for Android to “make” things (as opposed to borrow or steal). Life can be tough and not easy. My bad.

It took them this long because they were fine with just mobile and put this near the back of the list. Also, how long did it take apple to get multitasking?

      • Droidman101

Your apple got multitasking after multitasking on android was 2 years old, right after the Droid 1, Nexus 1 and Droid Incredible came out.

        hah. BURN.

      • BrownGuy

@bringit You act as if every app in the App Store is made by google…. they let all the devs do the work for them

      • Bringit

@ BrownGuy. Every apps in the App store are certainly not made by Google. Not sure where you got this information.

half of the pro-blackberry people here are RIM EMPLOYEES, they have an internal marketing team that post on bgr, engadget and youtube reviews.

you want real feedback, have a look at crackberry forums and notice the amount of negative reviews.

lol rim, we won’t see any updates maybe a white version and then playbook 2 which might actually be more than a glorified web browser (ring a bell, storm, storm 2, torch and now torch 2)

    gg rim.

Hmmm, OCR is a GDocs thing, not specific to Android phones, girth?

    • Droidman101

I’m not sure, but I think its specific to the android app
Don’t worry it’ll come to other platforms soon id think

Select Starred, Share, and I expect to be able to Share with anyone in my Google Contact list. All I get is the “group” that I currently share a doc with. I’d like to select from my entire Google Contacts?? There is no confirmation anything is sent to anyone.

OMG! Can’t even imagine this crappy app was release by Google! Where is quality?

    I’ll stick to Quick Office.

    • Droidman101

      Ummm, why is it crap?
I’m sorry I just haven’t found a problem with it yet.

what’s the launcher app for htc desire

  • John

There was already GDocs apps available, but this one is a bit nicer(and actually by google now). It’ll improve over time though. Btw, a link to the online app market would’ve been nicer than a qr code :P

I think it’s just right and makes more sense that Google decided to do it. After all, Android is a product of Google. But I heard that there are lost of improvements needed. Does anyone know if it’s true?

    • Droidman101

Works fine for me, not sure about others except
I’ve heard some complaints such as “why can’t you edit local documents?”
Which I agree is a valid point as you need an internet connection.
Overall, its pretty good, definitely faster than mobile site.
