Sharp selected by Apple as LCD manufacturer for iPhone 6, report suggests

iPhone 4GS and iPhone 5 rumors are so played out. Might as well move on to the iPhone 6, right? Blog AppleInsider is reporting that Apple, Inc. has selected Sharp Electronics as the display supplier for its next, next smartphone — being called the iPhone 6. The information comes courtesy of Japanese newspaper Nikkan, who writes that the purported agreement will have Sharp producing p-Si LCD displays for the iPhone maker — not OLED as previous rumors have suggested. The benefits of p-Si LCD displays include higher aperture ratios, better durability, and fewer connecting pins — the screens are also said to be thinner and lighter than the current LCD screen employed by the iPhone 4. The report states that the new screens will be made at Sharp’s “Kameyama Plant No. 1.” No word on the size or pixel density of the new screens, but just give it time… it is iPhone rumor season after all.

    How much does it cost to build an LCD factory?

    Clearly, almost every single product Apple will make for the rest of our lives will have an LCD panel… why don’t they take some of the $60 Billion warchest and invest in their own LCD plants?

    Even if they have Foxconn or whoever assemble their products… Apple could at least have their own endless supply of LCD panels.

      That is easy. People would balk if they built the plant anywhere but in the US (since they *are* a US company) and they can’t build it in the US because then they don’t get the cheap sweat shop labor.

        Last time I checked, Japan isn’t a cheap sweat shop labor country.

        And Apple would be wise not to build them, they have no expertise in manufacturing LCD panels. Just like Microsoft had no experience building game consoles, and it took them several years to figure that out at a staggering cost for replacements.

      Because developing real manufacturing experience takes years to do, and Apple simply doesn’t have that. It knows how to fill out a checklist of items and features, but actually developing and building product? Not so much…

    Of course, they had to get another LCD supplier, I doubt Samsung will provide them with anything at this point.

        That’s an unfounded rumour about LG providing Apple’s iPhone displays. Samsung does provide the video processor chip but, I doubt that partnership will continue, therefore, the likelihood of Samsung providing the display will also be an improbability. There is also a rumour that the display is manufactured by Sanyo, which is more in line with the quality, or lack thereof.
