U.S. retailers quickly sell out of ASUS Eee Pad Transformer stock

mobile

The ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, an Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet with a 10.1-inch screen and an optional QWERTY dock, made its U.S. retail debut today, and it’s flying off of store shelves. Amazon and Target appear to have already sold out of initial stock of the unit, and Best Buy’s website currently says that the $400 tablet is backordered, too. ASUS announced the Eee Pad Transformer late last month, and it’s equipped with a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, a 1.2-megapixel camera for video chat, a rear-facing 5-megapixel camera, and it’s rated for up to 9.5 hours of battery life. There’s no word on when U.S. stock will be replenished, although Best Buy’s “ship to store” option says the unit usually ships to the store within 3 to 5 days.

The Acer Iconia Touchbook also sold out…because they made 2k units. The bigger question is, how many did they ship?

  • Anonymous

Sold out of an initial stock of 4,500 units, according to Digitimes. Someone sucked up all the screen components, so Asus had to delay their limited launch.

    • Anonymous

Gee golly, I wonder who that could’ve been?

      • Anonymous

Who could it have been? Who knows. But ur momma sucked my far hairy veiny cock earlier.

I approve, but more stock is needed. ASUS = WIN.

Wait… Where are all of the Fandroids patting BGR on the back because this isn’t an Apple post? They confuse me…

    • Anonymous

Congratulations BGR on a non-crApple post!

      *Happy?*

Because this was just posted. And probably because most “Fandroids” are smart enough to ask the question “how many did they ship?” At least, that was my first question.

      • Anonymous

It’s a well known fact that their initial production was unusually low. Smart move on their part.

      • Anonymous

Yet those same “Fandroids” are not smart enough to ask how much money Android OEMs are actually making from Android’s tremendous market share. I guess their “smarts” come and go based on how much they really want to believe that Android is “winning” the smart phone battle.

I know that my DROID X’s LCD costs more to manufacture than that $28.50 Sanyo LCD on your iPhone 4.

You should really change your name to “priceless”, because you are just priceless!

      • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

You and the iPhone suck. Apple is dead in the water. And the eeeeeeeeeeee pad just decapitated the iPad. Sorry BRO.

      • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

Unless you are an investor, why should the average consumer care about how much money OEMs are making from Android?

      • Jaffrey W Ali

Android is only winning in data that extrapolates from small sample. Apple is winning when:

        1. App developers say how many apps they are selling

        2. Apple and Google report on apps downloaded.

        3. Companies report how many phones they sold

        4. Networks report how many phones they sold

Basically, when ever there is an actual number or $ Apple wins. When there’s % Apple loses. If those % are accurate why not also disclose the numbers behind the %? it’s because the numbers would be refuted.

      • Steve Hillshire

And why do you care so much *as a consumer* how much money any company is making off of Android? What is your infatuation with Apple making gobs of cash and everyone else just making a living? It only solidifies you pay Apple way too much money for what you get. Not a very savvy consumer to say the least….who’s not smart enough now?

    • Wally82

Because quite frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.

      :p

Did each Best Buy get like one tablet? I checked every BB within a 3 hour drive from my house and not one had any left. And that was only 30 minutes after the stores opened. Heck, I don’t think some of them even had one, because the employees I talked to didn’t know what the ASUS Transformer was.

    • Steve Hillshire

Who knows. There was an article saying they were sold out in other parts of the world as well and orders go into the 2nd and 3rd shipments. I’m more inclined to say there is a very limited number available. Though combine the $400 price point with an option to throw it in a laptop environment with Honeycomb and they’ve got a potential hot seller. Even the specs on it look great for $400.

    • Anonymous

You’re probably right, doubt all Best Buy stores had even one in stock.

    • RH

BB never heard of it because it didn’t have “eye” before the transformer name LOL

ASUS simply found that a great price with great specs and honeycomb all come together for a wining recipe. Good Job!

  • Generatione

    Take note Morotorla

    • Anonymous

Absolutely! If the Zoom was $400 they would be flying off the shelves. Then down the line when the Android tablet is more established, they could raise the price some.

  • Anonymous

Gotcha. ” flying off of store shelves”. That’s exactly the publicity they were looking for. There were none on the shelves to date and they won’t ship for months. Asus marketing plan.

  • ASUSanalyst

Guy at work brought one in. It’s okay but something about it felt kind of cheap. Spec wise the innards seem decent though.

The best thing going about this is the price which is sure to please the price conscious.

But selling out of 4,500 devices is nothing to brag about. It just means they didn’t make enough. The XOOM is considered a flop by some analysts and it sold between 100,000-200,000 but still well short of expectations.

  • Redell

Yeah I had one but returned it for my money. On paper everything seemed really good for the price. But mine kept over heating and noticed a lot of freeze ups and lags between screens

    • Scott

      Hi Motorola. ;)

  • http://www.bignerdblog.com BigNerd

My local BB had the 32geebees… but no demo unit.

I’d rather save the $100 and buy the 16geebees because I can microSD more memory for less and can use that to buy the keyboard.

Concerned about the size but since it Autobots into a netbook… it’s compelling.

I’ll check some other ones and see if they have the 16… good to see something other than iPad sold out.

Clearly the Transformer is going to be a popular Android tablet. It’s even got my interest. Hands on reviews from websites and actual users (youtube) have been positive and ASUS has a fairly good track record with their laptops in the past. Im not sure why they released so few units for their “big launch”? But it does make for a nice headline, hearing they sold out everywhere, even though the fine print says, “Each store received 2 tablets”. I’ll be watching to see how this tablet fairs as time goes on.
