Apple may refresh MacBook Air family in June

Rumor

Apple could begin manufacturing the next generation MacBook Air laptops in May, AppleInsider is reporting. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst with Concord Securities, said recent supplier checks have suggested that Apple will soon upgrade its MacBook Air family to include improved Intel graphics, Intel’s Sandy Bridge CPUs, and the new Thunderbolt I/O tech that made its debut in Apple’s recently refreshed MacBook Pro line. Apple will begin “mass production in late May,” Kuo said, adding that Apple could announce the next computers as soon as June. Apple last refreshed its MacBook Air notebook family on October 20th, 2010.

Thunderbolt is much anticipated. The new processors should be insansely fast, as the Air is already real-world crazy speedy.

Couldn’t come at a better time. I’ve been waiting for the newer < 1" laptops to come out. So far Asus and Lenovo caught my attention but knew if there was a Sandy Bridge MacBook Air I would consider it. Cant wait.

Wish List: 14" ultra slim without a ROM drive.

Thunderbolt is even better than having eSATA. It will allow you to connect an ultra portable to work station dock, i.e. monitor, external HDD, etc. all daisy chained together, all running ridiculous speeds.

External HDDs will run as fast as having it internal. It allows you to limit the internal capacity to just what you need on the go, and then have a work station at home.

I’m more looking forward to a Mac Mini with Thunderbolt for a small business server.

My fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) tell me that Macbook Airs, like the rest of the Apple “computers” are not real computers. So, PASS!

Actually, I am a Goofan and I love my Droid X (got Apex Gingerbread ROM running on it) and I couldn’t be happier, but I LOVE my current MacBook Air. It’s a magnificent piece of kit and I couldn’t be happier with it. :)

Oh, then, that’s good then. Do you think I will get my fingers burned if I touch it? My other fellow Goofans (aka Apple Haters) tell me that if I touch an Apple product, my skin will burn, lose my intellectual power and I will turn gay automatically. So is that false???

you are not funny in the least

Dear Dumpman! I am a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and as such have little or no sense of humor especially when it’s regarding Apple and it’s crappy products! So thanks for the complement!

      • Boodah

        @bd7349 – 2 out of 3 ain’t bad. Keep it up.

      • RIMsucks

Then you are not a true Goofan. All apple products are inferior no matter what it is.

      • Anonymous

Amen to that… As long as it has the Apple logo on it, we know it’s inferior to ANYTHING out there, no matter from where. Apple has a team of people that look all over for the lowest quality products and aim below.

I just bought a new MacBook air last November. I’m going to be really pisses if they have a new one coming out w a faster processor. I can live w/o thunderbolt and graphics and shit. But I would want that speed.

It’s just too soon to refresh the line. Very year on a $300 iPhone? No prob. But on a $1700 computer? No way. Need a little more shelf life before a new version comes out. Can’t shell out that kind of dough on reg.

Welcome to the world of technology.

This makes about as much sense as someone complaining that new car models come out every year and cars cost a hell of a lot more than computers.

      • Jnh

Car models don’t get that much of a makeover from year to year. A car company will keep a model virtually the same for 5-7 years. Most often, the changes just come in the form of some sort of aesthetic change. They’ll change the shaping of the lights slightly or something like that. They don’t add bigger engines or revamp the computer system. The changes are so small and incremental that your analogy doesn’t hold water.

That was kind of my point. They don’t really make any real changes but can somehow justify putting a “new” model out every year. With technology, there are real advances happening all the time and technology companies need to keep pace with these changes or else they’ll be left behind.

It’s nice that you were ready for a new laptop last november and got one when you did, but if I’m due for a new laptop in a few months should my options be limited to a slower model just so the people who bought one in the fall wont have their feeling hurt? No I should have the latest technology available to me, because otherwise I might get one from Dell or HP.

You are basically complaining because Apple didn’t hold off upgrading their products until you were ready to buy a new one which is kind of silly. I guess going forward you should email Steve Jobs ahead of time so such a travesty can be averted.

      • Jnh

        Matt

My point was that Apple was already working on this technology when the MBA refresh came out last fall. So, they just should have waited to release it all together on one machine. It is unfair to the consumer to hold back on technology upgrades just b/c you want to get back into their pockets in six months. It’s just the same as when a company makes a product that is designed to last only a few years to force you to come back for a replacement. TVs are a perfect example. TVs from 20 years back and more still work to this very day b/c they were made to last. Now, TVs are made to break down after 4 or 5 years. I’m not saying that they shouldn’t be allowed to do it, just that they shouldn’t do it.

You obviously don’t know much about cars then, companies refresh the ecu/tcu programs all the time, they just don’t necessarily advertise that fact unless it’s for “safety” reasons.

      • John

agreed! i don’t know whats wrong with some people. some think as soon as they buy something then the whole world tech has to stop making anything until they are ready for their next purchase lol thats not how todays tech works!

they don’t realize by the time they get the product the next cycle is already in their finishing development and getting ready for the year after!

    • Are you kidding???

      What a moronic rant.

EVERY SINGLE computer manufacturer does this.

      • Jnh

That’s not even a true statement if you were even just talking about Apple. They haven’t shown at anytime in history a pattern of refreshing a computer line 5 or 6 months after the latest version. You have no idea what you are talking about.

      • Dave

Dude! why are you worried about what other people might get? the company can’t stop producing for you because you bought MBA 6 month ago! if they come out with a new one you don’t have to buy it! you can always wait for the year after and get a better one than the one from the year before it. not matter if you buy it this year or next year there will be always a newer better one coming after it. if you want the latest and greatest every single year then you gotta pay for it! other than that zip it and don’t get jealous because someone might buy one 7 month later than you did and get a better/faster product!

thats how todays tech works if you were absent past few years!

    • Goober

Tech is outdated within days of it reaching the marketplace, if not before. Deal with it.

Besides, people don’t really need the “latest/greatest” so products being updated every 6months or so aren’t a big deal, unless you’re an immature “fanboi”

So they stretch out the iPhone’s release but compress the MBA’s?

I hope they bring the lighted keyboard back… and maybe some 1920×1200 (yes 12fracking00!) into a 15″ MBA.

Can it get any thinner? It’s like a skinny war between Samsung and Apple… iPad 2, meet new Galaxy Tab 10.1 and 8.9… iPhone 4, meet Galaxy S II… MacBookAir, meet Series 9… fight!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BHMB52ZFMATI5KS7D4JT6UU7NA Eric W

What’s even cooler than a lighted keyboard is actually learning how to type. You can probably learn in a few weeks and you won’t have to waste battery life on a keyboard. You will also be able to look at what you are typing while you are typing it, so you’ll notice most mistakes as they happen.

      • http://www.bignerdblog.com BigNerd

You’re right… because the the best typists NEVER look at the keyboard.

I just want a lighted keyboard because it’s cool… just like the glowing apple on the back of the lid,

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BHMB52ZFMATI5KS7D4JT6UU7NA Eric W

That’s correct…I am not the fastest typist in the world, but I never look at the keyboard. There is a thing called “home row” and you can feel it…no need to look.

      • http://www.bignerdblog.com BigNerd

        @Eric W:

“I never look at the keyboard.”

You must only use letters, numbers and common punctuation. As a BigNerd, I use a lot of shifted characters due to coding and I also use the F1-F12 row.

I don’t know many people who’ve memorized what the shifted keys are.

Try typing *$<~^_|}<# without looking at your keyboard.

    • Wrong.

The backlit keyboard never went away.

What in the world are you talking about???

      • http://www.bignerdblog.com BigNerd

        Dang.

I need to send my 2010 13″ MBA in for repair… the keyboard light must be broken.

      • Jnh

Uh, it definitely went away. I’m typing on a non-backlit MBA keyboard right now. You are clueless.

When do you think the new Macbooks will come out?

More time spent on reliability engineering is necessary. The continual hardware problems are frustrating and annoying. (MacBook Air owner + I Book and Power Book)
