Samsung responds to Apple with multiple patent suits

Legal

It didn’t take a crystal ball to see this move coming — Samsung on Friday filed multiple patent infringement suits against Apple. Just four days following Apple’s filing of a lawsuit alleging Samsung smartphones like the Galaxy S “copy Apple’s technology, user interface and innovative style,” Samsung has filed three separate suits alleging infringement of a total of ten patents. The suits were filed in Seoul Central District Court, Korea; Tokyo, Japan; and in Manheim, Germany. In a statement, Samsung said it is “responding actively to the legal action taken against us in order to protect our intellectual property and to ensure our continued innovation and growth in the mobile communications business.” Ebb and flow… yin and yang… suits and countersuits.

That pic is wrong. The F700 was introduced in Feb. 2007, after the iPhone. It was then released in Nov. 2007. Either way, the F700 actually proves Apple’s case: Samsung had their own platform and design, and should not have started copying Apple.

Why didn’t Samsung keep using the platform/design of the F700? Why did they change the icons to almost exact replicas of Apple’s icons? Why did they get rid of the QWERTY keyboard of the F700?

      USE FACTS.

Don’t get so defensive (testy, testy, testicals).

Just have another Snickers and calm down, we all know Apple “borrows” and then claims Intellectual Property rights.

The Samsung S5830 (next Galaxy S phone) just happens to look like ? ??

The iPhone was revealed about a month before the F700. Do you really think they could have designed and implemented and tested that UI at Samsung in a matter of weeks?

The idea of a dockbar and lots of icons is something inherent to all computers in some fashion. Neither company infringed on each other; if anything, they infringed on Microsoft Windows 95. Why isn’t Bill Gates suing? Because every damn computer works this way today and most are moving away from it towards widgets and other dynamic content. In fact, this icon-heavy UI is a bad thing because it is so much less intuitive to a user on the go. Users desire and seek out boatloads of information quickly and immediately.

Information should be readily available before you need to even touch your screen once. Do you open up an app to see the time? No, you have the time in the top bar and/or in an on-screen, constantly updating widget. Why shouldn’t weather be treated the same? Latest news headlines? Local traffic situation information? Task lists and scheduled events?

The Android notification panel and Android/WP7 widgets exist to provide all of this to the user without any interaction delaying this information from displaying on the screen. So, why are we arguing about an antiquated icon-heavy UI, where half of the icons tend to be “My Computer (X)” because the user keeps losing track of his/her shortcuts?

Sure they could have! As crapy as the phone was, not too hard. BTW, it did not take Sammy long to respond to the iPad2 with it’s new thinness and spec bump. Plus my theory is the Asian market has a VERY close eye on companies like Apple and since the manufacturing is done in the Asian market, I am sure Sammy knew a lot more about the original iPhone than we may think otherwise.

Thats really not a copy. Plus, Apple has SHORTCUTS at the bottom, while samsung has functions at the bottom. Big difference. Samsung has black and white (not square) icons and apple has colorful square ones. This is not a copy just similar arrangement. Put TouchWiz UI next to iPhone and its damn near the same.

      • kRUSE

i would think its a natural grown as screens got smaller and cheeper and better quality to move to full color screen, and eliminate the keyboard when you have a touch screen that works well. to me is just looks like touchwiz has evolved from the older styles they had

If Samsung would have stopped trying to focus so much on that wack TouchWiz, then they wouldnt be in this mess. They arent suing samsung because they have Android, it’s because of the UI they put on top of it that makes it look just like iPhone. Samsung should have worried more about how they can set themselves apart in the hardware department vs the UI department.

    • KCRic

Samsung is in a mess? Hahaha!!

Who supplies almost everything for all of Apples products? Tick-tock mutha fucka, tick-tock….

      • Anonymous

Yes, Samsung supplies almost everything for Apple HOWEVER, Apple did pay 5.7 BILLION to Samsung for those parts…. so what they gunna do??? Refuse service to Apple and lose 5.7 Billion in business? Think wisely. That’s why Apple has the balls to even pull this stunt because they give Samsung some serious business.

      • http://profiles.google.com/harold.spam Harold MAM

Think that chip/screen manufacturing capacity is going away when Apple does? Why don’t you think wisely? There are plenty of phone manufacturers looking to leverage Samsung’s capabilities. $5.7 billion from 5 different companies is the same as $5.7 billion from just one.

      • Anonymous

        @ Harold MAM…..
I never said that manufacturing capacity would go away. I was responding to KCRic who seems to think that Samsung is not in a mess. Since you failed to understand what I was saying, I will say it more simply. I seriously doubt that Samsung will stop doing business with Apple because they do bring a lot of profit to Samsung. Apple is bold for biting the hand that feeds it but they know that they can do it because they do give so much money to Samsung and Samsung would not want to lose that revenue. YES other manufacturers could be looking to buy, but NO MANUFACTURER sells more phones than Apple. That is just one client and those other manufacturers still have the opportunity to purchase from Samsung even while they supply to Apple. $5.7 billion loss from Apple would hurt a little. This will more than likely end with some kind of deal that benefits both sides.

Idk man…I’d say sammy’s pretty well off. Galaxy line sales are through the roof and have been for a while.

      • Anonymous

Yea they are doing well but “Weller” is always better LOL

  • serpentor

I wish Apple would just stop wasting everyone’s time. I doubt they lost any sales because someone mistook a sammy for an iphone.

And Sammy was retarded for copying a sh!tty iOS UI anyway. Going with stock Android would’ve been an improvement.

    • Anonymous

How is Apple wasting everyone’s time? Nobody is forcing you to read about this. They have patents and trademarks and feel they have a case to defend them. It’s business. It’s the various tech blogs that make it into a media circus.

      • Roguefromnyc

And no one forced u to respond to someone s comments. Why does it bother u that people leave there comments about somthjng they don’t agree with. Just cause u do don’t ask people to not read something.. do urself the favor and just read the topic and skip comments. I like reading comments to see other people’s opinions but it seems to bother u so move it along.

      • Anonymous

Did you actually read my comment before launching into righteous indignation? I wanted to know why he thought Apple was specifically wasting everyone’s time. It’s a valid question. Unless you’re a part of the court case itself, it’s entirely opt-in if Apple is wasting your time.

    • Anonymous

      +1 @ sh!tty iOS UI

They are losing sales to ANDROID in general… i doubt the UI had anything to do with that lol.

But also glad Samsung is suing Apple back. :D YAY SAMSUNG!

  • Derp Mcghurt

Samsung copied the iphone? Does the iphone gps suck balls too?

  • Elmorro

Gotta hate Apple. Has me actually rooting for a foreign company instead of an amercian, on top of that one which makes products I generally don’t care about.
American arrogance. No wonder the world hates us. :/
