Ovi Maps, Nokia-branded app store coming to Windows Phone

mobile

In a recent blog post, Nokia reaffirmed its commitment to the Windows Phone ecosystem by offering us a glimpse at what is to come. The company’s CEO, Stephen Elop, has noted that Nokia has “shifted from a mode of developing” its strategy to one of “putting that strategy into action.” Part of the Finnish phone giants plans involve bringing some of Nokia’s strengths to all members of the Windows Phone family, and one of the most exciting Symbian ports will definitely be Ovi Maps. “Nokia will supply mapping and location-based services for the Windows Phone ecosystem, building on the success it’s experienced with Ovi Maps,” reads the blog post. The company also notes that a “Nokia-branded  application store” will be present on the company’s Windows Phone hardware. The CEO also went on to say that Nokia is hard at work in the hardware department, and quipped that his company would “define some of the future disruptions in our market.”

Ovi Maps is a HUGE plus for WM7. Hopefully they don’t charge for it.

It will not cost extra. It will be integrated with the phone as part of their mapping system.

Nokia owns NAVTEQ. NAVTEQ powers Bing. It’s going to be NAVTEQ in the end.

Nokia has the potential to make or break Windows Phone 7. I have a strong feeling that they will be the reason it succeeds. Look at what they have been able to accomplish with Symbian based smartphones. Now, add an OS that is current and has a great deal of potential (and greater stability than Symbian) and I think they will do something really significant.

Ovi Maps and quality hardware are the two things WP7 needs ASAP. I love love love my HD7, but build quality is way sub-par and Bing Maps is just not good.

So other than the lost luggage and the fiery plane crash, your flight was fine, eh?

Ovi Maps has always been free on any device thats its come on. Just like Bing Maps. I wonder if the it will be called Bing Maps like on every other phone or something new like Ovi Maps, or NAVTEQ as Techman suggested. No matter whats called though it will be a huge win for WP7.
