Nintendo Wii 2 'Screen Stream' controllers leak

Gaming

Nintendo’s next generation Wii console — currently codenamed “Project Cafe” — could land later this year, and it may sport a new controller with a touchscreen display. A user in the NeoGaf forums has posted several images that provide additional details on Nintendo’s rumored system. According to the photos, “Screen Stream takes the 1080p image and pushes each rendered quarter to the player’s personal TV screen,” which is on the controller itself. So if you’re partaking in a four-player game, for example, you’ll be able to view your slice of the HDTV screen directly on your controller. Similarly, we imagine instances where a gamer could manage his or her character’s traits or abilities directly from the controller itself, without having to pause the game for everyone to access game menu options. IGN says the Nintendo Wii 2 will likely cost between $350 and $400, will offer 1080p output with possible support for stereoscopic 3D, and will run a newer version of AMD’s R700 GPU. Not buying another Nintendo console, it doesn’t take 5+ years to make a sequel to Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Go die in a fire Nintendo.

good point. not only that, but hat game was known to have disc reading issues. i’m not buying a nintendo system for along time. i bought the wii. what a waste, though fun at first. plus, how much are controllers with a screen on them going to cost when a wiggly stick with basic motions costs as much as it does. not in this economy.

I’d much rather them take 5+ years and get it right then release 15 of the same game in 3 years (COUGH GUITAR HERO COUGH)…..Blizzard took over a decade to release the newest Starcraft, and thank god they did.

During the lead-up to the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it was officially announced that there were no plans for a game to follow up Brawl, that it would be the end of the series. As of right now, I have still yet to hear of any planned sequel. Furthermore, the other games in the series also had a long time between their releases, and there has been one Smash Bros. per Nintendo home console since Nintendo 64.

This is pretty awesome! especially if the screens on the controllers will be touch screen. Glad to hear that it will support 1080p output and 3D. I think the whole idea of being able to manage your own settings and what not via the controller without interrupting everyone else is pretty cool. They may even have the ability to have people playing different games at once? Maybe 2 people can be playing golf using their own controller screen and another 2 people bowling on their own screens!??? just a thought, cant wait for the official launch!

I think the whole point of games like these is to look at a big screen, or you could just play multiplayer games on an iPod touch. Accessing settings and stats such as kill count and what buttons do what and current weapon stats would be cool to have on a remote control, though.

However, if this console supports live streaming, and apparently does, each controller could become a portable console.

Thats the beauty of options you can always pretend option 2 doesnt exist..

I remember picking plays on NFL2K on the Sega Dreamcast’s VMU….oh how I miss thee. Looks good anyway, and I can hear Sony saying we’ve been doing this with the PSP LOOOONG time ago now we’ll do it again with RIIIIiiiiIIIIDGE RACER! :]

And I thought extra / replacement controllers on today’s systems were expensive. I can wait to see what these are, but the concept just isn’t screaming $50 apiece here.

    • Anonymous

      $100+

If the specs on those slides are true, this is brilliant. Ignoring the peripherals, Wii 2 is basically an Xbox 360 with beefed up CPU and GPU (and presumably memory). That means everyone already knows how to program these and there are tons of dev tools Wii 2 ready with only minimal tweaks.

Note the line in one of those leaked slides where they’re bragging about how easy it is to port from PC/X360 to Project Cafe. With good reason.

My question is, why would I pay $50 – $100 more for a console that will likely run a bunch of games ported from a console I already own?

For Nintendo’s/Miyamoto’s first person exclusives. That’s how it always is, right? :)

If Metroid/Zelda/Mario don’t do it for you then yeah, forget it.

This is f-ing awesome news! Hoping this will come out this year, if not first half of 2012

After wasting money on the gimmick that’s is wii. I wouldn’t even consider another nintendo gimmick

    • http://twitter.com/5murfette Mr Smurf

      yet, you’ll buy it anyway…

    • Anonymous

how is wii a gimick Nintendo said here is our motion based console.. And that’s what it is, it was never marketed or purported to be anything else.. And it does a great job at it.. If you expected somthing different thats your fault.. Ive been using Nintendo since NES and I love how they continually innovate and change the game but the wii is the only Nintendo console I didn’t buy

    • Wud_e

Gimmick? Is that the best you got? 6 Axis is a gimmick.

      • Paladinrja

Yah no shit, got the 80 gig PS3 after the Wii (which I got month one), hardly touched the console for weeks because the games were just crap (better versions on the Wii despite the lack of HDMI). As for 6 axis? to date I  haven’t found a use for it, apart from Lair, which was designed for it and impossible to play with it. 6 axis is irrelivant.

    OOOOOH YEAH!

  • Justjunk

I don’t care what Nintendo gimmicks there are. As long as they keep releasing good Mario and Zelda games.

  • Justjunk

Actually it would be better if Nintendo went the Sega route and just made games. I’m fine with playing Mario and Zelda on an xbox or playstation, as long as they’re still good games. But we all saw what happened to Sonic.

  • Matthew

they are going to have to have some hot games lined up for wii 2, i wonder what is going to be their first game.

    FAKE.

Easy portabilty from PC, Xbox 360? And why would anyone just port a current-gen game to a next-gen console? Unless it offers a radically better experience, I’d rather buy a by-then cheaper Xbox 360 and the ported game.

  • Anonymous

When they mention “easy portability between PC and XBox 360 it seems like Nintendo is finally expanding to no longer be the “kiddie console” like the previous 2 generations of its hardware. I’m really stoked on this.

  • Erod

The post release updates for games feature is getting me excited.

    Cool! VMU 2.0!

  • http://twitter.com/Dhowayan Dhowayan (Abu Yara)

    those controllers remind me Sega’s Dreamcast…. :)

  • Zagg1981

I think these controller will have 3d screens like the 3ds that’s the whole concept. Nintendo knows that not every one can afford a 60inch 3d flat screen. That’s the reason why the screen is on the controller. Meaning nintendo is focusing on 3d gaming not motion controlling, but motion might be included.

    • Snake

       bull crap that’s a lie

  • Bradley Horsley

I Think the wii 2 will have motion control like xbox kinnect plus a controller

  • Negronantonio

if i did for whatever reason decided to buy this, it would take me a while to do so. The wii proved to be a huge disappointment with the exception of mario kart wii, super smash bros brawl, and resident evil 4. I’ll keep an open mind when it is actually available, but I’d most likely wait to see what others think about it and what kind of games come out before I actually consider buying it.

  • Blackyousa

I wonder if by porting to PC they mean actual PC games instead of just
the SDK. Some Valve games would be hella fun to play on a big screen
without having to pay the cost of a new game each year to use it’s
    multiplayer, and have updates.
