Google: Android location tracking is opt-in

mobile

Let all those questioning their open-source smartphone overlord be silent. Responding to the recent ruckus caused by an O’Reilly article and subsequent report by The Wall Street Journal, Google has let it be known that it is not tracking your location… unless you give it permission. In a statement to blog TechCrunch, Google writes:

All location sharing on Android is opt-in by the user. We provide users with notice and control over the collection, sharing and use of location in order to provide a better mobile experience on Android devices. Any location data that is sent back to Google location servers is anonymized and is not tied or traceable to a specific user.

The Wall Street Journal called in to question the notion that data sent to Google was, in fact, anonymous. Google addressed this claim, stating that when users opt-in to the service data is often linked with a phone’s unique identifier . The unique identifier is not, however, then partnered with a phone number, serial number, name, or email address — making it difficult for Google to associate the location information with a specific user. Apple has yet to issue a statement about the utility of its gathered location data.

As always when something bad is going on at Apple, people start pointing fingers or trying to find out dirt on other companies like google or samsung so they can say “Its not just Apple, its everyone else too.” Grow some veins on ur apple tree b/c its loosing its ground…..losers.

    • Anonymous

      Umm, Lance, a few comments.

      One, it’s “losing,” not “loosing.”

Two, people do the exact same thing when Google gets hit on something.

Three, your comment suggests you really aren’t smart enough to be calling anyone else a “loser” (though the fact you managed to spell “loser” correctly is somewhat encouraging).

I’m curious.. What kind of phone do you have?

      • Jroc869

what ever kind of phone apple tells him to use

      • Hamdroid222

@Jroc869 I guess you own an “open” like what google tells u. The answer to live mystery. OPEN = giving all your data to china.

You didn’t mention profits? How odd…. That is your normal gumpf.

Here: “Apple commands the most profits over all other smart phone manufacturers and is not willing to contribute to any race to the bottom. But they can haz my location history for free. It contributes to the greater good.”

Now I feel warm and fuzzy Perspectively.

    this is odd….

    Google gives you a choice?!?!

Ah. It’s funny, but as I recall, when Google’s street view cars were swiping passwords and e-mail, those users weren’t offered a “choice.” But I guess that’s okay, since it’s Google.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GP2WYAHXS6CRUREISWBGPUSUGE Michael

Google did this to people who open Wi-Fi networks they cannot steal encryption keys just by driving down the street. In that regards Google “attacked” people who unknowing didn’t protect themselves. Apple is doing this to EVERYONE. Even if you are trying to protect your self.

So is exploiting an open hole worse? or forcing protocols on people worse?

Google’s exploiting people Wi-Fi is the exact reason my SSID is not air… don’t know the name, a little harder to find. I know it’s not fool proof but it protects n3wbs from doing any damage.

actually they had a choice the whole time. Its called password protecting you wireless connection. google only collecedt info any other regular human being could have from an unlocked connection

OK whenever there is a valid concern with a issue in Android the number one excuse I hear is “It’s no problem a simple root fixes that issue”

It is not a problem a simple jailbreak fixes this issue.

    Android for the win.

  • http://twitter.com/gbhil Jerry Hildenbrand

And only keeps the last few entries for use when/if a data signal is lost and location can’t be updated, unlike that other issue with that other operating system.

    This never was news.

      Jerry my man! :)

    The way it should be.

Nice of Google to supply official word so shortly after scrutiny. Where is Apples official response?

They’re still talking with their lawyers to come up with one that won’t get them sued.

What is it do you think? Owner error or:

“Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the amount of location history we were storing to triangulate a users location is totally wrong.”?

      • Anonymous

I think it’s going to be ‘You’re using it wrong’. haha

    And cue the Apple Fanboys:

anyone else surprised that BGR even published this post? Defending Android, shame, shame BGR…Apple isn’t gonna like this.

  • http://profiles.google.com/rbarry55j Rich Barry

This statement by Google is disingenuous. The whole truth is you can decline to share data with Papa Google but the app won’t run if you decline to share. For instance to use Google Maps, you need Google’s location service enabled. To enable location services you have to “agree” to share your data. If you don’t then location services shuts down and Google Maps won’t run. That is no choice at all. With my BB Storm once an app was installed there was a way to fine tune permissions it granted itself. The user could remove what the app took at installation. No such luck in Android. You are forced to “accept” their privacy demands in exchange for using the product.

    • Hapki5000

Dude what the fuck are you talking about?! Google maps runs without that.

    • Anonymous

Incorrect. If you opt-out of using location services, Google Maps still works, it just won’t be able to provide your current location, but you can otherwise scan maps, search for locations, get directions, etc. Did you even try to test your claim before you rushed in to accuse Google of being disingenuous?

      • http://profiles.google.com/rbarry55j Rich Barry

On Thunderbolt, the mapping doesn’t work nor does any part of the navigation. Not until the Google location services is enabled.

      • Anonymous

Then you are referring to something other than stock Android and the stock Google Maps app. If you download the actual Google Maps app from the Android Market, you can use the app without having locations services activated.

The statement Google made isn’t meant to be applied to every 3rd party app out there, just to the stock Android OS they provide and the accompanying 1st party apps from them.

  • http://www.inewsupdates.com i News Updates

    i opted out ages ago.

  • Anonymous

Sure it’s opt-in but you can’t use the location service without opt-ing in. It’s like saying sure you can drink anything you want as long as it’s Coke.

  • 1T2dirtnap

Some people are so, well how should I say it, thickheaded! This doesn’t stop Google from knowing the location of your device. It just tells them you don’t want them to collection anonymous data from your device or to use Google location services which are found in Maps, Latitudes, Google Search’s or anything else Google. Apple is tracking iOS devices through cell tower triangulation. Why they’re doing it isn’t truly unknown. You may also want to check ever single app you installed to your device because many of them will require locations services when you agreed to install their app.

    • Dario69

I think you and Rich Barry are the only ones that get this. Both Apple and Android camps appear in denial with just a few level headed folks stating the obvious. Apple screwed up big time and Google doesn’t want this is to go any further because then it exposes the whole ugliness of data mining and when free really doesn’t really mean free.

Sure you get these great apps and yes you can opt out but good luck getting certain features to work. Oh, I guess you need to opt in to get the full set of features. But don’t worry, I am sure your data is well protected and kept from others.

If I had to choose between Apple’s stupid lack of encryption and Google storing the same data (or more) on their side of fence I think I would choose the former. Who knows what Google does with this stuff. Now if Apple does actually get this data then all bets are off. They both suck in that case.

And before the fanboys get their knickers in a knot think about Google search. You don’t think that data isn’t being stored with your i.p. address or phone id? Of course your name or or personal data is not factored in but come on – this stuff is like your digital fingerprint regardless. Think about that the next time you use Google search, or Bing for that matter. Privacy is gone. Whatever privacy you think you have went away a long time ago when we stopped using dumb phones and picked up phone data plans.

I still chuckle when I read these posts from Android users that think they have privacy. We have all forfeited our privacy the moment we started using these phones. It doesn’t matter what type of phone you have. Get over it.

      • DonnyMilkSteak

You guys are both right but you’re stating the obvious at the same time.. I would have to assume that most people that are posting on this board know that Verizon or ATT have all of our locations for the life of our contracts. Kinda scary. But that’s not when we’re talking about.

We know that apps have our location data. Android users give them permission when they’re installed. That is not news. That’s not what we’re talking about.

Google specifically said, “Any location data that is sent back to Google location servers is anonymized and is not tied or traceable to a specific user.” Do I believe them ? Probably not. Is our location data safe with them? As of right now, yes. That’s the issue at hand.

iPhone location data is wide open for everyone to see, even between all their iOS 4 devices. That’s the problem. Apple will patch the issue pretty soon. and it will function probably the exact same way as Android does now, maybe even better. After that, everyone will forget all about it and buy their white iP4 and their iP5s when they come out.

We all know that privacy is gone, thanks.

      • 1T2dirtnap

Well said. Though the everyone to see part is still unclear, it’s clear you know what you’re talking about.

      • 1T2dirtnap

You said exactly what I was trying to say. I was just tried and didn’t want to explain it anymore. All these users who think by unchecking two boxes will suddenly make you invisible is just rediculous. Even Microsoft track its Windows mobile users. We gave up this right a long time ago, once you activate your phone you agree to their terms. If you’re using any app which displays ad’s trust me Google or who ever is tracking it. Look at my other post I explained the IP part even your unique MAC identifier.

    WSJ is going downhill..

  • Jroc869

@hamdroid hell yeah i own and Android device. I dont however think my phone is the end all be all of phones. I love the competition right now because all consumers win. What I dont like about apple is what pussies they are. apple is that kid that takes their ball home when their little feelings get hurt. they like to drag others down in their misfortune and misery. im going to say this next part in all caps so there is no confusion. I AM NOT SAYING THIS SITUATION IS ONE WHERE APPLE HAS ACTED CHILDISHLY. IM JUST STATING ONE OF THE MANY REASONS WHY I DONT SUPPORT ANY APPLE PRODOCTS

  • http://www.briefmobile.com Korey Nicholson

The guy who made the Location Cache app for the Android devices says the only way to access the file is root access, and if you opted out of the location service it doesn’t collect any data at all.
