The iPhone is for the birds

Gaming

iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users have a sick obsession. No, not their tendency to adore their iOS devices a bit more than might be considered healthy — they love birds. Right now, the top five paid apps in Apple’s App Store all revolve around fat little birds being hurled across the screen. Some are being thrown at things and others try to avoid things, but all of them have one thing in common beyond the fact that they’re fowl: these games are as casual as casual games can be. As companies begin to focus on more immersive mobile gaming, one can’t help but wonder if the bulk of mobile gamers are ready for the transition to a more sophisticated brand of gaming. It could just be that they’re happier watching birds glide across the screen atop different backgrounds over, and over, and over again.

    We need games about cats

  • Bobdonhim

Really? A story about the Top 5 paid apps on Apple? If there is no news….DON’T MAKE SOMETHING UP ABOUT APPLE. Losers.

not a fan of apple, but I thought it was interesting

its not about apple….its about the dominance of a simplified gaming idea……for angry birds to hold top multiple positions in any app store is amazing……this just happens to be apples app store

This isn’t a news site. It’s a tech blog. Every post is not required to be of earth-shattering importance.

If you don’t like it, go to Engadget — oh, they do the same thing.
      I meant Gizmodo — sorry.
Uhh… yeah. All blogs do stuff like this from time to time. I guess you could just read the WSJ and find out about tech news a month after we do.

If you don’t want to read the story, you don’t have to. It really is a CHOICE! So now you are free from your burden of reading each story whether it interests you or not! Fly! Be free!

Hey the Tiny Wings bird isn’t fat, he just has small wings.

Although with all the coins he eats, it’s no wonder he has trouble flying…

    • n00btastic

      He isn’t overweight. He’s undertall!

iZach wrote a clever story, congrats’!

I think the most interesting fact here is that its a AT&T iPhone with 5 full bars…..and 3G!

Called “bad Photoshop”, slightly out of alignment. But, the REAL ‘most interesting fact’ is that it needs both the Network and Wi-Fi radios on to actually work.

Wow, was this article needed Zach. You need to be fired, now, report claims.

    • John

ya useless crap. this just made me unsubscribe from their RSS feed

      • Buh-bye

        Ok. So long. Buh-bye now.

      • John

        See ya

Geeze, you guys are mean. I cringe to think you may all be goofans (aka apple haters) like me. How would you feel if someone called for you to be fired because they didn’t agree with something you did?

      • Sucka

        douchebad alert! douchebad alert!

      • Anonymous

Well, not so sure. You are the POS asking for someone to get fired with no understanding if this individual has a family and people that depend on him. Probably, you live with your parents and haven’t done one single day of honest work and thus don’t think it’s a big deal for someone to get fired.

      • Senor Chang

I don’t know whats worse… fanboys calling for someone to get fired or the fanboy w/ the perpetual unfunny shtick which involves pretending to be another type of fanboy.

        Goofan always loses, every time.

      • Anonymous

Thanks PFChang. You are the typical Apple Fanboy! Immature and intellectually poor.

You’re retarded. Zach does some of the best blogging in the industry. There’s a reason he’s with BGR…I found it to be an interesting point that the most popular mobile gaming applications are all repetitive and animated. The fact that they’re all birds is just coincidence, but well played. No pun intended.

    Cat and Mouse games!

I’ll never understand why some people like this game so much. Its kind of fun for maybe 10 minutes then I lose interest.

      • Zac Caslin

That’s not what the polls say. Read up my fandroid.

I predict the next trend will be bugs.

By more sophisticated gaming, you mean chickens right?

  • Chris

    These games are so annoying

    check out my favs:
Hungry Shark for not so immersive
Galaxy on Fire 2 – super immersive

    to retro: Sword & Sorcery

  • ehm2007

air penguin looks kind of silly. not sure how it made it that far up the chart. I think penguin snowcap challenge is a much better game

  • Yoderantmic

How did you get the temperature in the notification bar of the screenshot?

The great thing about iPhone…you must iPay for almost everything. All Angry Bird versions are ‘free’ on Android. It’s great to not be nickeled & dimed constantly.
