Square iPhone credit card reader now available in Apple Store for $9.95

mobile

On Wednesday, Square’s CEO Jack Dorsey announced that the firm’s iPhone credit card reader — also supported by the iPad and iPod touch — is now available in all 235 U.S. Apple Store locations, and online, for $9.95. The mobile payment solution allows business owners to quickly charge for products and services wherever they have an iOS device and a data connection. Square accepts Visa, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover cards, and the company takes a 2.75% cut of every swipe. If you sign up for Square service online, Square says it will send you the first reader for free.

Thank you Apple. This will really help my business.

Why are you thanking Apple? If you really needed one of these, you could always buy them straight from Square and have them ship it to you. This just means you can go in an Apple store and purchase one now.

I’m thanking Apple because the iphone has completely changed the way I do business and the way I live.
So many business apps for various needs as well as entertainment apps not found on Android possibly due to security like Hulu, Netflix and Sirius satelite radio apps.

same here, everyday i’m thankful to the apps i can use for my business..i found out this new app SalesVu, i downloaded it for free from its website and since i started using it, totally solved my life. It’s like hiring an assistant without paying to someone else. You receive the cards reader and you also get a sophisticated software that controls everything from price lists to inventory, including your transactions organized by time frame, product sold and employee who sold it. You can track both your customers history and your staff movements. Next time i go on vacation i know i’ll be completely unworried because i can control everything wherever i am from my iphone.

Square is also available for Android…

But what bgr failed to mention as well is that the android version actually doesn’t need the card swiped because android is so powerful that it can read the customer mind and get his credit card number like that. Oh, the power of opennenss and freedom.

It’s much more open and free for DROID as well.

      • Anonymous

Yeah much more open to steal your credit card information and passing it on to the crooks in asia and eastern europe. That’s more open for you?

      • http://twitter.com/skylite22 Mr. Brett

how is it more open? i had it for Droid and it was the exact same thing? Actually less because the Droid 2′s touch sensitivity isnt as accurate as the iPhone. Not trying to start a war… just saying.

Now BGR can buy a clue.

Most credit cards are 1.5-1.7% per swipe, so theycharge over a percent more that the retailer/business has to eat? Does not sound that good.

Yeah everything should be free and you can walk to your day job.

You do realize that most banks charge you to be able to take credit cards as well if you go directly through them don’t you? Doing it this way is a whole lot cheaper than going through the bank. Trust me, I know many people who have done it or who have looked into it. Square is a much easier and cheaper service than going through the bank.

      • victoria

i totally agree with you, payment methods like square, intuit and the latest SalesVu are much cheaper and accessible than going trough the bank

The reason the %’s are higher is because there is no contract, no monthly fees, no monthly minimums, no annual fees, etc. Go ask your traditional merchant service provider if they do this and you will quickly realize you have no clue what you are talking about.

So…Square shouldn’t be a profit-driven business model because you don’t like it? For what it’s worth, Square is slightly less than both PayPal and Amazon Payments. Doesn’t seem too bad of a deal since you don’t have to contract with a bank or pay for a credit card terminal.

    • brian

Yes, 1.5- 1.7% for non reward cards, however, some of the Visa/MC cards are hitting merchants for 2.9% and higher, based on the type of Visa/MC card. A no frills Visa, yes on the 1.5-1.7, but not on the ones people are using for business. So, this isn’t a bad deal, especially since you don’t have to personally guarantee as a merchant against charge-backs and there are no transaction fees.

Man, I’m glad I got mine for free before they started charging for it. People who owe me money no longer have any excuse not to pay.

    • http://www.thegraphicmac.com JimD

It’s still free when you order directly from Square. They’re charging only at the brick & mortar stores.

yup i got my for free too !!

I finally got my reader after waiting 6 weeks. It works great, and the terms of service are very fair. Just don’t expect them to ship the reader very quick.

I got mine in 3 days. I ordered it on Saturday and it came in the mail yesterday.

  • KCRic

Of course tomorrow we’ll find out Apple is storing all the credit card info in an unencrypted file on the iPhone.

  • http://twitter.com/skylite22 Mr. Brett

Im glad I signed up when it was free!

Can someone make a good recommendation for a decent stylus for the iPhone? I have one but the tip is so rubbery that it just doesnt respond well.

  • Alex

just download the free app, fill out the needed info, and get a free square in the mail within a week

  • Steve Hillshire

Does this store credit card numbers in an unencrypted format too? Sorry, but if anyone thinks I’d trust a vendor with one of these things, you’re nuts!

    • victoria

i know people who had problems with square that’s why i use SalesVu, a new app that is proved to be totally safe, the device is just a reader of the cards it doesn’t store your credit card information because the information is encripted and has several security layers that dont allow the cellphones store the credit cards info. I’ve been doing a lot of research before choosing my service provider because i want my customers to trust me and i, as a customer too, trust those using salesvu
