Sony kills PSP Go

Gaming

According to AV Watch, Sony has announced that it’s ending sales of its PSP Go portable gaming console. Sony let the wraps off of the PSP Go in June 2009, and while it is both smaller and lighter than the PSP, that comes at the cost of a UMD gaming cartridge slot. The requirement to side-load games or purchase them over the air no doubt played a role in Sony’s poor hardware and software sales in Japan. While the Japanese firm will no longer produce the PSP Go, it will continue to offer device support for repairs and updates. Sony said it will focus its efforts on the PSP-3000 and its successor, currently codenamed “NGP.”

Glad I have both of mine then. This device beats the hell out of the brick they were selling (this on fits in my pocket) and physical media is so very unnecessary. Thanks to the exploits all of my old UMDs including Kingdom Hearts, fit right in my pocket. I can see how this would suck for those who aren’t technically inclined.

As it doesn’t support UMD, I mostly play PSX games on it (I have both).

Sony seems to be killing a lot of innovative products as of late. The P Series laptop for one. Anyone perused the Sony site lately? Pink seems to be the only color of choice and the price point at $799 is still way too high. They just introduced the updated P Series 3rd Quarter last year and they seem to be phasing it out already? Why not build on an existing product and make it better? Don’t just kill a great idea, find out why the consumer isn’t buying it and improve on it. Anyone remember the Lenovo Pocket Yoga concept?

Secondly, their classy James Bond laptop appeal. Now this? Their products are starting to look like the eMac’s of the 90′s with their rainbow color choices and mismatched schemes of keyboard covers. So sad… I like Sony as a company and still think their TV’s, while overpriced, are some of the best on the market.

Sony needs to stop trying to copy Apple and build off of the Sony Style they’ve already established. If Sony is going to survive as a company in this economy they need to get more in touch with what the consumer wants. Quality, innovative products at a competitive price. Don’t take a step back to the 90′s with multi-color. Leave that to Skittles brands and Lucky the Leprechaun. Build on style and class with sharp lines, uni-body construction (black, aluminum, brushed chrome, or carbon chassis) and a price point that people can actually afford. Fix the security breach issues and do the needed P.R. to calm investor’s nerves. I want so badly to invest in Sony but PLEASE get your act together.
