New Microsoft and Sony gaming consoles may not land until 2014

Gaming

According to Kotaku, neither Microsoft nor Sony will launch new gaming consoles before 2014. “Both [Microsoft] and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they’re delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better,” one source told Kotaku. By contrast, Nintendo’s next generation gaming console is expected to land sometime next year. Microsoft and Sony may decide to build onto the current systems, however; for example, Microsoft may release a “Kinect-upgraded” Xbox 360 in 2013. “Sony definitely isn’t launching a successor before 2014 and could stand to benefit by having Microsoft launch first as PS3 builds in North America and builds a strong position in Europe,” said Billy Pidgeon, an analyst with M2 Research. Microsoft has gone on the record saying that it will offer support for the Xbox 360 through 2015, but we’re curious how it will hold consumer interest in a system that made its debut in 2005.

I could be mistaken, but didn’t Sony say when it launched the PS3 that it was moving to a 10-year lifecycle for consoles? If so, this isn’t really “news” per se, although it does highlight that Sony may have been the most forward-thinking of the three in building a console that was a bit more future-proof.

10 year has nothing to do with when they launch a new console. Just how long the current will remain on sale.

This means they can, and I think will, launch ps4 in 2014, but try to keep the ps3 in retail until 2016. This is basically what they did with the ps2 and ps1… as well as what Nintendo did with NES and SNES.

I think you misunderstood my point. I was saying this seems to have been the
plan all along, so it’s not exactly breaking news.

    • Senor Chang

Yeah, I don’t get how this is news at all in anyway. We’re coming to a point where we want the cycle to be longer and every gamer knew it was going to be.

the only people this is news to are the non-gamers who seem to like to chime in and make disparaging remarks about something all the gamers already knew. In other words… an ignorant report for ignorant people.

It did arrive in 2006 so 2004 isn’t too far off.

How does Sony benefit from a new Xbox first? Microsoft will use crap hardware (I love my 360 but I can admit it is crap) than Sony builds another Super machine with crazy technology but again all the developers will be developing for the easy xbox offering rather the publishers popping the cost to actually develop equally looking multi plats. Xbox has held back the damn PS 3, I love Gears of War, Halo but serious 2011 is the year of PS 3 so many amazing exclusives that top everything the 360 has. The PS 3 needs to shine now since MS is trying to dip into Wii’s casual market with the Kinect, While the Move is continues to be balanced with equal mainstream casual game support and hardcore game support.

    • http://twitter.com/medeadly Deadly

This my first time posting on this site but are you kidding me? ps3 got better games than xbox? ps motion is better than kinect? -_- I bet you dont even really have a xbox.

      • Bullet Tooth Tony

Move IS better than Kinect………. Right now. It’s everything the Wii should’ve been, but isn’t.

Kinect has unlimited potential tho… cuz all it’s doing right now is what was possible on the original PSEye Camera on the PS2. But what people are doing with a hacked Kinect attached to their computer? Stunning.

PS3 vs 360 games… it’s all gonna depend on what you’re looking for. I sure do miss Gears of War, I hate not being able to play 2 or 3 with how fun the first was – Crackdown was unbelievably fun, but I hear the 2nd was so hot… but for *me*, the PS3 has better exclusive games. There are many others like me, and many other that prefer the 360. Big deal.

      • Anonymous

Uhh, yeah. PS3 has far, far better games. Playstation 3 has Heavy Rain, Ratchet and Clank, God of War, etc. What does the 360 have? Halo? Does anybody even play that anymore?

      • Senor Chang

The three games you listed is what makes a PS fanboy a PS fanboy… they are games that only Playstation fans love. Trying to argue they’re better is like trying to tell a Mustang enthusiast that a 350Z is better.

Just like a PS fan would never care if Halo or Gears of War came to PS3… no Xbox fan cares about Heavy Rain or God of War.

That’s your best reply though? Stop being a fanboy and STFU, you sound retarded.

      • Anonymous

Good answer. Your “you’re a fanboy” argument totally debunks a logical response.

        Moron.

@max. I have both. And i must admit i tend to flex towards the PS3 more than i do my xbox.

But their are so many GREAT titles on both.

  • Fashosbest

I’m not into the whole debate over consoles but I LOVE my xbox and I use my ps3 for bluray. it’s an amazing machine but I still prefer xbox for the overall experience. If xbox had a bluray, I definitely wouldn’t have bought a ps3. But I do love my God Of War also.

Isn’t this old news? I remember hearing about this more than a year ago

One thing to note is that these consoles are nothing like they were when they were first released. They’ve undergone improvements which makes it perfectly reasonable to wait until 2014.

  • Anonymous

Uggg, so now every game dev has to make their game look shitty compared to the current pc tech for 3 more years. Thanks.

  • http://www.facebook.com/aedebiri Airen Edebiri

Of course they won’t release new consoles…there’s not that much they can add that isn’t better graphics….and even adding better graphics will be too costly to be worth it. There’s only so much they can do without blurring the line between console and gaming PC.

    • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

…except that a cheap laptop can match or best their capabilities now and quite a few publishers/devs have openly stated they’d like to see a new generation start.

plus, there’s a lot more to a game than graphics.

      • http://www.facebook.com/aedebiri Airen Edebiri

Which cheap laptop plays games like PS3 and Xbox 360? And by cheap I mean one that costs $299 or less. I don’t think there’s such a thing.I know there’s more than graphics to games, but in terms of a new CONSOLE, there’s not much apart from better graphics that they couldn’t or haven’t already added to the current generation.

  • http://www.vgchartz.com SuperChunk

Bad title. This is just the assumptions of one analyst, not even a rumor.

Personally, I think they’ll both release by 2013 and its very much possible one may match Nintendo in 2012.

  • http://webhostingreview.info/php-hosting/ smithon

    until 2014 noo

  • Lechero

i just want better disc capacity for better story, graphics are nice but not when they take up all of the disc space just so you can see a wrinkle on a face.

  • http://twitter.com/andreharry Andre Harry

it’s because they want to wait for Nintendo and then copy whatever they come up with…

  • Individual11

2014 is about right. That way sony can figure out how to cram enough high tech in to make the thing too expensive for most people to buy and lead to poor sales; and microsoft can find a new flashing light color to flash in a geometric pattern for when their poor design and inadequate build overheats and melts inside.

  • http://twitter.com/MattSTKC MattSTKC

they’re “telegraphing each other”? Yeah I’m commenting in morse code. Piss off and get some real news.

  • Anonymous

idk how u can make my xbox better.. maybe throw in a bluray player, other then that mine is fine the way it is.

    • Noxile Productions

Other then the design fails; and everything about it is horrid. But that’s microsoft. Why can’t apple make a console :(

      • Anonymous

Apple did. It was called the Apple Pippin, and it fell flat on its face.

Microsoft has gone on the record saying that it will offer support for the Xbox 360 through 2015, but we’re curious how it will hold consumer interest in a system that made its debut in 2005.

Easy answer. keep pumping out great games. The system is now 6 years old and we still can’t get enough of it. Gamers have not stopped showing intrest in Xbox 360 and Microsoft has been good in keeping that intrest. The yearly Dashboard Updates makes the system feel new, Kinect is still new and has yet to show some really good games that takes advantage of the Kinect. The online network and the media for music, movies and games keeps evolving. The online network is by far the best on any system and it just keeps on coming. Microsoft is doing great and with our Bluray mind you… As for Sony PS3 having a 10 year life span. I don’t think it does, I think that Playstation 3 will start to look old when new systems come out. It will fall really fast even if the price continues to be high. With Nintendo rumers going around that it will release a system more powerful than the PS3 and With Microsoft already putting a team together for the next Xbox that will sure blow away any current system on the Market. We can see PS3 losing market share in the US more so than now and over seas as new system trump what would be possible in a new system. Sony was foward thinking for sure, but they under estimated the competition and how big bluray would play in the market where HD movies are available in many different ways. Sony missed the mark and underestimated the marker the Playstation layalty with fans. I know people who gave up any Sony PS2 and 3 for an Xbox 360. When Sony said back in the days that people would buy a PS3 at $800.00, they were really mistaken. That type of arrigence hurt the company right from the start. The Playstation Move?????? that’s all I have to say. The PSP GO……. Not good, the PSP 2 is going to be way expensive and its only going to keep Nintendo ontop of the portable game Market. Sony needs to think powerful, but cheap and affodible to make it in a market where people are penny pinching these days.

  • Matthew

wii looks old, i think Ps3 and Xbox 360 might change their minds when a new wii console comes out. But Ps3 and xbox 360 would also have to have a line up of hot new games. I would hope if and when new consoles come out they won’t be $600-800 because that is just to much to spend, i think $300-$400 is fair. At the rate of tech that smartphones are going i hope a new console will really be able to really last 5-6 years. Smartphones are getting closer to being able to almost be as powerful as the 360 and PS3.

  • Demofya

It would behove both Microsoft and Sony to focus their collective efforts on a different approach….. helping to substantially grow the smartphone gaming market. Its no secret that smartphones are to dominate the gaming industry by 2014…. so that means playing games that are portable and transferrable from one device to a console would logically be the next big innovation….

However, I personally think the next step should be pursued even further… instead of just transferrable games…. both companies should really spend time investing in the idea of motion/hologram technologies…. imagine playing a game that requires no controller as the person’s moves are the controller…. similar to the motion technologies available now for Wii, PS3 and 360…. but this time, all in the palm of ones hands…. yes… portable smartphones using this technology….. BRILLIANT!

Current Gen consoles have maxed out in my view. What is left to come, I believe, will be tiles / games with with breath taking attention to details, graphics and game play (story)

In terms of hardware, i do not foresee any addition apart from the current motion sensor augmentation. remember, both the 360 and PS3 will like to make profit off any hardware sold now till thier next gen console comes out.

I think the next gen PS and XBOX will essentially not be so different from the current cosoles in terms of hardware. maybe mash up the ps camera and the console itself (PS) and Mash up the kinect and the XBOX as one.

The breaking point for both in my view should be how the

    1. Make the platform appealing to casual gamers (XBOX and PS)
    2. Make the platform appealing to hardcore gamers (Nintendo)

This will be a good breaking point for all consoles.

Also it will be interesting to know if MS will adopt Bluray as a standard, especially for 3D capable games and content.

i guess we all have to wait.

  • Justjunk

I’m glad they’re milking it. They come out with new systems too soon. Just when developers are really able to make good games for a system, they come out with a new system which takes the game developers several more years to master. And because I’ve always needed all the systems to make sure I can play all the games, I don’t feel like shelling out just yet. I just bought a ps3!!

  • Justjunk

And I don’t want to dance around the room. I want to sit on my sofa with a controller in my hand. So please NO motion sensing BS!!!

  • Justjunk

Also I think the main reason the ps3 had poor sales was not due to the system cost, but due to the fact that here in Asia, it is the only one of the 3 that one cannot purchase copied games for. Contrary to popular reports, piracy actually helps system sales. Do you honestly think that a kid in Thailand can afford $50+ for a new game? The reason why these people are able to play is because of copied games. And because there is no industry for pirated games for ps3, sales are extremely low in Asia.
