Apple reports Q2 earnings; iPhone beats the Street, iPad misses big, profit up 95%

Breaking

Apple on Wednesday reported earnings for the second quarter of fiscal 2011. Reports from Tuesday suggesting Apple might miss iPad sales estimates were accurate as Apple reported second-quarter sales of only 4.69 units compared to 7.33 million iPads last quarter. Analyst estimates fell between 6 and 8 million iPads for the March quarter. Apple’s iPhone sold 18.65 million units globally in the second quarter compared to 8.75 million units in the same quarter last year and 16.24 million units in the first quarter of fiscal 2011. iPod sales came in at 9.02 million units, down from 10.89 million in the second fiscal quarter of 2010 and 19.45 million last quarter. Wall Street was expecting 16 million iPhones and 9.9 million iPods in the quarter. Mac sales narrowly beat the Street’s estimates of 3.6 million units, totaling 3.67 million units in the March quarter, up from 2.94 million last year and down from 4.13 million from last quarter. Revenue for the second quarter came in at $24.67 billion and Apple recorded $5.99 billion in profit, up 95% from $3.07 billion in the same quarter last year. Apple noted in its earnings call that the earthquakes in Japan will not affect Apple’s supply chain or its products in the third quarter. The company’s full press release can be seen after the break.

chill yo.. This is a forum where fanboys yell at each other about their e-peens. It’s not real life.

    • Michael Scrip

Luckily for Apple…. the iPhone is sold on hundreds of carriers around the world… while the Thunderbolt is only sold at Verizon in the US.

Did you miss the part where Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones globally this quarter? I seriously doubt the HTC Thunderbolt is causing a loss of sleep in Cupertino.

But you keep railing against the Verizon iPhone… it that’s what it takes to make you feel good :)

      • Anonymous

No, but 350,000+, Google-apps-enabled Android devices ARE. (Google does NOT count Android devices without it’s Android apps suite in those numbers; it’s been said time and time again). Thank you.

      • Michael Scrip

        Apple… one company… selling 207,222 iPhones a day…

Or 50+ different Android phones spread across many manufacturers… selling 350,000+ a day…

        Man… you gotta admire Apple’s spunk…

And who actually cares about that, aside from anal people like yourself? For
stock holders, such as myself: I care about product news, innovations, and
how their sales are going, up or down, and how it’ll all effect its price.
Android’s domination helps more devs get on board to develop more apps. Devs
already flock to iOS because they have a consistent OS platform across
millions of phones, iPods, and iPads to build from, and the benefit of
developing full-featured iPad apps as well. Certain things about Apple and
iOS over the years have lead users and devs to flock to other platforms.

      • Anonymous

Yes, “only.” At an average price of $660 per device. Motorola’s ASP is in the $300s; so is HTCs. FYI, Motorola’s last quarterly profit was a more $80 million, or 1/50th of Apple’s iOS profit. But thanks for your insight.

      • Anonymous

That’s why I own Apple stock. But stock price or any other financial figure
(aside from the price on the tag and my monthly bill) is not why I buy a
device; it’s about what fits Me, and that’s why I roll with Android instead,
same goes for plenty of others. Apple’s feeling all kinds of pressure now,
to sue the maker of their A4 and A5 chips?! They couldn’t work something out
behind the scenes? I guess not….

      • Michael Scrip

@ddpacino — “And who actually cares about that, aside from anal people like yourself?”

        ?

        You brought up Android’s 350,000+ activations…

I don’t own Apple stock… and the only Apple device I own is an old 2nd Gen iPod Nano.

You’re the one who said “Apple’s numbers only equate to roughly 207,222 phones/day. Thank you.”

You give us Apple-haters a really bad name. Stop it with the puns. They’re not funny. Putting an “i” in front of every other word and ripping on the iPad’s name is juvenile. And there is nothing sexually ambiguous about G.I. Joe cause it’s a damn toy. It’s made of plastic and given to children for play. If you find a deeper meaning in G.I. Joe, I suggest you check yourself into a mental health institution.

      • Anonymous

Personally, I don’t know any children who play with G iJoe. And, I tried signing myself in; they were only accepting new sheep.

      • Anonymous

On the other hand, your comments prove there’s at least one child who plays with a computer.

As for the Thunderbolt, I note HTC’s baby profit of $500 million, which is 1/12th of Apple’s. Cheers.

You mean Apple just popped out of thin air as a gazillion dollar company? Maybe you were born as an adult (assuming you are one).

Duh perspectively, HTC only makes smartphones.

      • http://twitter.com/NBGuyver Nitebreed

only because apple rapes you for a lot more money for outdated equipment. Don’t brag. It’s not a good look.

    • Ultraseven32

dude what’s your problem? but if apple start selling tampons, your woman – if u got one – will buy it. so relax and suck it up!!!

    • Garymckoy1

I don’t think that it would be possible for you to sound like more of a “HATER”. Like its Apples fault that your Android phone battery dies in two text messages and your web page scrolling is jerking harder than your mom jerking you! Now lets wait a few months and check over iPhone units moved vs the Thunderbolt. Notice the way that I used the correct names for things like a grown up? You like that don’t you?! You can do it too! LMAO!

    • Akira B

Thunderbolt didn’t beat total iPhones sold, or even rate of iPhones sold per day at Verizon. I’m sure you can figure out how to go read Verizon’s earnings report.

Whoops correction. Initially had 2000 shares. Sold some in the past couple of years so down to 1350 shares now. Stupid moves on my part to sell.

Yes the xoom’s are selling well. I read two days ago that they sold well over 157,000 so far. I think I took more dumps then they sold xoom’s.

I wonder which one of the 357 analysts were correct or even close? LOL

  • Anonymous

No company can possible grow at a rate of 95% per year. Not one as massive as Apple. Law of big numbers. Enron anybody?

    • Anonymous

It was 95% growth. . . it was 95% in profit growth. It’s what happens when the iPhone ASP hits $660 and they sell nearly 19 million of them.

      • Anonymous

But 95% is more than doubling in growth. Did their Apple stores double in size? Did the iPhones and Macintosh Personal Computing Devices double in size? This is really fishy, and I will get down to the most bottom of the it.

The bad ipad numbers are because the ipad2 isn’t much better than the first iPad. People expect more from a tablet than a big applauncher.

    • Anonymous

err… nope… they can’t make them fast enough. They want to have 4-8 weeks in the pipeline, and they have less than 3.

Tim cook just said on the call that the problem isn’t one of demand, but supply (but not japan… just couldn’t ramp).

    • Anonymous

Yeah…lack of demand explains why there’s no stock anywhere.

  • 1T2dirtnap

If the iPad missed estimates I can only imagine Android tablets. Wonder if Android tablet manufacturers were able to cover cost? I can’t imagine so. Man Apple made a killing!

  • Buzzcut

iPad misses big? They sold 4.69 million units in the quarter. That’s a miss? Sure, they didn’t meet analysts expectations, but that’s probably because they can’t make ‘em fast enough.

Is there another tablet that even came close to 4.69 million units sold? Somebody posted “LOL iiPad fail.”. If that’s a fail, I bet Motorola (which makes a fine device, by the way) pray they will fail just as spectacularly as Apple has done.

    • Anonymous

On the earnings call, they said it was purely ramp down of iPad1 vs ramp up of iPad2.

They also said they are making more iPad2s today than 1 month after iPad1 rollout and they aren’t able to fill consumer demand. And Japan is not a factor on this (so they say).

Finally they said, that edu organizations are buying iPads 1:1 with mac desktops/laptops…. an amazing sector adoption rate for them.

I’m sure RIM, Samsung, and Motorola are wishing they had such a bad quarter deliverying tablets.

They are so inferior it’s not FUNNY! I asked someone to open a MacPro and it’s amazing. Instead of screws they use tape and chewed gum. Compare that to a clone I can build in my mom’s garage and I have it beat. You are sooooo right. Their products are really inferior. I put a cheap clone from an obscure chinese clone manufacturer next to an iMac and the chinese looks a lot better. Darn it QNX, you are a genius!

  • http://www.bigjobsboard.com/ Brad Jobs

I have heard that Apple’s revenue is gathered by the iPhone sales. This is truly remarkable. It means that the iPhone is more useful that the iPad. lol Well, I have both devices so I think I might be saying this at an Apple-addict-person’s perspective.

  • http://profiles.google.com/whenemusattack Kris Andrews

Saying profit is up by 95% is misleading! hat kind of profit? Gross profit, net profit, operating profit?
