Samsung prepping beastly 2GHz dual-core processor for next wave of smartphones

mobile

Already bored by these anemic dual-core 1GHz smartphone processor offerings? You’re in luck. Korean blog MK is reporting that a “high-ranking” Samsung official has indicated that the company is “planning to release a 2GHz dual core CPU-equipped smartphone by next year.” The same official went on to tout that the new silicon would “have the data processing capacities of a regular PC.” If you’re not into Samsung hardware, fear not. The report notes that the company is “considering separate sales of the CPU units for other smartphone makers.” Moores Law is certainly starting to pay dividends in the smartphone processor space, as chip efficiencies — and speeds — are beginning to rapidly improve… now all we need is a better smartphone battery.

This is great news, 2gHz and Dual-core!!

    • Awesome

Too bad in the grand scheme of things this really means nothing except more sales to idiots such as yourself who believe that this is necessary.

      • Anonymous

It is necessary. Us goofans (aka apple haters) need new hardware every 2-3 weeks to be excited. As long as we have new hardware and bad news for apple we are happy.

      • Anonymous

Yes, the Goofan Nation has spoken; excommunication to all the envious haters.

well said brother , right on

        gaming.

        /thread

      • Anonymous

Dughhh, people who use those “other” devices don’t know how to play games, unless someone tells them to [dangle preposition]…

    • Bullyboyb

If you have an Apple iPhone or any other os including windows phone you don’t need that kind of processor. With the slow, cluttered android you need a 10ghz processor.
After a certain point speed gains become meaningless and small. Apple and wp7 are very close to that point because of superior software architecture (not user interface). As for android every little helps.

      • KCRic

Lol really? Wtf are you talking about, did you pull that line out of your ass or what?! Android is Linux, Windoze is never and will never be faster than Linux. Also it naturally take more advantage of multicores better than W7 or WP7 does. The MACH kernel can give Linux a run for it’s money, I’ll give you that. However, it’s limited by the architects writing the rest of the software and the hardware that it’s running on so the thread limit has to be kept low otherwise it slows way down on the iPhone. So in reality, the iPhone would benefit a lot from higher clock cycles and multiple cores at this point, more than Android would.

Thanks for trying though, that was a great game but I blew you out of the water. Now go home.

Correction: WP7 is actually WM7 since, contrary to Microsoft’s idealized fantasy, it is still a Mobile Operating System. Unless, of course, you have found a way to install WM7 on a “Full” professional dssktop/laptop?

      • Bullyboyb

You are one deluded individual. You are miles off the mark. How would a 2ghz processor significantly improve a iPhone? The cost benefit analysis will show it won’t. Its already fast and smooth. Any increases in speed will be so small in real world usage its nit worth it. You think putting a 2ghz on an Apple will mean twice the speed? You my friend are a joker.
However for android it differentiates manufactures and may add speed to an os that desperately needs smoothness. For android to be as smooth as IOS or WP7 it needs a 10ghz quadcore processor.
Windows is designed with a specific processor in mind so is Apple. These systems rake full advantage if thoose processors and maximize the speed and smoothness opposed to android that’s lumped together and given to manufacturers to go figure.

      • Bullyboyb

The Palm pre for example does not have a 1ghz processor but the multitasking and smoothness is better than any android device. Its not about how many processors the architecture can support. But how much can the architecture take advantage of a given processor you dimwit.

        @Bullyboyb

I guess that efficient OS helped you type that post laden, no iLaden, with mistakes. Way to show iT off, genius.

        @PAPINYC
Somehow when I read your posts birth control comes to mind………….

Oh good thing, ‘Bring’ me some Magnums cuz’ I hit ‘iT’ so much this weekend that iRan out.

        Thanks

samsung like to receive the royalty payments from various phone & tablet manufacturers.

    • Anonymous

actually you can guarantee these will be in Apple products as well the iPad2 got the new chips first this time..

    • Ted_standley

      Trade offs people.

Unless they give these new phones 2500mAh batteries, they will be know as “battery vampires”!!!!

      Let the whining begin then….

What makes you think they will run Android first? Are you forgetting the deal with Microsoft, for Samsung phones to use Win Phone 7 as their O/S?

  • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

I’m so excited about this. My Galaxy S2 has gotten old real fast. Thankfully this will be out by August I’d imagine.

  • Jesster King

I for one, wouldn’t mind having a bigger and heavier battery if it meant my phone would last longer, or at least sell OEM extended batteries with proper covers for all phones ffs.

    • stranger

It’s called a laptop or a tablet. BB has it right with something like the BB Touch + Playbook combo.

And cue the Playbook hate in 3…2….1…..

      • http://www.droiddoes.com/ Norm

        XOOM 4G LTE > Playbook

      • Awesome

and then you woke up and so did the 7 billion other people who didn’t buy a Xoom.

      • Anonymous

        XOOM 4G LTE > everything!

  • stranger

Now all you f’tards will have a 3-hour battery life instead of 5. Sweet.

    • atlharry

You guys really don’t grasp the concept that processors don’t use that power unless it’s called for do you? Overclocked with better battery life? Yes. Retard.

    • Anonymous

True but, at least we’ll have REAL smartphones that can do a whole lot more instead of dumbphones with a pretty little “Home” button.

      Go play on Wi-Fi!!!

  • Guest

wow 2GHz dual-core phones, I can’t wait…I’ve always wanted a wireless phone that requires to be plugged in at all times to keep the battery alive *rolls eyes*

  • Sefiroh

very sad how the processing power of phones is always in an upward trend, yet the battery manufacturers haven’t made any headway. what good are these powerful, super-fast phones if you need to carry around 3 batteries? i have lost any excitement in seeing any new “super-phone”released, since i know what comes with all that speed and power.

    • Anonymous

That would be true for any phone not using android. There is not a single android phone that lasts less than 2 months on a single charge. Ask any of the goofans (aka apple haters) on this site and you will see.

      TimmyBoy, average 4 months
PAPITO, average 2 months (due to the amount of porno he watches)
      Walt, 7 months
      ZAPATITO, 4 months
Norm, 8 months (Norm is testing the new version of android with self-generating power)

      • Sefiroh

you’re an asshole. that is all.

      • Anonymous

If I were a mean Apple Fanboy, such as you, I would say it takes one to know one. But, I am a Goofan (aka Apple Hater) and thus a gentleman. So I won’t say “it takes one to know one.” :-)

      • Sefiroh

@GoofanAKAAppleHater to further prove your stupidity, i own a DROID Incredible. i hate Apple. i just hate stupid comments that don’t lend to anything credible more.

    • KCRic

Look, if you’re stupid then just admit it. No one will judge you. When you’re stupid and try to talk smart you just look like a limp dick.

The girls (and some guys) will love so much heat in their pockets!

  • Scott

    Is a external battery included?

  • Ld

What’s next a core i7? U know they have thought about it.

  • Cellularghost

and you will needa 4000mah battery to run them in 8 hour blocks

  • Jayanthi Rangarajan

As more & more phones do more on the web, the emphasis shouldn’t be on processing power, but more on optimized software products & architectures.

Take for example Novarra’s highly optimized web-browsing experience which has been optimized for mobile devices. This offloads the burden from the mobile CPU and is much more scalable.

  • Eyednttrusya

…the GALAXY S2 sgould hav this when it drops in MAY.

  • http://www.searingarrow.com AlienSix

And batteries arent even being improved. It will ship with a 1500 mah battery

  • Anonymous

I’m excited to see what Intel’s new lineup can do. Samsung’s Hummingbird is fantastic tho.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hsichan Hsi Chan

Oh christ, its the GHz race all over again. Is anyone actually planning on editing/encoding movies on their mobile devices, data crunching for SETI, or playing Jeopardy against their phones? No? Then who exactly needs a 2GHz dual-core processor in their phones?

  • Ben

This new 2GHz processor will be sold with a small wagon in which you can carry the 8 batteries that it will take you to get through an 8 hour day

    • Anonymous

If, and only if, that small wagon is powered by Android and Google then we, the Goofans (aka Apple Haters) of the world, won’t have a problem rolling it around.

    *****Breaking News*******

After many smartphone manufacturers hearing about samsung’s 2Ghz dual core and HTC 16 mega pixel camera. Smartphone manufacturers will now be selling smartphones with 32 inch dual displays.

  • Anonymous

Seriously this is getting kind of funny, what could you really do that would require a 2Ghz dual core processor on a smartphone with most likely a 4.3 inch display. Think of what else you would need to go along with a 2Ghz dual core processor. Most smartphones don’t even have 1 gig of ram and would require more and faster speed to actually benefit. So sounds like fun, paying $1000 for a 2 year contract on a new phone lol.

  • http://jimramk.tumblr.com JRK

This is great news IMO for tablets more than for phones. 2GHz would really allow for some proper multitasking. I wanna see what plaform will allow for side by side apps like in a desktop OS? Probably WebOS or Android.

  • 1T2dirtnap

I actually think this is great! I remember my first DROID (OG), when it took a whopping 0.99 seconds to open the Photos app, however, when I upgraded to my DInc. It only took 0.89 seconds to open the Photos app! Thats a difference of one tenth of a second! What a noticeable speed increase! I mean forget about the fact the battery only lasted half day. If a 2GHz processor will allow me to save just 1 tenth of a second when I open my Twitter app! The 2 hours of battery life I get will be all worth it.
