HTC working on 16-megapixel shooter for Windows Phone device [video]

mobile

We already told you about Samsung’s plans to double the now-standard speed of high-end, dual-core smartphone processors from 1GHz to 2GHz. So why not double the standard 8 megapixel core image-sensor on smartphone cameras too, no? Blog PocketNow has sniped an HTC advert that boasts of a 16 megapixel smartphone shooter. The end of the video promotion depicts a Windows Phone device that has a look akin to the HTC Desire S — as PocketNow points out, this could simply be a placeholder device. HTC is not known for its optical awesomeness, so hopefully this new and improved imaging-core refocuses the company’s efforts on its camera. The video is after the break.

    5mpx, 10, 12, 16, 56… whats the point… It’s just a freaking phone NOT DSLR CAMERA!

We have these inventions called “point and shoot” cameras. They’re for the average person to use. That’s what this is supposed to replace, not a Hasselblad.

this won’t even be as good as a P&S. The sensor is minute compared to even a P&S and the lens won’t be any where near as good. You’ll still have slow shutter speeds for blurry images or high ISO for more noise.. even more so with twice as many pixels in the same sized sensor.

All the megapixels in the world don’t take away from the fact mobile phone cameras all suck.

    • anDROIDfan

Specially the one on the iphone 4!

The iPhone 4 has a camera??????

        *STOP THE PRESSES*

Nope. Since Apple is all about liberal arts, they actually have a man, come out and paint whenever you tell the phone to take a pic. It’s actually a guy taking drawing it live!

      Even DROID cameras? Blasphemy!

Are they going to do anything about the lenses? The whole megapixel++ thing wasn’t impressive in the 1990s, and it’s not impressive now.

GIVE. US. GOOD. LENSES. And throw a good flash in there, while you’re at it.

    • RealDeal

Totally agree with you! What good is 16MP when the image quality is utter garbage. You end up with 16MP of dark, blury, noisy crap.

  • Adsf

dang, that has more mp than my dslr… maybe i should sell it to buy the phone :P

Shouldn’t a tech site know that megapixels beyond 6.1 are indistinguishable to the naked eye in standard size pictures (4×6). MPX is just a marketing tool to make you bleieve you are getting a good camera. 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and above MPX is not better than 6 unless you plan on printing a posters or pictures the size of walls. Lets imporve the lens not the megapixels.

    • KCRic

I take pics of hot girls from far away while they’re bending over. All those extra MP’s are useful to me.

  • Senor Chang

I say what good is it without better stabilization? My last 3 phones… the littlest movement made the pic blurry… the camera on my G1 was so crappy that I got to the point where I forgot it even took pictures. Plus the load time it took to get the camera up and running… pointless. The HD2′s was much better… but lacked a physical button for the camera! HTC just does not seem to know cameras well.

Oddly enough… the old HTC MDA had a great camera (but no flash). I had broken my camera in France on vacation and resorted to using the MDA temporarily until I could get a new one… oddly enough, it took some of the more interesting pics!

Were you trying to take pictures of yourself with the first two phones???

      That might explain it…..

    • Anonymous

I agree PFChang! Image stabilization would be the priority prior to higher MP count.

Unless the lens is twice as big this is useless.

  • http://twitter.com/Stinsonddog Stinsonddog

Who cares – pixels will be very small and ineffective. They should keep it at 5 and make the sensor bigger.

While I applaud their efforts to improve their cameras, this is useless without a good lens, or a xenon flash.

I, for one, am all for smartphone manufacturers improving the quality of their cameras. Smartphones are expected to perform other tasks as well as dedicated devices (think MP3 players, GPS units, etc), why not the camera? This just isn’t the most important step they need to take….

    • http://twitter.com/Haz3rd Mike C

But it IS a step. I’ll take that over nothing.

      • Anonymous

Sure, like I said, I appreciate the fact that they’re trying. I don’t carry my camera anymore, I just use my phone, and I don’t need to explain how much the quality of pictures I take has dropped. I just wish they’d take steps that would have more impact…even just tossing on the xenon flash would make a huge difference in low light pictures.

What a waste of money that is going to cost the consumer more, when they go to upgrade their phone. People take pics on their cellphone that is true. But i don’t think many people use their cellphone to take family photos or something they really want to hang on their wall. Too bad the cell phone manufacturers cant put their research and money into something more beneficial like longer battery life.

  • http://twitter.com/Haz3rd Mike C

Why does everyone here hate the idea of your main point and shoot camera being in your phone? I would LOVE that. Having the power of a point and shoot on my phone, being able to take a picture and instantly share it, instead of waiting till I get to a computer is awesome. Who wouldn’t want that? It is certainly no replacement for a dSLR, but if you think it is, you wouldn’t have a dSLR to begin with.

    • Anonymous

of course we want that, but 16 MP sensor that’s the same physical size and the same crappy lens will produce WORSE images, due to a poor signal to noise ratio. If they want to have the cell phone replace the P&S camera, they’ll need to make better lenses and better flashes, NOT increase the MP.

  • Rock Me Like A Hurricane

They better allow MicroSD cards to be used. 16gigs isn’t what it used to be.

    • KCRic

      +1
I remember when 2 gigs was a lot.

Megapixels aren’t the problem here. It’s the sensors and software. Not only that, the other big hurdle is video conferencing with lagfree video.

  • Anonymous

I think this is a little bit of over kill. My digital camera that is still just a camera is 10 mega pixels but I still prefer it over my phone’s 8 because it can zoom, take better videos, and I don’t have to worry about putting all my eggs in one basket.

  • Chrisfen

Battery life for such a device:

    .743 hours

What HTC needs is to start hiring real engineers and stop hiring the 18 year old script kiddies.
