India bans Nokia's push email service

Legal

Though the move has yet to cause Nokia CEO Stephen Elop to storm out of an interview, India’s Economic Times reported on Thursday that the country’s government has barred Nokia’s upcoming push email service. India’s Ministry of Home Affairs has relayed directives to the Department of Telecom stating that Nokia’s new push email product should not be permitted to launch in India until a system is put in place that will allow the government to monitor communications sent a received on devices. “In view of the Intelligence Bureau’s report, Department of Telecommunications is requested to advice the Telecom Service Providers not to launch Nokia’s proposed pushmail/powermail service without putting in place monitoring facilities to the satisfaction of the LEAs,” the Ministry wrote. Nokia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Cue NOK’s CEO complaining about being “singled out.”

What’s a country to do when they have thousands of terrorist attackers communicating with each other via blackberry’s and Nokia devices. If you’re a terrorist or a drug lord, get yourself a blackberry… Awesome security

Perhaps improve the living conditions that are causing the Maoist rebels of India to constantly attack in the East. Work with all minority groups to stop the in-fighting, instead of taking the US style approach, find out why they are pissed and work to make it better. That way everyone will benefit.

Oooh, I like that. Good job.

      • Zeroisjdm

How did this fool not mention something about Goofans(aka apple haters)?

Which by the way, of the 900,000 times you’ve posted, you would think we knew what a Goofan was, but thanks for your clarification, each, and every time.

        except this time…thank you sir

Do you honestly think improving living conditions is just that simple? If that was the case how come the US, with all the millionaires still have homeless people? It’s not just about standard of living. It’s that entire region and it’s not something that is fixed overnight. It takes years, even decades for a country’s standard of living to rise. Before low end IT jobs were shipped over there they were even worst. Living conditions increase by having better jobs. So do you suggest more outsourcing to India to help their cause and put more people out of work in the US? They can’t just create jobs and government can’t just make money to build stuff. If they did the value of their currency decreases dramatically. See Brazil.

        Very sensible reply.

      • http://twitter.com/imhike London Snoward

If it was that easy there would be no problems, unfortunately HOW you improve the living conditions of a place and culture you have no business going in can piss a lot of those people off… Finding out why they are pissed is useless because they pre determinately hate you because of what you believe and what they are taught …

        Great plan

Do you know what’s happening there ? Or just providing solutions at the cushion on your chair ? If working with minority groups and get them in peace is so easy, we won’t have all the terrorist thats prominent in the eastern world..

Very naive to the actual situation. If things were that easy there would be no trouble whatsoever. What makes you think they aren’t doing those things? Just don’t talk about stuff you have no idea on.

How about we just nuke them sand niggers problem solved.

The terrorists in the Mumbai attacks never used BlackBerry devices to communicate. The only used the BlackBerrys to read the news after the government cut off communications to the hotel. The attacks were planned using satellite phones and radios. Maybe India should ban satellites?

There is a monitoring solution for anyone using a BIS device. So I can only assume your comments are due to some form of mental incompetence.

      • http://www.vkvraju.com vkvraju

Well, it is not limited to only one attach that India had seen and publicized. There are many other such threat events being continuously planned in the territory. May be the Intelligence department of India has more info where they realized that monitoring BlackBerry & Nokia Push services would help them in their further investigation. I think these companies should support the Govt.’s initiative on sensitive things like terrorism and so…

BlackBerry was very adamant for this initially. That is not good practice…

      • Anonymous

Do you really think a terrorist organization is going to register a BES server and the associated cellphone numbers with a telecom provider? If India can’t sniff out a front company they have bigger problems than access to encrypted data.

India is rife with corruption as well as having a history of corporate espionage. What company is going to open their communications to that?

  • Generatione

    Who’s Nokia?

    • http://www.vkvraju.com vkvraju

Nokia is a manufacturing company that sells phones to intelligent people around the world. They also contribute to the society with their initiatives like Go Green and Life Tools and such…

You can find more information about them through the internet though. But the above information can be a good start nonetheless…

  • QNX Please

Wow, India is becoming more paranoid than China or North Korea. And to think they are supposedly a free democratic country.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Democratic has nothing to do with it. When you live in a region where terrorists live, it’s probably more important for them to be able to monitor if they needed to. Besides corporations and government, basic users don’t need super secure email. If you do, then I would wonder what you are doing in your free time.

      • Anonymous

trampling basic rights in the name of security = the first sign that the terrorists have won.

      • Anonymous

Well it’s either that or let them blow shit up all the time.

      • Anonymous

@zehphxiii yeah, because nothing is being blown up all the time now. I’m sure its because of BlackBerry and Nokia!

Do you think that IBM & Microsoft provide these countries access to mail? They provide a subset of keys, and expect governments to crack the remaining to gain entry to the mail.

      • http://www.vkvraju.com vkvraju

Irony is people/users are willing to share their info with companies like Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc but not with Governments…

        Where are we going?

      • Anonymous

Lets be real honest, if the US pulled this, people would be saying this is what the NAZI’s do or the Soviets. But if India and Saudi Arabia does it, well they have a good reason. It’s all BS.

    • Anonymous

yeah, I wonder how much it has hindered India’s economic growth.

btw. China and North Korea justify their repressive tactics in the name of security, as well. none of these countries, including the US, are being completely (or even mostly) truthful about the purpose of their surveillance.

Are we to understand that since Google hasn’t received such request its Gmail service is easy to intercept?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

That’s possible but maybe Google hasn’t locked down email transmission from the government which means India has no gripes. Being easy and making it easy are 2 separate things.

    • RealDeal

Gmail is operated by a responsible international corporation, India can always demand access from Google to emails.

Encrypted emails sent between mobile devices and private mail servers is what India seems to be cracking down on.

    Is ActiveSync next?

  • Nofan

Trash. Large businesses should find a new hub.

Can’t we just eradicate the middle east? I feel like that would solve a lot of the world’s problem.

    • Generatione

Sigh. India is not in the middle east.

      • Scott

Ehh, it’s close enough. It’s just like calling the middle of the US “mid-west”. I live on the west coast, so to me, it’s more like the “mid-east”. Either way, they provide crappy tech support. lol

      • Thrill_kill

        Dell customer support nuff said.

    • Anonymous

Instead of eradicating the middle east I say we grab all the racist dickheads like you throw them in a huge rocket and send them on a one way cruise to Pluto. Getting rid of all you dipshits would probably solve 75% of societies problems.

      • Dhvfgcgh

        I agree. Execute them.

      • Thrill_kill

I hate Indians too, the dark skinned smelly know it alls. They are like a virus. That must be destroyed.

    • Portio

Wow, um go back to fixing carburetors and put that fancy “komputer” thing away. Geography and politics are clearly not a big deal, living in the hills of the “Midwest”, but we’ll try not to hold it against you if you promise to stop posting.

    • http://www.vkvraju.com vkvraju

Lets try North America first. That ACTUALLY will eradicate lot of the issues in the World.
Think about it. Eradicating the problem creator FIRST has enormous benefits than clearing the problem itself…

      you display such class:)

  • http://twitter.com/neurojava neurojava

think about it guys – if the US had Pakistan instead of Canada up-north and Afghanistan right up north next to it – what do you think would happen here? Friendship Bridge at Niagara Falls?

The world is too complex for the black and white generalizations I often read here. Especially, when some of them (its good to see that its still just a minority) have such racial overtones.

Yeah, sure we should have concerns about privacy. And yes, India is corrupt. But it IS a hugely complex and functioning democracy. And it is incredibly diverse. And yes, for the most part, a billion people still live peacefully in a country 33% the size of the US. And it IS one of the drivers of the global economy.

So frankly, in the larger scheme of things, Nokia or RIM doesn’t matter. The lives of Indians matter more. Like the lives of every citizen in the world.
