Microsoft boosts Windows Phone hardware requirements [video]

mobile

During its MIX11 conference in Las Vegas, Microsoft discussed the new minimum requirements that manufacturers will have to meet in order to run the Windows Phone operating system on a phone. The biggest change is that OEMs must now choose to include a Qualcomm MSM7x30 or MSM8x55 Snapdragon processor, as opposed to the original 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8x50 chip. The newer 8×55 chip supports CPU speeds up to 1.4GHz, and also has the more recent Adreno 205 graphics processor. The MSM7x30 supports CPU speeds between 800MHz and 1GHz and also supports 720p HD video and enhanced graphics rendering. Aside from also requiring support for a gyroscope, Microsoft’s other requirements are the same. The screen must have an 800 x 480-pixel resolution with 4 or more contact points, the phone must offer at least a 5-megapixel camera, and it must also have at least 256MB of RAM and 8GB of Flash storage, among other requirements. Hit the jump for a video from MIX11 from Channel 9 that details some of the other architecture and chassis changes.

    256 MB of RAM? lol.

Same as my BB 9700, sweet!

256 and still as smooth as butter. I have said this before and ill say it again…the second phones running WP7 start having similar hardware to Android phones i am jumping ship. I refuse to have inferior hardware. All WP7 phones are running specs that Android ran 1-2 years ago. The software is super smooth, but i like to impress ppl talking about my hardware stats (yes im on of those types.)

Interesting how you said you like to impress “ppl” and not “friends” :)

Just playing. I’d be interested in WP7 if they got rid of that horrific home screen.

256MB of ram and it’s this smooth. I want to see what it does with 1Gb.

      stay in school puke.
You Don’t even know how to read.
      Its minimum requirements.

I wish Google started tightening up its stuff for Android. Yes I know, Android is just the software but still. They should care about quality control. All phones should have notification lights and camera key amongst other things.

I also wish that. But that would go against what android is supposed to be. Open source platform that anybody can download and use.

Funny thing is my friend upgraded to the iPhone 4 this morning, tried to show off but I pulled out my trophy. HTC 7 trophy I am talking about and said “take it for a spin, tell me what you think.” I left the office and when I got back he was on his way to change his return his phone. After an hour and some minutes he returned with the trophy and said to me, “take it for a spin and tell me what you think”. Hate it or love I, wp7 is a joy to use and buttery smooth. It just works.

So the funny thing is he didn’t have enough time to use an iPhone and realize that he CAN search on maps, he CAN search the App Store without music results showing up, he CAN run GPS/VoIP in the background, he CAN choose from 300,000 apps, he CAN change the search engine, he CAN use HTML5 on the web, and he CAN download updates (like today) on the very first day they’re released? All of which WP7 fails to do.

Yeah, sounds like he made quite an uneducated choice.

      • Bullyboyb

He had an iPhone and this was an upgrade.
He does not use VoIP. More than enough free minutes for that.
        - He does nor need 300 000+ apps
        - He has a Sat nav for navigation and Bing maps does a fine job if you are not intending to use your phone for navigation. (he checked that one out)
        - He doesn’t need to change the search engine, all he needs is accurate results
-And wp7 can search the marketplace without music results after NoDo (the Vodafone trophy got the update).
        - Last but no least he is not a fanboy and now enjoying the zune subscription service, office, point a shot with his phone camera, Facebook intergration in the people and pictures hub.

      Cool story bro

  • Rock Me Like A Hurricane

I hope they will finally let people use a microSd card. Thats just stupid why they won’t.

I hope these are only the minimum requirements and Nokia gives us some crazy hardware.

  • hhawk

do most current W7 phone meet or exceed this spec? Or can those phone owners find out they will not be able to upgrade because their <1 year old phone doesn't have the right stuff?

    • Bullyboyb

This was discussed, outcome is they can use all the new upcoming features. It was carefully thought out . Hope that answers ur questions.

at least microsoft is putting in a minimum spec, course these specs are probably what is top of the line in blackberries.

Still stuck on late 2009 hardware w/ some speed bumps.

For the prices W7 phones are going, they are sorely overpriced considering the hardware innards (slow cpu, slow gpu, lack of mem, lack of accessible sensors, stuck at WVGA).
