Google Maps for Android surpasses 50 million downloads

mobile

Google Maps has hit a new milestone as the first Android application to surpass the 50 million download mark. The free application has seen many revisions since its public introduction in 2008 — as part of Android 1.6 — and now includes 3D modeling with multi-touch zoom and panning, free voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation, and support for Google’s Latitude and Places products. Given that it’s available on every iteration of Android — that we can think of — we’re not surprised to learn it’s the most downloaded application ever. Congrats to the Google Maps team.

Thought this was a native app on android…. since its a Google Mobile OS…. and the iPhone has googles map natively

Do you know what “natively” means ? It can’t be “native” if it’s developed by Google. Google maps is always a separate package, whether it be iOS, Android, Windows Phone or Windows Mobile…

And I guess to clarify my post below…. just because it came preinstalled on your phone, does not make it a “native” application :)

Have you tried to remove Google Maps from iOS? Isn’t that one of the distinctions of a “native” app? It it can’t be removed, it’s native – not just pre-installed

I wonder if the ’3D modeling with multi-touch zoom and panning’ will ever come to iOS devices

the one and only app I truly miss since I went to verizon iphone.
This app has no competition on any platform.
I guess all the more reason for google to keep versions for other platforms watered down.
Im keeping my fingers crossed anyway

  • heyhey

Free voice guided turn by turn navigation. $50-60 on other platforms or $10-12 per month. This alone makes Android worth the price of admission.

Compare to RIM – who still can’t figure out how to merge their 12 y.o. BB Maps with their BB Traffic into a single App.

How do you get 3D modeling to work? I can’t find any Layer for it.

Now if only Google would allow us to completely cache maps of states or larger.
