Nintendo may drop Wii to $150 on May 15th

Nintendo may drop the price of its Nintendo Wii game console from $200 to $150 on May 15th, Engadget is reporting.  The new price will likely help Nintendo compete better against Microsoft and its Xbox 360 4GB console —which currently retails for $199.99. According to recent figures from NPD Group, Nintendo sold 454,000 Wii consoles during the month of February, far behind Microsoft’s 535,000 Xbox 360 sales figure. Similarly, Nintendo reported weaker hardware sales in its Q3 earnings report, so the move could help it reignite consumer interest.

$150 would be a sweet price point. I’ll have to keep my eye on it now.

The Nintendo Wii has been out for almost five years and the XBox 360 for almost six years.

Why, after so many years, are people now suddenly purchasing these game consoles?

    Are people THAT cheap?

Its not just people buying them for the first time a lot of people are buying new ones to replace broken consoles

Beyond the 360′s first couple of years… none of the consoles have had defect rates of any concern that would be of any significant impact on their sales figures.

Last numbers from 3rd parties that measure this sort of thing suggest Wii’s is lowest at about 3% while the other two are now around 7%.

Here’s something from 2009, granted this was before Sony/MS redesigned their systems with smaller and cooler CPU/GPUs which greatly reduced 360′s defect rate as well as nominally reduced PS3s.

wow, i’m pretty much a 360 gamer, but if its at $150, (i’d buy it!) it’d be cool to play Nintendo’s first party games. Hopefully it’ll release with a Zelda 2.

Its needed. As an avid watcher of gaming trends and sales figures (click my name), Wii sales have leveled off to be at par with its competitors where two years ago it was doubling them.

So many great games too. Between my PS3 and Wii I have an abundance of every genre. Additionally, you just can’t beat Nintendo IPs.

Still waiting for Nintendo to do something for The Legend Zelda’s 25th anniversary, perhaps a limited edition Zelda themed console? I think that would be very cool for the release of Skyward Sword. I’d so buy that.
