iPad 3 won't have Retina Display, won't be released this year according to report

Tablets

Despite the fact that Apple just introduced the iPad 2, the cycle of rumors, other rumors debunking those rumors, and more rumors leading up to Apple’s iPad 3 is already in full swing. The latest episode of this endless soap opera aired on Tuesday as industry insider DigiTimes claimed knowledge of Apple’s next-generation iPad. Contrary to earlier rumors, DigiTimes cites Apple’s component suppliers in stating that the idea of an iPad 3 with a Retina Display launching this year is likely just “wishful thinking and misreporting.” The site maintains that Apple has not yet placed any orders for a new iPad to be released this year and if it does, it will likely be a minor upgrade, possibly adding 4G support to the tablet. 4G support in 2011 is just speculation at this point, however.

If you need a report to tell you that another iPad wont be released that quickly then you’re herpin.

Also, a “retina display” is a marketing term. To think that a 9.7″ screen will have a resolution somewhere in the 2000×1500 range and be any where near affordable is fkn ridiculous.

Are you kidding? Not adding a Retina Display or at LEAST a bigger pixel count is suicide for apple’s next iPad. Barnes and Noble doubled the iPad’s resolution and stuck it in the Nook Color. The NC is $250 and 7 in. is more than half of the iPad’s screen. Doing it to the iPad could keep the price the same.

      What rocks are you smoking?

      • http://twitter.com/NSDinfoTV NSDinfoTV

idk what he is smoking but i know that the higher the resolution the better the processor needs to be. while its fine for the iphone, the ipad will need a considerably faster processor to remain as fast as it is now.

      • Anonymous

The A4 was and still is great. The A5 is super. But wait until they get the A6, plus the Retina.

      • Anonymous

The current iPad is fine. Don’t get me wrong, but a big upgrade has to be the screen.

      • Anonymous

Those two statements are mutually exclusive. Either it’s fine or it’s lacking.

If the current iPad is fine, why does the next one require a more pixel dense (that’s what retina display means) display?

Sure it’s a ‘big’ upgrade. I’d love a 500HP engine in my honda… but I don’t need it for the tasks that I do. So unless Big means, ‘useless spec’ I don’t agree with you.

      • Anonymous

You just told me that technology doesn’t have to advance? HD apps beyond the current… I’m sure Steve Jobs will think of something next year to tell the world. The iPad didn’t need a back camera, yet it has it, and it looks terrible.

      • http://twitter.com/starksmon Stark

        Probably the finest granite.

      • Anonymous

So tell me. What are they going to add in Apple’s next iPad? 3D cameras ain’t happening, and the only thing that needs to be improved is the screen so far. And the cameras, which I might add, suck balls.

      • Anonymous

it’s not a camera. the ipad is designated to be a very portable tablet, with facetime capabilities.
There is no reason for a camera that’s primary use is for speaker phones to be any larger, because the captured video will be downgraded to drive over the wireless (or hopefully the 4G).

Again, unless you want to buy a $500 device to replace a $300 camera, the spec for more camera is overkill.

      • Anonymous

Downgraded to another iPad, where it will look just as terrible? And if it didn’t need a back camera, why add it?

      • Anonymous

And if Apple wants to hit a home run on both the consumer and business market, they’ll make the cameras better and the screen a higher resolution, which I didn’t say needed to be a Retina one.

      • Anonymous

@theothergeoff All the Apple fluffers say that you don’t need a better camera, but when the new iPad is announced, you will all be touting how great the new camera is and that will be one of the reasons the iPad 3 is so great. That’s exactly what happened with the first gen iPad. People all said, “Why would you need a camera on a Tablet” but when the iPad 2 was announced, it was a huge deal that it had a camera.

      • Anonymous

But the camera sucks on the new iPad. And people were saying it DID need a camera for skype calls. Apple needs to step up their game with the cameras.

    • http://twitter.com/mikedgDroid Mike DG

The Nook Color is NOT double the resolution of the iPad. In fact, it’s a lower resolution 1024×600.

      • Anonymous

Really? I could have sworn that they advertised “a higher than iPad resolution screen with VividView”.

  • Dan

“Won’t be released this year”… I hope not! Apple would devalue it’s star player if they replaced iPads every 8 months. My god, can’t people be happy with what they have for longer than a weekend?

  • http://twitter.com/starksmon Stark

    No shit, Sherlock.

  • Maxi, not i.

Yes, clearly 4G is the next minor upgrade to line up for, then screen resolution bump, then pink, green and blue ipads, then a new processor and more RAM . . . it goes on and one. That’s how Apple keeps extracting $$$ from the iSheep.

    • Anonymous

The rule of thumb for all apple products is to never purchase an odd numbered release.
Similar to Star Trek Movies.(until nemesis… the b*st*rds)

    • Anonymous

Thank you… The point is: Technology can’t stop, and it won’t. A better screen, more ram, a faster processor, somehow even thinner than it needs to be, A6 processor… the list DOES go on, otherwise people would stop buying things from apple, making them go bankrupt. I see no need for the iPad 2 unless you go on facetime daily, or shoot and edit your own movies from the damn thing. The iPad 1 never lagged for me…

  • http://twitter.com/simoncabron Simon Cabron

Anyone who thinks a “retina display” would be economically feasible on a screen this size/ratio is hurtin’ for a squirtin’. Fact of the matter is, Apple is already paying a premium on their current generation screen and screens are generally the most expensive component in these type of devices. Also, it’s pretty obvious Apple isn’t going to do another iPad this year. The typical life cycle for their phones, ipods, and now ipads are all around 12 months.

    • Anonymous

But technology isn’t going to stop, and things will get cheaper to make. And no need for a retina, just add a higher resolution screen would be fine. A6 processor here we come.

  • Apple/Googlewhocares!

Thank you BGR for another Apple Article. I actually now expect to go to your site and see them so nothings new here. But An iPad 3 should have better cameras, boost in ram, better screen and of course 4G. Apple will not jump on the 4G band wagon until networks are actually in place. I.E. Death of Wimax and LTE is fully operational on VZW and AT&T. Also the 4G atenna is a battery hog and comsumes to much power. Until a 4G atenna chipset comes out that meets apple standards dont expect 4G because we all know how Apple likes to boast about “10 hours of battery life”. Its going to be the same concept with the iPhone 5. Better chance for 4G on the phone if it is put out in the fall rather the summer. Look at the Thunderbolt amazingly fast phone, amazingly short battery life. Does’t matter though apple could take a dump in the box and it will still sell out because of its marketing team. But so far you cant complain about the quality of apple products.

      A6 processor…

    • Anonymous

My whole problem with Apple is that they don’t give their customers a choice. If I want to use Flash, I should be able to turn it on, but Apple doesn’t even give that option. The same goes for 4g. I should be able to toggle it on and off knowing what it will do to my battery if 4g is on. Apple treats its customers like helpless idiots. I get it for the tech ignorant people in the world, but I just don’t understand how gadget geeks don’t get pissed at Apple for this. I personally like having choices and have been avoiding Apple products since the iPhone 3g because of this (besides the iPod Nano Touch that I love!)

So, praytell, when is the new tAmPax mAxiPad 3 going to be released?? When will the World be blessed with that everso minor upgrade to 4G and will it have a ‘minor’ly upgraded 1.0MP Front Facing iCam???

    • Bluelou65

I think they want to time it to release the same time that Xoom celebrates it’s 200,000 tablet sale.

So next April more than likely.

      • Anonymous

Ha-Ha-Ha…… And, the best thing is that even next April it will still have inferior hardware compared to the XOOOOOOOOM. So, take your tAmPax mAxiPad with your sans iRetina display and your upgraded 1.0 Front Facing GrimeCam, still FLASHLESS, and SHOVE iT!

That’s it, I have had it with BGR, feed removed

‘would stop buying’ has any competitor delivered a ‘system’ that challenges the iPad2 at the price points? no. Apple is better to wait to the absolute last minute as to get the benefits of size reduction and/or scale efficienices before they introduce new product. Why? They are going into the corp office environment, and every turn of the crank is another ‘legacy support’ platform that has a 5 year support comet’s tail (people don’t realize that… most corp accounts love fewer turns of the technology crank, as more variations either obsolete more sooner, or require more variation support during the lifecycle of the unit).

    And to your vague points?

define ‘better screen’? what you really mean is ‘more realistic viewing’ heck the ipad2 improved viewing of computer games dramatically purely by better voxel (is that what they call them now?) rendering. No need for better resolution, just better rendering. That’s not the A5 per se’ but the GPU within it.

More RAM…. why? why do I need more RAM? what % of people are banging up against 64Gb?

thinner? naw…. who complains that the device is too fat? Has anyone ‘sold’ a device that is thinner? at this point, the only thing it can be… either lighter (or better balanced… all the weight at the center, so the ‘lever weight’ is lighter), or more battery life. Both of those trump thinness (weight is XX more important than thickness, and 10+ hour battery life is critical for a mobile person).

bottom line, you have not listed anything that _you_ need, that maps with what the average non-tech consumer needs. You infer the list goes on, but in fact, it stops at weight and battery.

But if you were asking what I think ‘the non current iPad owner wants’ and Apple ‘needs’ in a iPad3
    - Better ambient light sensing or easier brightness adjustment.
    - NFC abilities
    - ‘face’ recognition for authentication
    - support for upconverting from 720p to 1080p resolution (my acquiescence to ‘specs’, however for bandwidth, 720p will be the ITMS delivery until all US carriers are supporting LTE at a minimum)
    - LTE support with downward compatibility to both CDMA and GSM (universal broadband… minimizes platforms)
    - more GPU capabilities (probably requisite for the 1080p req above)
    - 12 hour battery life
    - over the air sync via wifi (LTE may be a bridge too far)

Otherwise most of the other stuff is iOS5 related.

Well, the PlayBook is being released in less than a week and all hands on reviews (people using them in the store, actual review sites are still under NDAs) have been really good. Unlike the Xoom, the PB is actually stable and has the specs to out perform the iPad 2. The ONLY complaint people can have with it is the screen size, and that’s not a real knock on the PB, it’s just a matter of personal preference.

      • Anonymous

the pedantic answer is, you’re arguing future possibilities rather than the here and now.

But you still haven’t hit the ‘general market.’ The Playbook doesn’t sell to the avg consumer… it sells to the person who currently has a BB (because you can’t do messaging without it). That’s less than a quarter of the ‘tech-elite’ market.

Most organizations I know want to get out from under the BES platform (or don’t want to start using it), and no 22 year old wants a Blackberry to run their tablet they get from their graduation money gifts.

I se the PB while technically ‘interesting’ HW wise, it’s a glut of interface layers at the user level. Is it an Android UI? a BB UI? a PB UI? a Flash UI? What is it? The best thing about the Apple iOS is that it’s relentless in driving developers to one user experience. The fastest crap user experience is still a crap user experience.

But then again, people must love the ‘tonnage’ of applications available for it, because that’s what RIM appears to be selling. In my parts, things of value have particular units, those that don’t are measured by generic weight: we sell ‘bushels’ of corn, and get rid of ‘tons’ of sh*t. That’s what I thought of when I heard tonnage. Have you heard RIM push out any major developers moving their development to the PB? What are the killer 3rd party apps? What is compelling me to buy? As a non-technical consumer?

      • Anonymous

See, you are as illinformed as everyone else! You most definitely can message from your PB. For someone to tout the iPad like you do, a device that relies on apps about 90%, and then to dismiss the fact that the PlayBook will definitely have email and other messaging apps is ludacris! There are already messaging and calendar apps submitted into App World for the PlayBook that will be available at launch. Also, RIM is releasing their own apps soon after release. Don’t confuse ignorance with fact.

As for your comment “Have you heard RIM push out any major developers……”, well actually yes. They have bought TinnyHippos and TAT recently and they have also made deals with EA and other major developers. And don’t forget the fact that the PB will be able to run Android apps as well.

“I se the PB while technically ‘interesting’ HW wise, it’s a glut of interface layers at the user level. Is it an Android UI? a BB UI? a PB UI? a Flash UI? What is it?”

Easy question. It’s a PB UI that is based on the BB6 UI.

“Most organizations I know want to get out from under the BES platform (or don’t want to start using it), and no 22 year old wants a Blackberry to run their tablet they get from their graduation money gifts.”

Most people I know (in the 25-35 year old range) own BlackBerrys. I live in a wealthy area outside of NYC and 75% of the phones I see are BlackBerrys. Also, I coach 8th grade basketball for a local middle school and almost every middle schoolers that has a smartphone has a BlackBerry. Either BBs are more popular than you think, or it’s just because I live in a very wealthy wall street area.

prob on ipad 8 if not ipad 6, ipad 5 had some potential

OMG…yes….we need RETINA display on the iPad! The iPad is truly great and the 2 is a nice improvement.
Retina would be amazing, but the iPad 2 was just recently announced, let’s talk about the iPad 2, actually regularly use the iPad 2, what’s cool and amazing, what’s we don’t like, just get the full impression of what the device does…
P.S. Hey, iPad guys, for playing and enjoying with the iPad, I found this iPad spot catches my eyes lots, cool list of Apps&games, tips&tutorial on syncing, watching video, movies and other more: http://www.ifunia.com/ipad-column/index.html

if the next ipad doesn’t have the retina display i’m not buying! i didn’t buy the ipad 2 because of the screen!

Oh look, another Apple rumor from Zach. Seriously man, stfu, this sh!t is tired. If anyone could single handedly turn Apple fanboys away from their products it would be you – running around screaming “apple, apple, apple!!!” every time the wolf sneezes and you think it means something.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_NRLCW5SEP6JK5Y5LCHQRKH5IRY Randy Marsh

I don’t think Apple will release iPad 3 as early. Because iPad 2 release will not compete 1 year. And according to Apple strategy which is shown in past they will not release next generation device as fast in market. But I am waiting for iPad 3 because I want to experience the whole new iOS 5 in iPad 3.
