BlackBerry Traffic updated with predicted traffic conditions, more

mobile

Research In Motion announced on Monday that it has updated its BlackBerry Traffic navigation software to version 2.0.0.1749. The latest iteration includes the following changes:

  • Select between two routes to a destination, and can use a new traffic view that displays predicted traffic conditions for each route.
  • Pre-set destinations, such as work or home, or get an ETA to destinations from within their BlackBerry® Contacts, enter an address manually, or find new places using the search feature
  • Quickly share ETAs with contacts via SMS, email, or PIN message

RIM also said that, by anonymously collecting user data, the software will now optimize your estimated time of arrival, and will suggest the best time to leave based on current traffic conditions. BlackBerry Traffic requires a GPS-equipped device running BlackBerry OS 4.6 or newer. The app will be rolling into the App World over the next 24 hours. Listen up, Nancy..your little Blackberry is used by little girls who like texting and BBM idiots. Phones like the Curve and Pearl are cherished for their pink colors. Which do you have?

Why can’t we get this in UK?

Now that’s pretty useful. I like the comparative estimate against other departure times.

I like the app, I think they’re using it as a startup app, until they create some kind of full blown gps for their phones.

If they could implement some tight integration with BB Maps, or even better, Google Maps, this app would take off I think. As it stands now, I don’t see this getting used too often. Hopefully it’s a step to something bigger and better.

This app is the result of the Dash Navigation purchase a year or two ago — they had some good backend systems, but most of their engineers jumped ship for google or the big GPS names. I still use my Dash — even without traffic their 2 year old rounting algorithms are still some of the best, though it looks like an old tube TV mounted to the windshield

this is one killer app and I use quite often, it is pretty accurate. I see future upgrades coming in the form text-to-voice prompts, map integration etc
