Apple Final Cut Pro X revealed, sports 64-bit support

Breaking

Apple just lifted the curtain on Final Cut Pro X during the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas. The latest version of the hugely popular video editing software adds support for 64-bit processors and can now take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM. There are a number of enhancements including new smart collections for grouping similar types of media together – like multiple photos of one person, in the same vain as iPhoto – clip connection for keeping audio and video in sync, and a magnetic timeline feature that prevents trim collision. Apple also says there’s a new user interface design, and users will be able to start editing video before the ingest stage is completed. Final Cut Pro X is also capable of background rendering and can take advantage of 8-core editing rigs in addition to handling 4K video clips. Apple says Final Cut Pro X will be available in June for $299.

Hold up. $299. Is this the new Final Cut Studio? Just Final Cut Pro? Just FCP Express?? Or the real deal upgrade to the currently $900 software suite??

    • Anonymous

That’s what I want to know. I’m hoping the other programs in the suite got the same overhaul that FCP did. It can’t be $299 for the entire suite, that would be insane… and awesome.

What they will probably do is release FCPX first and then enable you to buy all the other programs separately, which may not be terrible depending on the pricing and changes made to them.

It’s Final Cut Pro, like the article says. Final Cut Express lives no more. The other bits like Colour and so forth we don’t know about yet but probably add-ons for extra.

Remember, it’s coming to the mac App store and you can’t do software “suites” in the Mac App store.

You mean you spent the time to learn this program and don’t want anyone else to be able to without taking 10 hrs of classroom instruction? I’m all for a new interface. This program has been impossible to use except for video experts and its time to give real video tools to the masses.

      • Path 88

Impossible to use? What, are you 13 years old?

You’d have to be one lazy and dumb something-something to not “get-it” after putting in a few days of effort. That’s two days of actually using the thing, referencing, accessing tutorials. Whoa! That’s waaaay too much effort, huh?

What, you want a magic button to do all your work? C’mon now.

        It’s not complicated at all.

No competition for android super monster studio suite from google coming out in a week. No competition at all. with this suite you’ll be able to make movies like avatar on an android phone.

No mention of what formats it handles natively, if Apple improved its H.264 encoding from Quicktime 7, if it improved the horrendously difficult to use Compressor, and what it’s doing with Motion and Soundtrack. I’ve switched over to Adobe CS5 and haven’t looked back.

    • Anonymous

Adobe CS5 is literally TEN TIMES the price of FCP, and Final Cut Pro is the industry standard.

And Premiere has had all of these features for a year, many since 2008.

Exactly! I think Final Cut looks more like Premiere than ever!

    • Anonymous

What are you talking about? At least half of the features announced today don’t exist in any other software product. Most of them weren’t even technically possible to do before this year.

      • Yup

        hows steve’s balls tasting

“….support for 64-bit processors and can now take advantage of more than 4GB of RAM.” Hmmmm…. no one saying “Welcome to 2009″? That’s odd… Maybe that only applies if you’re someone other than Apple.

    • Yup

      lol pwned

from the photo it does look like the ui is dumbed down to imovie level which was the first reason why i was desperate to not to use imovie.
btw there is no such a thing as final cut pro express fcpx – it s final cut express!

    64-bit support? Color me impressed!

    • Yup

      wow…welcome to 2008

LoL… unfortunately the only real apps for a MAC are the ones apple make themselves… and Photoshop :) )

I’d recommend vegas PRO but there are at least two dozen worthy programs with the same features, including free ones – for the PC I mean.

What do Media Access Controllers have to do with programs and platforms?

  • Anonymous

    Just another market Apple owns.

    Mind share, check!

Apple has lowered the cost of their professional editing suite so much makes me think they are a consumer driven company. :P

  • Asdf

  • Path 88

Yeah, heck with this stuff and changing the color of the interface!
