Windows Phone to overtake BlackBerry in 2013, iOS in 2015 according to Gartner

In addition to its position that Android will continue to dominate the global smartphone market moving forward, Gartner on Thursday revealed its projections for Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. According to the firm, Nokia’s strong global position will drive Windows Phone adoption at an impressive pace, capturing 5.6% of smartphone unit sales in 2011. Gartner goes on to state that sales of devices featuring Microsoft’s mobile OS will surpass RIM’s BlackBerry OS in 2013, and will then move past iOS in 2015 to account for 19.5% of smartphones sold globally, compared to iOS’ 17.2%. Gartner’s determination further supports the notion that Nokia will drive global Windows Phone sales rapidly, as proposed by several other firms including Ovum and IDC.

WM7 already peaked….and sliding into oblivion. By the time Nokia comes out with a WM7 in 2012 the window has passed and more thank likely Nokias reputation as a flipflopper would have nulled or bought the WM7 deal in favor using a different OS.

I agree. I mean here in Asia – where 65% of the world’s people live – smartphones have already reached a staggering 0.002% market penetration. It’s all over folks……

Gartner’s audience are Fortune 1000 IT people. I attended a few Gartner meetings in my past. I remember one in particular.Gartner said that OS/2 would be the dominant platform on the desktop and that Windows was going to be an “also ran”. How’d that work out, Gartner?

Title should read: Gartner thinks Nokia will survive past 2012?

    Give me a break!

Wow, Windows has captured 5.6% already? I’d like to see how many of those are Microsoft employees who have been forced to ditch their other phones.

Most of the Microsofties I know had iPhones or similar and – suddenly – had Windows Phones. I’d say the majority were not happy with the change.

Actually, the Goofan (aka Apple Hater) Research Division, which in my opinion, is a LOT more accurate, historically, and respectable than Gartner, estimates Google will have 99.45545% share of the market by next summer.

Garner is full of crap… Blackberry is here to stay!

    LOL no.

I can see Windows Phone being number 2 by 2015 hell who thought the 360 would be in second place in 2011? Nobody, Windows Phone is a great OS I have a G2 now it’s great but I’ve outgrown android I want something new so WP it is.

The problem with Gartner is that they’re so over confident they now think they make the trend, not report the trend.

If Nokia sells more smartphones it will be because they’re sell less regular phones. Their leadership position has taken a massive hit but they’re still number one phone wise.

Anyone that reports smartphone growth without reporting the impact on the regular phone market is misrepresenting the facts.

The commodore 64 overtook RIM jobs OS back in 1982.

Both platforms have been spiraling lower lately, with Windows making a slight bump up with WinMo 7. So put two last place companies together and they make a overlord ? And where is their tablet ? I think HP has a better chance then WinMo, Nokia won big globally because of lower price point, I don’t see that continuing if they modernize the hardware and pay license fees to Redmond.

I’ve been using a Windows tablet since 2003. My question is where is Apple’s tablet? I mean you can’t even write on it. What’s the point of that?

  • Windows Mobile is stupid

RIM and Apple make both software and hardware into a single device, as to android and Windows Phone 7 who only Google and microsoft create a basic OS and sell it (or in Googles case hand it out for free) to major smartphone makers and as much as I hate android devices (yes I currently own an android but I choose my BlackBerry over all devices) I don’t think WM is going anywhere far, even with the complete redesigned OS it is still the old Windows Mobile OS that was on the HTC Touch and older generation devices (2000-2005 windows 3.2 OS)

I would easily choose android over a nokia or Windows Mobile and would choose an iPhone over an android but as long as there is a blackberry (new or old) I will rock it…Nothing in my opinion beats the reliability of a BlackBerry

no phone can email like a blackberry and no phone has BBM and a perfectly fit keyboard

also battery life and memory management is unbeatable with RIM.

Trust me I’m not even close to a RIM fanboy (I’m more like an Apple fanboy) but I can NOT live without my BlackBerry…Or iPod touch…Or MacBook Pro

pont is it’s not happening RIM and Apple, and (though I hate to admit it) Android are going to be o top for years to come hands-down for sure.

      Dude..WTF …are u trying to insult other post readers here…if so..bad very bad…
WP7 is NOT same as WinMo, just the kernel is similar(read copy paste) but with some significant changes…..
      other than this u r ok…peace

And those projections are all based on the assumptions that “all things remain equal”. How often does THAT happen in tech?

as terrible as gartner has been in the past…this is somewhat conceivable…

    windows eats up symbian marketshare…
droid/iphone keep increasing at ridiculous rates…
blackberry stays stagnant/reduces marketshare but still adds users…

i just dont really see windows doing better than apple…

  • http://twitter.com/Poita316 Peter Fox

Just read that HTC has a higher net worth then Nokia. Guess that predicition isn’t gonna happen seeing people buy HTC (mostly Android operated) instead of WM operated devices.
But hey, maybe pigs will fly…

  • http://twitter.com/sajidmib Sajid

iOS is here to stay, while rest will be making comparisons and try to copy them in every aspect .. remember it is iOS that came out with touch then android then RIM and atlast windows so this order is going to stay

    *Cough* bullshit

Wow, how pathetic is that? Blackberry has slipped below Windows phone, at this rate BB could be gone by 2012……. and it’s their own fault.

  • savagenation

Who? Nobody ever heard of this guy outside the Geekway. If you had a Nickel for every know it all who predicted Apple’s demise, company, product or otherwise, you’d be very rich. MSFT is practically flat-lined for the past decade. AAPL is up, what a measly 3,000%+ in the same period.
Microsoft makes Windows. Windows is a Dinosaur and Dinosaurs become extinct and fuel our cars. Do the math.

I can make a more viable projection: By 2013 Nokia will fire its CEO but will not be able to catch up with other manufacturers (HTC, Samsung, LG, Motorola) that will have filled the gap that Nokia left. Will turn to an all OS production of phones (Win7/8, Android, Meego, Symbian) but nobody will care.
By 2014 there will be Android, iOS, Blackberry and either Meego or webOS (or none of them). WinPhone will be exactly where it is today but with no hope for the future.

  • iPhone 4ever

Windows phone will never be better than IOS, I’m sure
