Boost Mobile’s Samsung Galaxy Prevail hands-on!

mobile

We’re here live at the Boost Mobile’s media event in New York City where the prepaid carrier just announced the Samsung Galaxy Prevail — its first CDMA Android powered smartphone. The Galaxy Prevail runs Android 2.2 (Froyo) and sports a 3.2-inch touchscreen display, 2 megapixel rear-facing camera, Bluetooth, and free subscription to Telenav for voice-guided turn-by-turn directions. During our initial hands-on, it was immediately clear that the Galaxy Prevail does not have the same hardware prowess as other Samsung devices with the Galaxy namesake. There’s no 4-inch Super AMOLED display, it’s incapable of recording 720p video, and it felt a bit sluggish navigating through menus and panning on web pages. That’s not necessarily a deal breaker, though, as the Galaxy Prevail is available for a very reasonable $179.99 contract-free. When used with Boost Mobile’s $50 all-you-can-eat smartphone plan — which includes unlimited talk, text, and web browsing — the deal gets even sweeter. It’s certainly a welcome addition to Boost’s portfolio, especially for those looking to save a few bucks without sacrificing all that a smartphone can offer, but certainly isn’t going to woo many (read: any) users away from their current Android handset.

this is actually a damn good deal on a decent android phone. boost has sprint’s wide network and good prices. I know with the iPad I barely use my smartphone, but still want to have one and this may be a good option for me instead of a Blackberry

Actually. It will “woo many users away from their current Android handset.” Because many users are still on old generation devices which this still leaps above. Devices such as the i1 which, to date, has been Boost’s only other android offering. This phone will be more popular than you give it credit for if not just because it will be the envy of every Boost customer.

That and phones from T-mo like the MyTouch series (esp the slide my wife has) that JUST got 2.2 YESTERDAY.. and still has the stupid HTC sense crap and TMo junk on it.

For 179 contract free, I may get one just to use as a backup device. Very nice.

Boost does not offer contracts so the phone is 180 and the plan [assuming you have not gotten your shrinkage yet] is 50 and you can cancel anytime you want

ps if you do have boost every 6 months you pay your bills on time with shrinkage on your plan you get a $5 off your bill until you hit $35 they began this a few months ago and April is the first month that you get the reduction and it can be transferred phone to phone

Since I am a retailer with Boost mobile I am extremely excited about this phone. Customers will be lined up around the block for this android powered phone. I have now found the phone that is going to lure me away from the 100 dollar bill I pay monthly with tmobile. Understand that for 179.99 this is one fantastic deal….

I GOT A HUGE QUESTION WHICH ONE IS BETTER THE BLACK BERRY CURVE OR THE SAMSUNG PREVAIL? IM MOSTLY TEXTING AND BATTERY LIFE IS IMPORTANT FACTOR

      • A Nony Mouse

After using Android, going back to a Blackberry is like selling your house to move into a cave.

When I save pics from my email to this phone they are not saved to the gallery. How can I save them straight to the gallery?

  • Longhorn_grl

I got this phone yesterday. It sucks. It freezes and overheats every five minutes. I’m taking it back!!!!!!!

i have had mine since last week. it works great, i have not had any lockups. i did swap the 2gig sandisk for a 16gig class6 chip before i ever used the phone however (faster memory). it’s smaller than the iphone so it is easier in an out of my pocket. battery life is comparable to my iphone.

for 3 iphones on att i was paying about $300/month average. i’ll be saving $150 per month on the three phones i’m quite happy. i like it as well as my iphone. and i dont have to deal with att’s creative billing policies lol. i understand verizon likes to hit you with fees here and there also. i sent 1300 txt messages to canada and att charged me $0.25 each.  my boostmobile has unlimited calling/text to canada/mexico for an extra $5 month so i pay $55

Bought my Galaxy Prevail at the end of May, entering the smartphone matket for the first time. Except for the typing sometimes being off due to Prevail having a smaller screen compared to other Galaxy series smart phones, and me having big fingers, and Youtube videos sometimes freezing up, I can’t complain about about the Prevail. Glad I got it. Felt so out of touch until I bought it. It’s also fairly impact resistant with a rubber grip on it. Dropped it when a bee landed on my hand and did not even get a scratch on the screen even though it landed upside down
