LTE toggle switch for HTC ThunderBolt hits Android Market

Software

In our review of Verizon’s first LTE-capable smartphone, the HTC ThunderBolt, we told you about a minor gripe we had with the device: battery life. It’s true, powering a 4.3-inch screen and a handful of wireless radios can take its toll on battery life, so we were shocked to find that the ThunderBolt did not have a carrier-supported method for turning off the device’s 4G radio. The handset is sold in markets where Verizon’s next-generation wireless network is currently unavailable, and power-users often like to toggle the feature on and off as needed. While this functionality may not be included out of the box, the open nature of Android has brought a simple application to the Market to help you out. Dubbed LTE OnOFF, the 11KB application allows you to toggle LTE in three simple clicks. Open the app, click “OK” on the instructions page, and select “CDMA auto” for LTE-less operation. The applications creators describe the code as follows:

Like all the paid LTE “Switch” and “Toggles”, just faster, smaller and free. Simple, to the point. Distribute freely.

LTE OnOFF is sitting in the Android Market, just waiting to be downloaded. If you’re a ThunderBolt owner looking for an easier way to toggle your 4Gs, enjoy.

This will come in handy when I am not in a 4G area.

    TeamAndIRC for the win!

Fail @ HTC for selling a phone with such crappy battery life using 4G that people need to turn it off to make it through the day.

Most people aren’t in LTE areas (like myself in central New Jersey) I still bought the phone and am now using this app. Its great and I have seen huge improvements on battery. I can get over a day with LTE turned off. The phone is like all HTC phones and battery could be better but until you own it stop bashing it. Its not HTC’s fault LTE is only working in limited markets. Its the constant searching for LTE that drains the battery so much so how is it HTC’s fault?

That stinks. I guess central Jersey is hit or miss until you reach the New York City umbrella of coverage (Lawrenceville has a nice strong LTE signal). I’ve been using this app for about a week now (found it courtesy of the phandroid forums) and I’ve been turning the LTE radio off when I don’t need it to save battery power.

The app “phoneinfo” already did the same exact thing.

What we need is a real button widget like you have for wifi on/off.

  • Anonymous

Surprised nobody has released “auto on off” based on cell tower/GPS coords/time of day. Those have been around for a long time for BB (wifi on/off, cell on/off).

Is this app’ available for iPhone and iPad????

Ooooooooops, my bad, I forgot that they don’t support 4G LTE. (Unless you tether 4G thereto)

    What a DiSaPPointment!!

    • Joel

Except when the iPhone 4 was released LTE wasn’t an option, nice try troll.

And to answer your question if the iPhone did have LTE it would have a toggle switch in the general settings. Cause iPhone doesn’t put out half-baked software.

I bet when the iPhone does have LTE the battery will last more than 4 hours.

U suck so much android dick when u talk u sound like R2D2 smh

The fact that the switches existence warrants a news story really says something about Android, doesn’t it?

    • Anonymous

Yes it certainly does; it says, “Open” and not subject to crApple’s approval!! Go play with your 0.30 Pixel iCam on Facegrime.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Yeah maybe Google needs to approve something instead of shoddy devices being release and an OS that can’t manage power. Unless a person is tethered to a computer or outlet all day, or buy the dumb arse extended battery, they’ll never be able to fully use the phone without worrying about whether they can make it through the work day.

That Widgets are useful to change settings with one click instead of diving into settings every time?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Yeah but a person shouldn’t have to toggle things on an off throughout the day just to make it through the day.

      • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AR6HpRLyzMY Walter Sobchak

So you would rather wait a year until Stevie says lte is ready for phones than being given it eith an option to toggle it?
I don’t know why I asked that, of course you would. You people hate choice.

  • http://twitter.com/homescrub homescrub

Wow. Amazed at how fast Verizon and Google were quick to get on that app. Good work!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_JNKVTT7PJMXPYP2GVCIERBQQCU Andrew

Yeah I used it and for some reason the phone was running hot and draining battery faster. I uninstalled the app and the phone is back to normal. Thanks HTC for providing a crappy battery. Thanks google for providing an OS that has poor power management. Good job guys.

so do you get off on stating the same time over and over in the same thread? we get it. you don’t like android. you don’t get extra points for repeating yourself.

This will be a highly downloaded app. It is very useful because LTE uses more data.

How about toggling everything *except* LTE off, and then using something like sipdroid with a data-only plan?
